Can you put this on your lawn in the wintertime? I've noticed that the moles have taken over my yard since the lawn has gone dormant. I live in the south. If not, does anyone have any other recommendations until sprin?
Mikey Rox, I like your article except for your last piece of advice: turn term life insurance into whole life insurance. Term life insurance is the best insurance you can get when you have dependents to take care of. Once the 20-year term expires, you are done. Why would anyone ever get whole life insurance? Whole life insurance is only good for insurance companies. Do you sell insurance???!
In addition to everything everyone else has already mentioned above (couponing, cooking, brewing coffee, rebate app, etc) I also try to utilize natural resources as much as I can that's given to us for free. For example, instead of paying for laundry dryer, I line dry my clothes. I try to walk around a lot instead driving. I charge my phone from a solar panel charger. I pick lemons in my neighborhood and make vitamin-c-full of lemon syrup tea. I freeze left over food or ingredients to avoid waste and always try to take the food out ahead of time so I can minimize gas or electricity to reheat. I also unplug all the appliances when not in use so I don't pay for phantom electricity. I try to use less of things and also reuse things if I can (jars, old clothes, plastic bags, etc). As I tried to save money these ways, I learned that it doesn't only save me money but also the environment and health. So I win, win and win.
Cooking and making coffee at home are definitely my favorite money saving activities. These days I only enjoy restaurants for the social aspect of sharing a meal.
White vinegar in the final rinse of your wash removes all the detergent and acts as a fabric softener and eliminates static cling. No dryer sheets, or any other chemicals are needed.
My favorite way to save money is to freeze vegetable material that usually goes in the compost bin in summer and when I have about a gallon of frozen "vegetable garbage" to use the slow cooker to make vegetable broth. I get approximately 3 or 4 quarts of organic vegetable broth, without any added salt or other ingredients. In my grocery store this morning, a quart of organic vegetable broth was $3.20, on sale.
The library! I'm a book nerd and read close to 4 books a month. This saves anywhere from $40-60.
Also, bought a French Press off Amazon to make my own coffee at work. After adding up what I spent in a year on coffee (almost $1000!), I realized I need to make a serious change in finances.
that is what I have started doing lately...Put things in freezer for later, like cakes or cookies when I have that "Urge" to eat sweets. Roast can be put in bags in freezer and voila! you can have roast with just thawing. And so many things that make sense, when you think about how to economize. Sometimes just for fun and a challenge, and going back to the Old College Days!! Have fun baking!!!!
I like shopping clearance and buying second hand & new in package items at garage sales and rummage sales (I save thousands!). This is how I Christmas shop and outfit my kids in expensive brand clothes. I like it because it feels like a treasure hunt.
Great post! I do these things and it is not as hard as it seems. Treating savings like one of your bills is so important! My 2007 Sienna died unexpectedly with only 92,000 miles on it. However, since we have been steadily putting money into our "car fund" for years, I am planning to pay with cash to buy a slightly used car. I am a SAHM, but my "job" is to stretch my husband's salary as far as I can! It CAN be done!

Thanks for the great article, Kyle James! I use ibotta but I didn't know about the other helpful money-saving tricks.

I enjoy shopping at thrift stores for clothes, books, and household goods. I love buying things for a fraction of what they originally cost.
This was really helpful.Especially when it comes to studies. I would like to see more posts like theses. :D
Cooking with random left over bits of food to make something delicious!
Ooh, there are lots of these! Gardening. Using the library. Making my own clothes and gifts. Those would be at the top of the list.
My husband and I pack up the leftovers after dinner for the next day's lunch. We've got a good system and have a good time with it. :)

This is a great resource. I would love to see it expanded! What about used vehicles, other major consumer items, etc.

I love using my digital coupons when I go grocery shopping! It's fun to see the end of the year savings and be like WOW I saved all that money!
I like to use blogs that do store match ups with sales and coupons. I love the hunt for free items to add to my shopping list.
I like using coupons, both online and in store.
