Very good point to bring up about the cash-only profiles. There certainly are a number of ways to handle your debts, with walking away and settling only being a couple of them. While I can't personally advocate this way of dealing with it, the publication chose to feature them to possibly round out the story with every possible scenerio. Thanks for sharing your opinions on the topic! We like to hear what our readers are thinking :)
I love this, another "Barney Frank conspired with poor people to bring down the U.S. economy" theory. This sounds like one of the many whacked out theories coming out of the tea party movement's great think tank. So I guess a bunch of Ivy league educated wall street gurus were bamboozled and had their hands forced by Barney Frank and his evil poor uneducated minorities. Wow didn't realize the poor and uneducated were so cunning. Give me a break. When are people going to stop defending greedy wall street bankers. While you're railing against Barney Frank, wall street continues to hand out huge bonuses. If there was any "government forcing" it was done by the right wing Bush administration that cow-towed for 8 years to the fat cats on wall street. You're scapegoat is in Crawford, TX not Massachusetts.
Having only read this post, not the book, I agree with what the book seems to be saying. However I want to make one distinction; The type of capitalism these bankers were practicing gives true, good capitalism a bad name.
Capitalism overall seems to be under attack right now, but in reality true honest capitalism is one of the only things that makes America what it is.
There is nothing wrong with striving to grow your company and compete with business rivals as long as it's done honestly and within limits. It sounds like what these bankers did was not honest and within limits, and those bankers should somehow be punished.
I just feel that we should all be more willing to look at the individual cases, instead of condeming capitalism altogether.
I read her article, and to me that's pretty much the definition of frugality, but not one that I want to be a part of. Living in a house that's not mine, expecting to be evicted at any moment doesn't sound like fun. Digging through trash for food, even if it's from upscale grocery stores or restaurants sounds pretty frugal, but not something I want to do!
Red wine definitely lowers blood sugar, beer is a crap shoot.Wheat beers I don't trust.Usually strong beers 6% and higher work but not all.My Standby is Stella Artois.I have a beer about 3 times a week,Friday is my tasters day, last Friday I had a strong malt beer crossed my fingers that it wasn't a mistake,it wasn't.
You have to watch like a hawk what you buy, most food is filled with Corn syrup,Corn syrup solids, various starches and some form of disolvable sand, none of wich adds anything to taste, just money to food processors' wallets.I make my own ketchup,I can't tell the difference between mine and the sugar packed stuff from
the market. If I sleep more than 3 hours at a clip I will spike,so I rely on naps and short sleep periods.Vitamin B complex is a sleep aid.I started to wake at 6:30 Am., eat a snack with metformin then back to bed.My morning reads are usual 5.8 - 7.6,before they were in the 8.5 - 9.8 range.A radical panic measure that I have taken to lower blood sugars was to take a teaspoon of cinnamon and a teaspoon fenugrek washed down with 2 tablespoons of apple cidar vinegar mixed with a tablespoon of lemon juice.
It works but not by much, the vinegar is achallenge.
Thanks for the information on this site.
I want to point something else about auto-replies. I work for an ISP and we've seen cases where someone's domain is forged in spam campaigns. Mail servers who don't recognize the address the mail is going to (after already accepting it at the server level) often send a bounce. Problem is, the bounce is going to the legitimate owner of the domain, NOT the spammer, and it's bad practice, called an unsolicited bounce.
Two things can happen when you auto-reply to spam:
1. You send an unsolicited message to the owner of the forged address. So YOU have now spammed THEM!
2. Or, you let spammers know your address is legitimate, hence keeping you on future mailing lists.
Auto-responders are SPAM. There will come a time in the near future where you will be blacklisted for the offense.
For the first time ever in our 32 year marriage, we do not have any medical insurance, due to job lay offs. My husband, 54 years old, has been in the hospital 3 times since August of this year. Our medical bills are mounting, we owe about $30,000 to date. I have made arrangements for monthly payments,we have 5 different medical bills with the largest being the hospital at $23,000. They have agreed to a $25 monthly payment. We are both out of work and get about $1,000 month unemployment, total. The credit and collections dept. has sent me a "Financial Information" sheet to fill out and return to them. Some of the information they need is: Employer info, next of kin, list of our bills and amts., own or rent, checking account info, savings acct. info., banks, own real estate, own vehicle, make, model, year and tag # of vehicles. Martial status, all info on spouse as well. Do I have to furnish this info? Is it to my benefit, their benefit? Can they put a lein against our home? (we still owe on home). We live in Alabama, any insight you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Mobile concessions sales may APPEAR to be very profitable to those who have never tried the business, but I ASSURE you they are wrong. The margins shown in the misleading chart do NOT take into account all operating costs. Those who make great profits are the fixed location contractors at large stadiums, race tracks, and other places that draw massive crowds week after week. The bid solicitations for those venues are written so ONLY those who have tens of millions to spend on the required equipment have any chance of winning a contract. Those who have a little trailer that they pull around the country with a pickup truck are always sweating about the weather, the local health department inspectors, the local business license issuers, equipment failures, supplies of every sort, water hook ups, electricity hook ups, the event promoter renting their (prepaid and non-refundable) space to someone else because they were fifteen minutes late arriving, etc., etc. When someone has a little business that takes in money only on weekends, plus travels from place to place most of the week while the operator stays on the phone trying to find a place to work and help for the next weekend, it's not easy to make a decent living. One large auto swap meet operator in Georgia only allows six concession operators to work his property, plus the rent for one 10' x 10' space for one week is $10,000 (cash only - six months in advance) + 30% of the GROSS income. Last fall, the weather was bad and very few people showed up, but there was no refund for the vendors. As "they" say "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence". It's funny how everyone believes every business but the one they're operating is a gold mine.
As it did not mention the fact that the Government basically forced the Bankers to perform these machinations.
Barney Frank should be on the FBI's 10 most wanted list for the great fraud he single handedly perpetrated on the American people.
But he won't be, and he will be re-elected and we will see more demonizing those Evil bankers and then when they are done blaming bankers, they will find a new group to demonize. Maybe a group that you belong to.
How best article.. Thanks a lot for this information. I get something new at here. If i can get about rate and interest of house loan in 2010 is make better. But thanks for this info.
Interesting about rates - if rates increase, less people will be able to afford houses, and combined w/ the end of the home mortgage tax credit, prices will likely come down.
Thanks for the financial tips on buying a home Tisha. I very recently posted on the other aspects of the purchase, mainly on the walk-through and taking occupancy. Includes a checklist chart.
No bank employee should ever be carrying around customer's personal information. I've been working in the banking industry for years, and the only time I write down personal information is when I'm talking to someone on the phone: I might write down their social or account number, but I promptly shred them as soon as I'm finished. All other files and paperwork are kept under lock and key at all times unless they are actually in use, being looked up by an employee. You were right to confront them, unfortunately some people just don't realize or don't care what a security risk people's information can be. In my opinion, the customer's information is more valuable than the cash in the vault: the cash is insured, but what about your credit and reputation? I'm sorry you had to deal with such terrible service!
I think it speaks volumes that two of the five readers profiled in the CNN article actually stiffed their creditors.
John Wilder stopped paying on 12K...
Dawn Tulman "settled" 15-20K worth of debt...
But hey, it's easier to go "cash only" when you decide not to pay for what you've purchased. (Formerly referred to as "stealing".)
Shame on them for bragging about their "cash" lifestyles and double shame on CNN for profiling them in the article - as if they're doing something that the rest of us should emulate!
If I had walked out on or "settled" a debt, I would be ashamed. I would not go bragging in a national publication.
Hello all, I have bought a new Samsung DVD, as yes I can't watch any DVD's, I used a unlock code that I got from a site and all was working well for a few weeks, then come Jan 1st, I went to watch a DVD and a message came up on the screen that said my DVD does not have a region code, I have tried numerous DVD's from all region's and none of them work.
I need to reset the region or do something, has anyone else ever had this trouble or seen or heard of it before.
If anyone has any suggestions or knows a code can you please email me on

Who cares about the law? Linda did something insecure with your personal data that made you feel uncomfortable, and when you told her so she refused to destroy that piece of paper. That's the bottom line, legal or not.
It's interesting to note that little mention is made of the fact that employer-sponsored health insurance is a direct result of unions - you know, those nasty organizations that boycotted work places because the bosses were making too much money and paying the rank and file too little? After a certain number of employees, companies are required by the federal government to provide health coverage. How is a government sponsered option any different?
It's merely a matter of how insurance coverage is provided. Does it come out of my employer's pocket, OR does my employer hand over the money she was paying to insurance companies to me, and I'll either purchase my own - based on MY choices - or pay the premiums in taxes? Either way, it still comes out of all of our pockets. NOTHING is free.
I cannot imagine anyone not clearing and filing stuff from their wallet/purse daily! When you walk in my house, there is a table by the door for wallets and cell phones. Purses, jackets, hats and scarves are hung on pretty decorative hooks above the table. There is also a 'receipt' box so we can check on the computer when debit or charge receipts clear the bank and then they are immediately filed under the right tax folder in the pretty decorative file cabinet under the table. There is also a change cup on the table that automatically counts change as you drop it in. The change is deposited into the saving account on payday along with paychecks or reimbursement checks that are not automatically deposited. We only have one credit card and one debit card. Coupons are also stored in a file under the table, and no one leaves the house to shop unless the coupon file is checked FIRST. Gift cards are filed under 'coupons' so any one shopping has first dibs on them...but I usually leave the Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's cards for him and he leaves the Williams-Sonoma and Crate and Barrel cards for me because of our varied interests:)
We live in Hot Springs, AR, where there is a small cable company. There is no competition. They don't care what you watch or don't watch. If you want anything other than network TV, you pay what they tell you to pay.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but everyone doesn't have it that easy.
I am new to SwagBucks and Alice.com is definitely the most reasonable choice for converting SB's to real dollars. I actually only pay $5-$7 per jumbo pack of Huggies diapers and pull-ups thanks to CVS, but since SB's are free money was thinking of making Alice.com my diaper source. Except, I couldn't find a way to learn about their diaper prices w/out signing up, and I need to wait to sign up until I decide about the SB's. You answered my question perfectly! And bingo on the tp - that is one thing that I pay the closest to retail after coupons so I will check it out. Love this site!
