  • Will A Dental Discount Plan Save You Money?   15 years 11 weeks ago

I used HumanaOne's Texas Dental Plan, a discount plan in Dallas, and got extractions for $38 each. Dentists around here start out at $159 per extraction and then some advertised cheaper.

Even the only "public" dental clinic around here, the Martin Luther King Clinic, wants a lot more than $38 for an extraction. Another semipublic dental clinic, Community Dental Centers, wanted $75 per tooth for extractions. Both were supposedly on a sliding scale.

Our local dental school, Baylor, is exorbitant now. They raise their fees all the time, and they are not cheap.

Then I got full dentures for about $1400 and soon will have to pay a $304 relign fee. Some dentists in Dallas demand and get $2400 for full dentures.

I am very satisfied with my dentist. He is ethical and good. I could have "dentist shopped" and gone to various ones advertising this-or-that. I'd already paid someone else $89 a pop for extractions.

When I found the good dentist on my plan, I stopped dentist shopping. I don't think I should have to pay $7 a month to get lower rates, but one plan told me it protects the patient and the dentist. So, by his taking the plan, he increased the chance I would finish the whole job with him too.

THAT WORKED SO WELL! I was able to save a ton of money at my eye doctor with a product I already owned! My lenses were so cloudy with scratched glare coating, it was really impeding my vision. NOT ANYMORE!!!

  • How to Make Your Own Soda   15 years 11 weeks ago

I have a Sodastream and want to use natural ingredients. Looking at the "healthy soda" section, I might want to try fruit juices. How would that work on the Sodastream? Should I put one liter of water, carbonate it and pour one liter of fruit juice, and combine it to a two liter bottle?

I find your apology above insincere at best. When you apologize generally you should show contrition and an understanding of why you offended someone instead of implying that they just can't let their hair down and go back to a time when things were more laid back and funny. I'm sorry, but Wise Bread as a blog and it's writers in particular hold themselves up as trustworthy sources of financial information. Much in the same way that news agencies do. A newspaper would have never run an article like this without an April Fool's disclaimer at the bottom for fear that it would loose credibility with it's readers, which you've done, at least in my case.

You seem to think that everyone would get this as a joke, without taking into account how fast gossip, miscommunication and hearsay happen in real life, let alone on the Internet. It's usually the poor, illiterate, elderly and others in desperate financial straits who get scammed. And they fork over money for far less wild claims than yours in a desperate bid for hope. As a finance writer you should be aware of this and have taken into account.

  • 8 Truths From a Mystery Shopper You Must Read Before You Get Started   15 years 11 weeks ago

I've done well over 100 shops that require me to pay for the food up front. I submit my information along with a receipt. All of which said companies have reimbursed me and given me a small fee (between $5-$20) 30 or so days after purchase. Like other people have said you have to spend money to make money.

I don't believe in paying to view jobs though, since jobslinger.com has tons of shops listed all of which are free to access.

Those who stuff envelopes with coupons or show up at their stores demanding cash and citing this article will learn a valuable lesson about the difference between fact and "something I read on the internet." Well played!

  • How Parents Save Money at Costco   15 years 11 weeks ago

The organic strawberry spread is a great product, but I was astonished to go to Costco to day and learn that it has been "deleted" from the list of stocked products. The manager suggested emailing Costco directly, which I have done, and I hope that other fans of this tasty and healthy product will do the same.

  • Should We Pay $2 Per Pound for Garbage Disposal?   15 years 11 weeks ago

The only issue I see is the fact that this becomes a fee that the city or county will raise when things get tight, like they are already doing now. Once it becomes common place and the laws are in place, they can start hiking the fees.
Also remember, they are selling that recycled value and still raising rates. And since very few corporations are focused on anything but profit, I don't trust them to maximize their profits as much as possible.
BTW, I live in a town that gets paid to use a trash service, and then bills us for that service.

The Wall Street Journal did pick up this story in one of their aggregates. Linking to legitimate news sources makes it look real, you shouldn't have linked to real things, then people would have thought, hey wait a second. (Italians harvesting spaghetti, Google toilet internet, etc...)

  • No Signal? 6 Ways to Boost Your Cell Phone Reception   15 years 11 weeks ago

Well while these tricks can improve signal quality, they can also cause your phone to "disconnect" from its primary antenna. I tried #1 with the wire, and although it did not give me better reception in the sense of "more bars", it did make my connection more stable. I use my phone to share internet with my laptop, and the signal can jump back and forth between 50kb/s and 250kb/s. After connecting the wire my connection only jumps between 150kb/s and 250kb/s. For that I am satisfied, but now my phone is reliant on the external antenna, as taking it off will lose all reception. I only use my phone for internet purposes, and not for calling/texting, so I can care less if I have to leave the antenna in. As a warning to others thinking of using this, use it only as your last resort.

  • 4 Reasons Why a Roth IRA May be Better Than Your 401(k)   15 years 11 weeks ago

The issue with Roth IRA's is what is preventing the government from changing the rules when it's time for me to retire, and suddenly my tax free retirement money is subject to a new tax anyway? And who plans on staying in the tax bracket they are in now once retired, I would rather pay taxes later, and bring myself into a lower bracket now, and be in a lower tax bracket when it's taxed in the future anyway.
