    Hey GGNIN,
Well, it's a toughie. If the device isn't listed, it may not have a remote hack. I would search on the internet as a whole for a hack for your machine. You may find one hiding in a Google Groups forum for instance. Be prepared to do some digging. You may also need to update firmware on your device.
    Hope that helps!

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have Pets?   15 years 6 weeks ago

Yes, a 7 year-old male orange cat (neutered, of course). He was my baby and I adored him until I gave birth to my first daughter four years ago. From that day on I have loathed him. I don't desire to spend any more money on cat treats (to prevent puking), vet bills or cat food. Nor do I enjoy cat hair on all of my possessions or picking up cat puke. I'm over it! I doubt I'll ever have another pet again.

Hi Paul, but there's no info on my remote, what do I do?

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have Pets?   15 years 6 weeks ago

My husband and I have five cats and a dog. Believe it or not, this is down from our previous 5 cats and three dogs. We are currently on a tight budget and admit that the amount we spend on really good food for them and the yearly vaccinations and care is a big chunk our of our budget, but we are empty-nesters with no grandchildren, so we adopted these furry kids from the Humane Shelter and the fun we have with them and their personalities is worth the sacrifice of other entertainment. Besides having given some homeless pets a great life, we have provided ourselves with some unconditional love and countless greetings when we return home from a world that is sometimes pretty joyless. They are all spayed, so we know that this is the limit for us, but I would encourage people to adopt a couple of kitties or pups to broaden their world and get some good old love!!

The capitalist system clearly does not work, as is evidenced by TARP, etc. Granted, it has its positives, but nations that function far better than we do (assuming you're a fellow American here) incorporate multiple economic models within their overriding capitalist system. The totalitarian ideology present within the American mindset is beyond bizarre. We have multiple models that clearly work better than ours, yet to incorporate them into our system is seen as blasphemy. When ideology trumps practical workability, we've got some serious logical fallacies happening (and to our collective detriment).

Nevertheless, I don't note at any point where Brewer insists that capitalism doesn't work. An interesting interpretation of his article. You view criticism of certain aspects of the current economy as an assertion that the entire model is unsustainable? That is telling. And ironic.

But I do agree with you--let's get rid of the welfare, beginning with the most expensive model currently being funded by taxpayers: corporate welfare. Let's ditch the subsidies (start with the Farm Bill!), the taxpayer backed corporate insurance plans(e.g., Wal-Mart asking taxpayers to pay for their employees healthcare, etc.), virtually non-existent fines for breaking the law, etc. Excellent place to start.

I didn't realize making peanut could be that easy. Thats awesome. Peanut butter on celery is probably the best thing about this world. And i will look up some good peanut butter chicken recipes. That sounds very interesting! Thanks for the ideas!

  • Should We Pay $2 Per Pound for Garbage Disposal?   15 years 6 weeks ago

I live rural and trash pickup costs over $70 per quarter. Our county has recycling stations though. My Mom and I share trash collection--its at my house and I just take her trash home. My kids and I recycle all that we can. Since I won't buy convenience food and we rarely eat out, we don't generate enough trash to fill that huge can every week. It makes me mad that we can't get a reduction and have only a monthly pick up.

  • Wise Bread's Frugal Food Gone Wrong   15 years 6 weeks ago

FYI, Meg, as someone who used to sell produce at a farmer's market, I have to say your mistake was discarding the entire bag of corn because one ear had a lot of worms. Many ears of corn will have one or two, if not more. I would not have kept that one ear that was teeming (although my DH probably would have just cut off that section), but the others probably were ok. If you don't see the worms when you'r shucking, the boiling water or grill will kill the few that might be there.

My latest frugal mistake has been buying apples at the grocery store based on price, when the lowest price is *really* low. Those apples are old, or much lower quality produce than the rest of the display with prices within a smaller range.

  • What's Faster for Mortgage Payoff: $100/Month Extra or 1 Payment/Year Extra?   15 years 6 weeks ago

    @Heather

Congrats on your new home and pending graduation. It's okay to take your time and think about how to approach your new (and upcoming) financial status as homeowners and two-income couple. Your first inclination may be to pay off the loan as soon as possible but I would consider the full financial picture: funding / paying off student loans, emergency funds, retirement, and home maintenance. The home maintenance issues can be bigger than you may realize so setting aside money soon is a great idea, and can help you avoid taking out a home equity loan for improvements.

When things get settled (I anticipate this time for you coming in a couple of years) -- unless you have loads of extra money now -- then start considering paying extra then. I think it's easier to pay a bit more every month, and work that into your budget, rather than a big chunk at a time; though different approaches work for different people.

One of the reasons I paid extra on my mortgage was b/c we had the extra money and I didn't want to waste surplus on too many extras and not enough essentials. So, it was as much as discipline thing as it was a need to pay off the mortgage.

Hope all goes well, keep us posted on progress!

  • Should We Pay $2 Per Pound for Garbage Disposal?   15 years 6 weeks ago

I can see how this would help cut down on waste and also help increase recycling, however, I cant imagine paying this much for waste disposal on top of the taxes I pay right now...

I have a horse, actually. He is HUGELY expensive. I spend more on him than I do on rent, utilities, AND groceries. He is worth every single penny - a lot of equestrians say that horses are cheaper than therapy. He is my heart and my whole world.

There are some things I skimp on and some things I don't. I'm careful about buying new stuff just because. We can't really afford to show. But I pay a premium for quality care and training, and he gets whatever veterinary care he could possibly need.

In my own life, I basically spend no money - $20 a week on groceries, never eat out, get about $100 per month to spend on myself. I drive a 14 year old car with 180,000+ miles on it. I seek out additional part-time jobs whenever I can, and I lived with my parents for three years in order to build my emergency fund to where I could comfortably care for both of us for a year if I lost my job.

  • 7 Nutrients You Need More Of   15 years 6 weeks ago

So we all need to eat more spinach, oatmeal and chocolate milk?

  • 7 Nutrients You Need More Of   15 years 6 weeks ago

    more useless information.

The last thing people in developed countries need is "more nutrients". We eat so much food that MOST people are awash in all nutrients. There is absolutely NO CREDIBLE data that a significant percentage of people in developed countries are deficient in ANY nutrient. For the minority of folks that MIGHT be a bit off the curve, a single multivitamin taken every other day will provide what MIGHT be needed.

The major focus of the USDA guidelines are NOT (as implied above) to have Americans consume more of the above-mentioned nutrients -- BUT, rather, to reduce caloric intake and exercise. Good Advice.

btw -- I'm not sure that non-digestible fiber is really a nutrient (in the strict definition of the term) -- but the USDA guidelines have long been subject to political, rather than solely scientific, influences.

  • Should We Pay $2 Per Pound for Garbage Disposal?   15 years 6 weeks ago

Chiming in from Ithaca, NY - Paying for trash works well here because we have a strong culture of believing small actions make a difference. But we also have support to make it easy to bring your garbage bill down.

We have an excellent recycling system that allows us to recycle nearly everything and we don't have to sort. Everything goes into one big can.

Our local cooperative extension offers frequent classes on composting.

And the city picks up our Christmas trees and yard waste for free.

Without working too hard, I only have 1/2 a small kitchen garbage bag to toss out every 1 1/2 months.

However, after years of charging less to light garbage producers, the city recently got rid of small trash tags meaning those of us who cost the city the least are now paying more to dump. In the summer, letting your garbage sit for 3 months can be a big problem so I'm looking into sharing trash tags with my neighbor.

The key in making this work is not just charging for garbage but setting up an entire system in which producing less trash makes sense for everyone.

  • Is Six Figures Really That Much?   15 years 6 weeks ago

CAR PAYMENT? Not if I can help it! Given all of the other "necessities" in life...why would anyone by a NEW car EVER? I don't care how much money you have, you might as well burn it (along with the gas you can barely afford these days) than spend it on anything brand new! Vehicles have to be the biggest rip-off known to civilized society. They are all instant deficits with no chance of return. These days low mileage is around 100K...so why would anyone buy new? I find it appalling that the auto industry could ever justify the ridiculous price tags on cars. And I can't believe that people are willing to pay the equivalent of a small starter home for a motor with wheels! Sadly, most people splurge more on their rides than anything else as a EXPRESSION of their personalities. All I can see about your personalities with those kind of purchases is "sucker"...Hey...look how much I got taken for...all to drive this temporarily nice money pit of eventual rusted junk! Make practical purchases...in fact, BE PRACTICAL is the key to financial happiness!

  • Should We Pay $2 Per Pound for Garbage Disposal?   15 years 6 weeks ago

I live in a small apartment. I don't have the space for 5 bins though I do recycle more often than not. The problem is that if we implemented something like this we would probably be charged by the group- much like my water bill. I HATE the idea of paying for someone elses' garbage, especially when many of my neighbors might not "get it" either.

Then let's not forget about cats. I'll be honest, I'm a pretty good hippie and that compostable litter is terrible. I've tried every brand I could find and none of them worked for us. I refuse to suffer through the scent of pee lacing the air my daughter and I breathe just because its the greener option. It's just plain unhealthy.

I don't think this option would work for America, at least not in my lifetime.

I have an adorable, fat rabbit. Even though she is sometimes a butt, I am happy to have her in my life, and the expenses for a rabbit are considerably less than those for a dog or cat, which is definitely a relief.
