  • Ask the Readers: Do You Still Have a Landline?   15 years 5 weeks ago

I gave up my landline years ago. As a young person who always seems to move around, it just makes more sense. The only member of my family who still has a landline is my father, and that's because he lives out in horse country where cell reception isn't always the best.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Still Have a Landline?   15 years 5 weeks ago

no landline. i live alone and have no need for one. saves a lot of money too!

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Still Have a Landline?   15 years 5 weeks ago

Yes, we still have a landline. Our reason is that we Don't have a cell phone. Right now, it is not in the budget!

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Still Have a Landline?   15 years 5 weeks ago

Haven't had a land-line since I left for school back in 2001. Cell phone has always done the trick and I move around too often to be bothered with a number that changes all the time.

  • How Water Can Save You $977 a Year   15 years 5 weeks ago

We rarely get soda when we go out and we don't drink that much around the house either. I used to take a can of it every day in my lunch, but cut that out a couple of years ago in favor of tap water, so I'm already good.

No way do we eat out three times a week, either. For us, it's typically once a week, so right there alone is a bigger savings than the soda portion, and probably a good one to concentrate on first!

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have Pets?   15 years 5 weeks ago

I Do have a dog and I think the benefits outweigh the cost. There's so many pets that need homes and although it isn't cheap there are ways to save.
One big way is pet grooming. We bought a pet grooming set from a garage sale and have been grooming our dog at home ever since. This saves significant $ as pet groomers charge about $69 in my area.

  • How to Launder Money   15 years 5 weeks ago

    Screenwriter,

To launder through a 5 star hotel is possible. You build it new, fill it up with new furniture and start renting the rooms out to clients. Except here's the catch: Your guests are fake. The hotel stays empty for 2-5 years. Nothing gets damaged or worn out, but you have customers you are constantly invoicing. So the hotel looks very profitable. And at the end of the cycle you legitimately sell the complex to the buyer for a good price as the hotel was always full (on paper).

    I have no pets.

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have Pets?   15 years 5 weeks ago

I don't have any pets. I like them, but haven't had time to take care of them, mostly. Maybe will change that in the next few years. I also have moved around a lot, but plan to be a bit more stable now.

We are owned by 3 cats and 3 dogs. They are our entertainment, our mental health consultants and our medical consultants. They help pay for themselves by keeping each of the these costs down for us. We don't have to pay for the entertainment or going to a mental health dr or a medical dr for stress. LOL Plus no matter what you say they never tell your secrets, they are always happy to see you and they love you unconditionally. They have a thousand other uses, hand warmers, bed warmers, alarm clocks, early warning doorbells, alarm systems and many more. Most importantly they are family and we love them!

I had dogs for nearly 20 years, and said goodbye to my last a couple months ago. I miss having dogs so much that we've decided to adopt a new, older dog soon. Time to start budgeting and saving again!

For my grand-niece's Sweet 16 I gave her 16 portraits of our 16th President (16 $5 bills with Abe Lincoln)! A great tie-in to the event.

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have Pets?   15 years 5 weeks ago

Yup, we have pets. I've always loved animals and can't imagine them not being a part of my life. Thank goodness I finally found one I wasn't allergic to also!

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have Pets?   15 years 5 weeks ago

Yep! Cows, horses, sheep, chickens, cats and a dog. We love animals. Each one is different and has their own unique personality. Some of the animals can be a nuisance (I am thinking of my screaming cow). It is never a dull moment and they make for the most "unusual" stories. Why do we have them? Well, the chickens for the eggs and one cow for the beef, but the others are just pets. We save money on shots by doing them ourselves. Also, if you have a good vet, he/she will discuss alternative treatments if you explain you are trying to save money. It can be something as simple as an over-the-counter med versus prescription. I am not sure the benefits of ownership outweigh the costs, but we feel that no one could better care for them than us. Pet ownership is expensive and must be thought through carefully before taking the leap. My husband has renamed our farm "Hobby Gone Wrong"!!!

  • Should We Pay $2 Per Pound for Garbage Disposal?   15 years 5 weeks ago

IMO, the way to do his is to pay people money for recyclables. I'm no talking about 5 cents a bottle, either.

In my area, grocery stores sell milk in glass bottles and charge $1.50 deposit in addition to the milk price. You better believe I'm going to bring that bottle back to get a refund. If people could get a decent money for paper, glass and plastic, they would be more likely to bring it to the recycling center.

  • Alternatives to Flying: Other Ways to Get From Here to There   15 years 5 weeks ago

I too love the train. I have tried to convince friends who must travel from Buffalo to NYC that they are spending aproximately that same amount of time (8 hours) dealing with the airports for thier "1 hour" flight. Especially since the train takes you to the middle of Manhattan. No shuttle or limo from JFK or Newark. They just don't seem to get the idea, they are fighting tooth and nail that the train takes forever.

I, like you, maintain that the trip is about the same amount of time and much more relaxed. Also, it's hard to get any work done standing in line for security.

  • Teaching Kids About Money: An Interview with Dr. Brad Klontz   15 years 5 weeks ago

Some of my personal experiences led me to believe that the way a person handles money is in their genes. I have a large family and we are all really similar in how we try to earn and save money. I personally hate spending money, i also see that trait in my other family members.

I also see this trait from one side of my extended family, but not so much from the other side. It could be how we were raised, but i think there's more to it.

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have Pets?   15 years 5 weeks ago

We have three dogs. One was free, one was from the local shelter, and one was from a breeder. We save money by feeding them all the same Kirkland Brand dog food from Costco (with our Vet's approval.) Only one of the three requires grooming and we shopped around for the best price (after trying to groom her myself-a miserable experience for both of us.) We try to stretch out her haircuts to four per year to keep the price down. We've also been adminstering out own shots which we buy at the farm supply store, and then we notify our Vet to keep their shot records current. They bring us so much joy, entertainment and exercise that thay are totally worth the expense. Studies show that pet owners have lower blood pressure and our pets keep us active and get us out of the house more than we would otherwise. The biggest hassel is traveling without them so we try to go places they can be with us.

  • Ask the Readers: Should Personal Finance be Taught in Schools?   15 years 5 weeks ago

YES! Personal finance should definitely be taught in all schools. School is meant to educate and prepare students for the world and for life, regardless of the level, why would personal finance be something the education system would feel like leaving out, I'm sure if the majority of the population had a better understanding of how to balance a check-up or what interests rate were, we wouldn't be in half the debt we are in now, personal and national! It should be a topic in all levels, a requirement in High School like health and gym, and a basic course in College especially!

  • How to Make Moonshine   15 years 5 weeks ago

    Guest,

    Might as well. Recap:
    Sterilize everything.
Ferment the sugars (table sugar, grains or anything fermentatable)
    Distill the wort or mash.
    Filter, drink
That's it. If you want to make something better, you have to have recipes.

  • 10 Outdated Job-Search Techniques to Avoid   15 years 5 weeks ago

There's some great advice in here. Only thing I would add is that a lot of times the online application is unavoidable. Now, that doesn't mean you should start there, or use that as your only angle, but eventually big companies will have you fill out an application so they can get you in the HR system.

I'm totally behind the idea of using back channels or personal network - anything to stand out from the crowd. Eventually though, you'll have to apply online so be sure you're keeping track of what's due and when.

    Great stuff - thanks!

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have Pets?   15 years 5 weeks ago

    Doesn't everyone? :)

I am the proud parent of two cats, Duncan and Abby. They're family members--and for me, the only "kids" I really was ever interested in having. Well, one day I'd like a dog, but petkids are all I ever really wanted.

Although we don't keep expenses down (for example, Abby was having digestive issues til we switched to Newman's Own cat food) in general, I keep the ones we do have down by trying to buy smarter. We buy pet products from Amazon. I've researched out the cheapest (and yet odor absorbing) way to have organic, natural litter material. We have a ceramic fountain, but I found no-name filters that are the same size so we buy them instead of the higher-priced, name-brand ones.

Duncan regularly does something stupid--costing me anywhere from $500 to $1000 at the vet, so he has pet insurance. And after my "healthy" cat got instantly sick (and died), costing me $1500 in a day, my new "healthy" cat also has pet insurance. I brush their teeth, another cost-center with Duncan (he only has four left, so it shouldn't cost much more).

Overall, I try to spend money up front to prevent potential problems later. Just as I do for myself--good food, exercise, regular checkups, etc.

  • 10 Safest Cities in America from Natural Disasters   15 years 5 weeks ago

Wow no Texas towns. As large as Texas is you would think atleast one area would have been considered safe. Aside from Space Shuttle shrapnal Lufkin is very safe.
