Wow this is truly inspiring! I too was waiting to read about some successful girls but still the fact that these kids started so young is awesome. I bet their parents could be voted "best ever", mine wouldn't be as okay with all of that! At least not at first.
Constantly fixing things ourselves. I recently bought a book calle "Fix it, Clean it and Make it last" and I swear by it. My very first washing machine was a second hand one. It worked fine for a while but then stopped spinning. My husband was away on business for that week so I took the back off the machine and discovered the belt had gone. Off to the hardware where I bought a new belt which then had to be modified as we couldn't find an exact match. Fitted it and it worked beautifully for years. Also used a coke bottle top to replace a belt wheel in my upright hoover and that's still going. I pretty much fix things right up until they die completely. Helps too when I have a handy husband who is also a mechanic...
When it comes to gas and electricity though I'll leave those for the experts.
I think dryer sheets do their intended job in the dryer, but I also hate throwing them away. A few of my own uses were listed in this post, and I'm do happy that I've discovered even MORE ideas -- thanks!
If you need a way to manage your recyclables until you get enough and the recycling centers will buy then all at one time. Go to web site and type in
moneybailer.com and see how easy it will be to really make money with your own recycling home business
I had no idea you could remove a dent with dry ice, has anyone tried it? Does it actually work?
on another note, I found a company Called Dashers Insurance who offers really cheap high risk insurance in California . I highly recommend them, they have given me great service for years.
my husband is the fixit guy...it's got to be a short term job (not something that will take 3-4 days ) and within his expertise, so not plumbing or electrical...most other things he will take a shot at (minor faucet repair )
It is very important to pursue all discounts. Everything helps and you can get great rates and coverage if you do your research. Read the whole contract before signing it, and make sure you obtain a copy for yourself.
I didn't quite get the "job" at first but love the concept -- applying different ideas to one's own situation. Everyone has a slightly different situation (current and anticipated) and motivation so it's nearly impossible to give ideas that will make sense for all. Helping people to consider different approaches and make informed decisions is the best we can do.
I had never thought of fear of not having the right gadgets, lifestyle, etc. as a financial fear per se. Nice take on the extremes of financial fear. I am not quite as insecure as I might have guessed.
Fear is emotion and money is math. There are so many purely emotional headlines with sensational warnings and predictions that many people are getting M.A.D.-Money Anxiety Disorder (this is a real illness). Try to take a look at your budget and concentrate on the math. How can income minus expenses equal savings. Warren Buffett makes good use of fear he says: "we attempt to be fearful when other are greedy and to be greedy when others are fearful".

While I was at the dollar store I bought one of those sink snakes to remove clogs. A few months later the shower had clogged up and I pulled out the snake and removed the clog myself within a few minutes. No need to call the plumber!
Great post! I have been thinking about this a lot lately and it is so true. Making your own laundry soap may help you get your finances in order. If your finances are already in order, it may not be material.
Sometimes when I read PF blog posts and comments I get the feel that all purchases must be justified and that any non-essential expenditure is "bad." Definitely helpful to get your house in order but a hard way to live forever. Remember to take time to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
My basic rule of thumb is...what would it cost to replace if I totally screw up the repair job? I am not a great DIYer (though I wish I was) unless it is a mainly cosmetic issue. Replacing a toilet? Do-able. Because the main cost is the toilet and attachments and I would have to pay for that anyway. Installing a ceiling fan? No, because I could mess up my whole electical system and that would be many dollars I would have to spend to fix again.
I just cannot disagree with you more concerning this:
"Avoid lawyers, accountants and other professionals. Reliable free advice is easily found."
As a small business lawyer (so you can dismiss this as self-interested if you wish), I find that nearly 90% of all clients who DIY their businesses come to me with a heaping helping of crappy organizational docs; miserable planning; missing, if not totally ignored, agreements for partnerships, profit sharing, vendors, etc.; and numerous serious errors which have inevitably landed them in my office with a larger (and subsequently more expensive) problem than if they had simply sought my advice and guidance in the first place. We have an expression in our office "you can pay me now, or pay me later. Now's cheaper." Don't take this advice, anyone who is starting a business. At least speak with a lawyer and an accountant. You WILL be sorry if you don't.

Thank you so much for this! I'm a pack rat and it's starting to drive me crazy!

Yup. Comcast ripped us off too. Sent a coupon for a free on demand movie, but never gave us the credit when we sent it in.

Guess what happens when you go to court to collect on your gold payment.
