  • Great idea for Papa Murphy’s – make the pizzas in order.   16 years 3 weeks ago

Forget the price for a moment. I have standards. One thing I will not do, is cook a frozen pizza. If my pizza $5 more than a frozen factory-produced slab of ice, I am the winner, not Papa Murphy's. The next best thing is a 'good' Italian pizza place, and Papa Murphy's has just saved me well over $5.00, in tip alone.
Another thing I will not do, is Dominoes, Pizza Hut, Little Ceasars; or any other grease-pie franchise pizza chain.
I go to Papa Murphy's, not because I am looking for the cheapest meal on the market, but because I am looking for a pizza.
I can't say anything about bad service. Probably, talk to the manager... several days after you abandon the order. Waiting 80 minutes for an uncooked pizza goes beyond the boundary of reason. Don't do that. You had a bad customer service experience, which has nothing to do with pizza.

    Caution, nitpicking follows...

I think the "two trillion" and "thirty percent" would be more meaningful in per capita terms. Why not say, "Every year, the average American household brings in about $22,000 per person. Of that, about $6,500 per person pays for the groceries."?

Even smart people's comprehension of numbers can be greatly improved by the right presentation.

(In case you're curious, my calculation was just a simple division:
    $2,000,000,000,000 / 307,006,550 people / 0.30 = $21,715

Those numbers still look off, though. According to BLS data for 2008, there were 120,770,000 households in the US. On average, each of the households had a total before-tax income of $63,563 and spent $50,486 of that. $6,443 of the spending (that is, 8%) was for food.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   16 years 3 weeks ago

the thing to remember is that a card like this is an offer and there is no identifying information like a social in the system... this is not a credit card. Also the receiver of the card has to add money to it, its not an identity theft. Check the Better business bureau and you'll see the ratings of the company (yes i am an employee)
check out the company and compare with a standard bank...netspend has nothing to hide and goes above and beyond traditional banks

  • Yogurt: Should You Try Making Your Own?   16 years 3 weeks ago

I have a Waring Pro I bought at Tuesday Morning in Annapolis over a month ago and have been making several gallons of yogurt each week. I have 3 quarts of skim milk in my crock pot on warm right now that will become yogurt tomorrow morning - I use Activia and it only takes a couple of hours to firm up and is delicious.

I received a netspend card as well and what really bothers me is that it already has my full name on it. It should be illegal to send out cards with peoples names already on them. That's identity theft right there and waiting to happen. I tried there customer service number but no one picked up. I live in Austin Tx where apparently there headquarters are located and I will be seeing the attorney general and BBB first thing in the morning on Tuesday 6/1/10. This is ridiculous! Do not activate this card.

I personally have used Netspend for over 5 years now and have had no problems. I use the $1 per transaction fee schedule because I don't use my card that much. It's very convenient and the alerts give me a piece of mind. I love it!!

Mary, I just found a West Bend 1 quart yogurt maker at a thrift store, but it didn't come with any instructions. Do I add water to the incubator and then put the 1 quart pot of milk inside the incubator, or do I just leave it dry and then put the 1 quart pot of milk inside the dry incubator?

  • Defining Success: If You Don't Know What You Want, You Won't Know When You've Gotten It   16 years 3 weeks ago

I'm new here and have a question ...

I have always known what I wanted in life and I've achieved every goal I've ever set until the end of 2009.

I do believe that nothing lasts forever (friends, family, jobs, material goods etc.) and that the only thing that will stay with me for the whole of this life is my body so I do have to take good care of it.

Today nothing and I mean absolutely nothing motivates me. Everything is fine (nothing bad and nothing good). Friends say that I should do things that I enjoy, but I don't know what I enjoy.

I am bored and want to set a new target, but I don't have a clue in what direction to go.

Have any of you had a phase like this or is this a depression?

  • Start a Business for Next to Nothing   16 years 3 weeks ago

As a non-attorney and small business owner I could not agree with you more. One MUST seek out the advice of a lawyer, accountant or CPA and other professionals. This could save you thousands of dollars in the long run. Sure, free advice is easily found but it's a stretch to call it reliable. If your not willing or do not have the resources to hire these professionals up front then I suggest that you simply wait and when you come to your senses or have the money then go ahead with your business plan. Speaking of a business plan. That is your first step. Do not open attempt to open a business without a clear well written business plan. It willl keep you and your business on track.

  • 5 International Cities to Boost Your Standard of Living for Less   16 years 3 weeks ago

Having just moved from San Jose, I feel qualified to point out a few things. SJ is dirty, full of traffic, and getting more expensive. It has a large expat community, and certainly has access to lots of American style foods. However, it's not as cheap as they say, especially if your standard of living is American-style. We had a car, and the poor road quality and recent increase in traffic can really frustrate you. Personally, I'd live outside the city, learn my spanish, and realize that a Costa Rican's "yes" often means no. It's a beautiful country outside of SJ, but violent crime is rising. Plus, healthcare might not be as nice outside of the city. If you don't want an American style of living, try renting for a few months first. And read up on the laws... they are changing for non-citizens and becoming more stringent with regards to living in Costa Rica long term.

Take your child and run to the hills of West Virginia. You will need to live in a tent for at least 5 years, since your child's identity has already been compromised. It will do you both good in the long run, it's clearly the only way!

  • Why you can't trust a real estate agent.   16 years 3 weeks ago

Exactly. A home is listed for 325,000. You are offered 300,000. You would like 310,000. Would you go to Vegas and slap down 300,000 on the table because you might end up with 310,000 if the dice goes your way? Of course not. It's the same thing with selling a home. Just because you get one offer doesn't mean another is coming along, like a bus, in 20 minutes. In my area it can take the buyer and seller 2 weeks to get into fully executed contract because of inspections, etc. The owner is free to accept another offer at any time till they are in fully executed. I have sold homes in 4 day, 20 days, 15 on the market. . . During the the intervening period that the contract is signed, the home is shown. I had a 300,000 accepted offer on 315 asking--while waiting for signed contracts another offer came in at 260,000. Should they have turned it down and waited. I had a 240,000 accepted on a 249,000 list. while waiting for contracts there were NO other offers. People may sell a house or two in their entire lives. We are in the market every day, we know the market.

  • How to Examine Your Healthcare Plan and Save   16 years 3 weeks ago

Hopefully this article will be useful in the pre-research phase. Most companies also have annual enrollment sessions so if you want to switch plans, you can switch once a year. So, after you've settled in the new job and no matter what your first choice in plans was, you'll have some time to examine more closely and make a change if that makes sense for you. You can't always know what will be best but you can make a more informed decision.

  • Why you can't trust a real estate agent.   16 years 3 weeks ago

I've come to this discussion through a search, and I can tell you that Scott was spot on and you were ignoring his point, the the extent that in this post you change the subject. The point is a house sells quickly when it's priced near market value. Looking back on this discussion from 2010, his comments are even more pertinent today than in 2007. I just walked away from a homeowner who bought for 480,000 in 2002, and has been on the market for a year at 899,000. In our interview she insisted she was looking for an agent who wanted to take on a "challenge", would not accept less than 860,000, even though she acknowledged my data that showed her house would sell for 599,000-620,000 was correct. I walked away from that listing (and she has referred me twice since then! Score one for honesty and not buying a listing!). Another homeowner was listed at 980,000. I took on the listing a year later at 875,000. We had an 800,000 offer and I was basically thrown out of the house. 8 mos later when a comparable home on the street sold, we reduced to 825,000 and had a 750,000 offer a week later. I was dismissed again and released her from our contract. She has relisted with another agent-- for 950,000!!! This agent is engaging in an exercise in futility. This should be pretty easy to grasp.
