  • Ask the Readers: Do You Still Have a Landline?   15 years 12 weeks ago

I have a land line for internet service and when I have to call a government agency and could be on hold for a long time. (One call lasted 2 hrs). My land line with internet is ~$50/month. I use tracfone when I have to call long distance ~$7/month ($20 card for 90 days).

I use an empty plastic candy container from costco. I agree it is fun to watch those coins pile up. When it's full, I'll cash out and put the proceeds towards vacation.

I agree. There should have been a disclaimer at the end. This isn't a personal blog. I trust what I read here. Unlike a typical April Fool's joke, this wasn't SO over-the-top as to be obvious. There should have been a disclaimer at the end at the time this was posted (yes, I realize there is one now, but that didn't help those who read it early). AND to all of those commenting that "gee, you gullible people should have read the comment section," acquaint yourself with RSS feeds and understand there IS NO COMMENT SECTION if you are reading in an RSS reader. And again, many of us are looking at this site after coming to rely on it as good information. We're not reading with the thought that we need to be wary of misinformation, and we shouldn't have to be.

  • How to Throw the Most Fabulous (and Frugal) Baby Shower of all Time   15 years 12 weeks ago

One game that always seems to be played is the one where each guest receives a necklace. If that person says "baby" or crosses their legs, they have to give up their necklace to whoever caused them to violate the rule.

Winner at the end is the one who has the most necklaces.

What games do you guys play?

  • 4 Reasons Why a Roth IRA May be Better Than Your 401(k)   15 years 12 weeks ago

    @Andrew,

I like you laying it in such a succint format. To be honest, nobody can say with 100% certainty which method is better...since tax rates will most likely (but who knows for sure) rise by the time I reach retirement age (im 30 now). But let me lay it out like this:

Say I choose to put $100 tax free dollars into my 401k (above my employers match) every month...at my 25% tax bracket that would be only $75 a month in my IRA. That is an extra $25 of principal I am earning interest on... my rate of return since inception of my 401k is about 12%. That comes out to be an extra $3 month I earn in interest. Next month I now make 12% on $53 (25 from previous month + 25 from current month + 3 in added interest)...so on and so forth.

Let me also add that I do add much more than just $100 over my employer matching contribution each month...this adds up quickly!

Tax rates MIGHT go up...how much and when, we will never know, its all speculation. But right now the math doesnt lie...with 100% certainty you will make MORE money with a 401k (provided the same rate of return) but you can only guess with an IRA depending on the gov't tax rules some years down the road. Telling you to invest an IRA over a 401k is equivalent to me telling you the next big stock pick of the century, we dont have crystal balls.

Thanks for your feedback, I like when people reply to comments!!

  • How to Reward Friends Who Help You Move   15 years 12 weeks ago

My sister-in-law is dating a VERY big guy (football lineman) who offered to help us move. On top of pizza and beer we also gave him a gift certificate to a store he likes to buy meat at as they sell chops and steaks and such in bulk and he loves eating meat. So we got him a $50 gift certificate to help him stay well fed. He is a college kid so every cent helps.

  • Best Ways to Count (and Cash in) Your Change   15 years 12 weeks ago

FYI, if you are a Bank of America customer, you can get coin counting free. Stop in a branch and ask for a coin bag. They are free and made of heavy, clear plastic... similar to a giant sandwich bag. There is a spot for your account information. Fill it up with your coins, seal it, and put your information on the bag. Then drop it off at your branch. The teller will have you fill out a deposit slip with your estimate of the amount. They will then send the bag to a regional facility and in about 2 weeks, either debit or credit your account, depending on how far off your estimate was from the actual total. I did this at my branch in Los Angeles in October last year.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Still Have a Landline?   15 years 12 weeks ago

Yes...we still have a land line. One reason we still have the land line is because my husband is a self employed contractor and we need it for business calls. Thanks!

No landline. They're redundant with cells, which cover more ground.

  • How to Throw the Most Fabulous (and Frugal) Baby Shower of all Time   15 years 12 weeks ago

Another great way to do invitations is to design a 4x6 picture, and have them printed at Sam's Club or Costco. Last I checked, prints were about $0.14 each. And, if you are really tight on cash, they can be send as postcards, so you save on envelope costs, and reduced postage.

The best refreshments I have ever been a part of was when my sister and I did a baby shower for our other sister and served pie. Anyone that called and asked what they could bring, we told them a pie of their choice. I was amazed that we had almost no repeats. It was fabulous and pretty simple.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Still Have a Landline?   15 years 12 weeks ago

We still have a landline. It's more reliable than cell phone only. We have a habit of not keeping our cell phones charged all the time -- not good in an emergency.

We still have a landline. Use it for international calls.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Still Have a Landline?   15 years 12 weeks ago

i still have a landline- i don't want to be attached to a cell phone constantly and worry about dropped signals.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Still Have a Landline?   15 years 12 weeks ago

Yes, we do have a landline. We have talked about getting rid of it, but we have an internet package bundled with it that makes it less expensive to have the landline, too. Go figure!

  • Fast Food, Slow Food, and Your Dollars at Work   15 years 12 weeks ago

I don't buy organic, but almost all of my food items are one ingredient. Beans=beans. Carrots=carrots. It's basically whole, non-processed foods. Quite simple and not expensive either.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Still Have a Landline?   15 years 12 weeks ago

I haven't had a landline since I graduated from college in 2002. Being poor right out of school it just didn't make any financial sense to have to pay for the extra landline. It still doesn't make much sense.

  • DIY Shampoo: The Baking Soda Experiment   15 years 12 weeks ago

It 's worked for me! I still use a sulphate free shampoo every once in a while, but for the past year my primary mode of cleansing my hair has been with the baking soda and apple cider vinegar program. I gain a certain satisfaction from seeing the fizzy effect, and my hair has retained a good eight inches of length in the thirteen months I have used this. And baking soda is like some kind of miracle household product, because I use it for all manner of cleaning and cooking purposes. It shines the bath and kitchen,is leavening for baking, sanitizes my vegetables and fruits, exfoliates my face and freshens my mouth when added to toothpaste.Hey I am not spilling all the beans here. Go on and find out for yourselves.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Still Have a Landline?   15 years 12 weeks ago

I agree with you on that one. It doesn't die. You can't lose it either when it's stuck somewhere.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Still Have a Landline?   15 years 12 weeks ago

We gave up the land line years ago. The only time I missed it was when we didn't get an evacuation order during a wildfire but now our cell phones are registered to get them.

  • Studio Apartment Living: A 5-Point Survival Guide   15 years 12 weeks ago

Look up look up. !! I bought simple shelf brackets and put a shelves at several levels near the top of my room. all kinds of things can be stored there and can be decorative if you store stuff in colorful boxes. I alternate to make a collage of things dried flowers in a vase, books, boxes.

Also I do not use arm chair tables I use a big box filled with my extra linens cover it with one of those round decortive table covers and sit my lamp on it.

Desk .. on one wall I bought a folding table,6 foot long store my dirty laundry in baskets under it and some things i only use occasionaly covered the table with a sheet so it hangs to the floor on top.. my computer, tv, stereo, sewingmachine ect. so I got extra storage and somewhere to sit and write , eat, etc.
