  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have Pets?   15 years 5 weeks ago

Yes I have a 5 year old Pit Bull mix. A friend found her on the street when she was only about 6 months old and he took her in, his mom wasn't too happy and after two weeks she was a 'guest' at my house, but hasn't left yet. She's the best friend ever. To save money I use coupons for dog food and shop the cheapest prices. For health care there is a local vet clinic that offers coupons in the newspaper for check-ups and I take advantage of the local non-profit pet advocate agencies when they offer low or no-cost treatments and medications. The benefits of always having her around definitely outweigh the costs of owning my doggy, she loves me no matter what crappy mood I'm feeling, she keeps me healthy as I try to keep her healthy as she's my running partner, she reminds me to get up and do something every day and that's totally worth it!

The picture for St. Paul is of the Minneapolis City Hall. Granted, Minneapolis is mentioned below, but it's very amusing to us because of the friendly rivalry between the two cities. Minneapolis is larger but St. Paul has the capital. To list St. Paul but show Minneapolis is just wrong.

True, but the mountain is a popular recreation destination for Phoenix residents. It's less than an hour's drive.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   15 years 5 weeks ago

There is nothing wrong with the company. They get your information the same way junk mail does. Also this is not a scam cause you can only use what you loaded on to it. They are a good ideas to use when ordering over the phone or Internet cause they can't empty your entire checking account out, unless you load your whole checking account funds onto this card. Also since you have to put money on it in order to use it, if loaded and used regularly this can help rebuild your credit. If you have filed or know someone that has filed bankruptcy then you know you will get a ton of these prepaid card offers once you file. If you do decide to use one then do your research to make sure there are no monthly or yearly fees or a fee if your account doesn't have the minimum funds.

  • Disguise Your Stuff to Prevent Car Break-ins   15 years 5 weeks ago

There's not really any stopping people from stealing out of cars, so my solution is to make my car less tempting than other people's. I use the opposite of urban camouflage. When you look in my car, you don't see anything. It looks like it came off the showroom floor except maybe a bit of dust and such. No GPS, no iPod, no cds, no loose change, no junk, no garbage, no anything. The car is also always locked with the car alarm on. They try the door handle, the lights flash, so they know it's got an alarm. Why set the alarm off and have to grab and run when they see nothing to grab? It's just a bad idea. So they move on and look for easier marks.

My sister uses the opposite method because she drives a soft top jeep. As many people with a soft top do, she leaves the doors unlocked. She uses urban camoflage too. Anyone who leaves a bunch of stuff in their car, but leaves the doors unlocked, probably isn't hiding anything worth it, right? And they can check for themselves and find out that it wasn't worth the bother.

BMY007: This is a generalization and NOT TRUE for everybody!

This may only be true for a few people, not close to all as you claim.

When one decides to "buy" something, one has selected that item to exchange for hours of labor, represented by money, that can be used to buy anything else.

Why would I pay my hard-earned funds for the "excitement of anticipation" if the ownership of the item brought no real rewards? I would NOT do such a thing. If I did, the actual item would cause me to feel ANGER every time I looked at it or used it, instead of the satisfaction that accmpanies a good purchase.

What you claim may be true in cases of "buyer's remorse", but for the majority of people who buy what they need or want to fill needs, the purchase of an item is only the beginning of long rewarding relationship.

It is very surprising that Chesapeake VA made the top of the list, considering their vulnerability to hurricanes and flooding. In 2003, Hurricane Isabel wreaked havoc on the city. "The storm surge assailed much of southeastern Virginia, peaking at an estimated 9 feet along the James River; the surge caused significant damage to homes along river ways, especially along the middle reaches of the James River basin. The strong storm surge surpassed the floodgate to the Midtown Tunnel in nearby Norfolk; about 44 million gallons of water flooded the tunnel entirely in just 40 minutes. Winds from the hurricane destroyed over 1,000 houses and damaged 9,000 more; damage in the state totaled about $1.85 billion (2003 USD, $2.21 billion 2011 USD), among the costliest tropical cyclones in Virginia history. The passage of Isabel also resulted in 32 deaths in the state, 10 directly from the storm's effects and 22 indirectly related."

I hate to say this, but I live in Chesapeake Virginia and half the trees in our yard have been knocked down by hurricanes over the years. We aren't technically on the coastline, but we're only about 15 miles away from it. Every time the Outer Banks/Virginia Beach gets hit, we get hit. I would not advise the weather-phobic to move here.

  • 10 Safest Cities in America from Natural Disasters   15 years 5 weeks ago

I would argue against Chesapeake VA being at the top of this list. I lived there for 8 years with a constant threat of hurricanes and their resultant storm surge flooding the town's low lying areas (most of the town is near sea level). Hurricane Isabel caused extensive damage throughout the city, and could have easily been worse if the hurricane had not lost energy just prior to landfall.

The photo representing Phoenix is a picture of Superstition Mountain...not located in Phoenix at all. It is due east of Apache Junction...which is due east of Mesa, which is due east of Tempe, which is...next to Phoenix.
    Just saying.

  • Peak Debt and Income   15 years 5 weeks ago

There is, of course, a sliding scale.

During the dotcom boom, unemployment was pushed down to multi-generational lows, largely because there was a lot of very simply software work to do. Those tasks (fixing Y2K bugs, for example) were easy to explain and easy to check. The result was that a lot of people who had previously been considered unemployable were able to find and hold jobs.

Those sorts of jobs have largely moved overseas now.

Disability is also on a sliding scale. Lots of people who become gradually less able to work because of health problems, injuries, and so on are able to keep a job they already have, because the people they've been working with know them as a person, which make them willing to go to considerable effort to accomodate their capabilities.

Those sorts of accommodations are required by law, but it's a law that's very hard to enforce, so that never works as well as it does when the accommodations are motivated by caring.

The result is that lots of people who are actually disabled (in a legal sense) are able to hold a job, but not able to get a new one. Once they lose that job, they become totally and permanently disabled in a very real sense.

I've had my cat for 4 years now and I wouldn't trade her for anything. She's priceless to me. I save on food and treats by clipping coupons. Vet visits are expensive, but she's worth it.

  • Peak Debt and Income   15 years 5 weeks ago

As we studied in my Economics 101 class years ago........re: welfare and handouts. How about I load up my car with people each week who currently live on some sort of public assistance and each week I bring them to another place of employment for their new jobs. Think about it. Next week I will bring four to your office.

Some people are really not capable of handling the work environment. I'll bet you that after a couple of weeks of working side by side with them you might pay me to come pick them up and help get them on some sort of minimal public assistance so they could stay home and watch tv while you catch up on your lost hours of work!

I'm just saying that lazy is a catch-all term for those on public assistance - when in fact most people who are able to gain employment are working. The rest have very valid mental and physical health issues that make it impossible for them to succeed in the working world. It is beneficial to all of us to release them from our places of employment.

  • 7 Nutrients You Need More Of   15 years 5 weeks ago

what the majority of Americans are "awash in" is cholesterol, trans fats, and sodium. yes, Americans eat way too much on average and the overall goal should be calorie reduction, but the REASON we are where we are is that the stuff we shovel into our mouths is low in those essential nutrients(and fiber), so our brains tell us to eat more(ie. we still feel hungry) in an effort to get those nutrient levels.
if you eat nutrient-rich foods, you feel satisfied with much smaller portions, and the calorie problem largely fixes itself. BTW, i'm not just pulling this out of my ass; i've experienced it first-hand. when i was little 90% of my diet consisted of home-cooked meals and i ate very well(meaning quality, not quantity), and i was skinny and had a ton of energy. when i was 12-ish i started eating a lot of fast food and snacks, and that's when i became more sedentary and started gaining weight(i won't discount the role of hormones in that change, but the skyrocketing of America's collective pants size is a recent phenomenon, while puberty is as old as life itself).

I have a 2 year old black Lab, Pepper. She's my first dog and I can't believe it took me so long to get one! She's a handful, but so worth it! My local pet store has a membership that allows us to save a percentage on her food. We chose a healthier food than the common brands, but with the discount the price its about the same cost!

  • 7 Nutrients You Need More Of   15 years 5 weeks ago

I understand that if you consume a vegetarian source of protein, then you need to take in a vitamin C source as well in order to absorb the iron.

That makes spinach a great source of iron, as it contains both iron and vitamin C.

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have Pets?   15 years 5 weeks ago

We have three cats and feed them organic food. So, they're not cheap but cheaper than dogs. To be honest, though, if my daughter wasn't allergic to dogs, I would have two of those too! Love animals. They do cost a bit, but life isn't all about saving money. I do try to be as economical as I can, but my pets are worth it!
