  • How to Conserve Water by Harvesting Rain or Snow   16 years 39 weeks ago

What an interesting idea. I once did mission work in Cuba, and they also had a very interesting method of harvesting water. In Cuba there is no hot water, so in order to get hot water for showers they placed large metal tanks of their roofs, with a pipe leading down to the shower. Because it is so hot in Cuba, the sun heat up the water and the metal tank would keep it warm until it was used. I thought this was a great idea as well.

  • Best Money Tips: Screw It, I'm Buying an Air Conditioner   16 years 39 weeks ago

I moved to Maryland a long time ago. I was in one of those apartments that was half under ground. The windows were almost even with the ground outside.

After 3 days in sweltering heat, with the windows open (which provided no draft because they were so close to the ground), I gave in, bought myself two window units and basked in the cold air.

Never again will I sit in a sweat box like that! Yeah for AC!

  • Best Money Tips: Screw It, I'm Buying an Air Conditioner   16 years 39 weeks ago

I have 3 air conditioners, all fairly young that are going unused because I've opted against their use - and am very glad....

    * I save much needed money on the utility bill. I also just adjusted my water heater downward with no negative effects...

    * I get the great pleasure of fresh air. This has allowed me to sleep more readily and deeply than I had for years. Crazy dreams...

    * My allergies have largely cleared up...

    * I'm motivated to get outside (where it is often cooler) and to make use of our pool...

    * I'm getting used to the heat...

    * I'm being kinder to the environment. If we all did likewise, the impact would be huge.

My family and I lived in the jungle in Costa Rica and then on the beach there. No one used A/C. It takes getting used to for us, but it is in fact more natural, healthful, economical, green and conducive to being in touch with nature.

"But for the record, Wise Bread is more like a party in a private living room, not a public space. Not to put too fine a point on it -- there is no right to free speech here."

Excuse me. But anything on the Web is PUBLIC, with a capital P. WiseBread is on the Web. Posted for the world to see/read, if it so chooses.

WiseBread does not allow free speech? Really.

sad comment. I guess you're too commercial to allow for unedited stuff, which apparently didn't even violate your rules as stated.

    pathetic.

  • Cashflow: The Board Game That Will Teach You To Be Rich, If You Can Afford It.   16 years 39 weeks ago

I haven't played the game so I can't say for sure if it'll put you on the fast track to riches but I have heard (from friends who attend investing seminars and such) that it's at least worthwhile to try it.

Here's a few ideas for getting the game cheaper than retail. I'm in Calgary, Alberta, Canada; My appologies if any of these ideas don't apply to your area.

Post a "wanted" ad on Kijiji.com or some other online classfieds indicating you are looking for the game. Someone may have it to sell.

Find a financial and/or investment club in your area and inquire if they have the game (some buy it for their members to use). If they won't loan or rent it to you then find out if any of those clubs offer "game nights"...there have been some in my city.

Or search google for "cashflow game night" and you'll see there's quite a few going on. (sometimes it's part of a free investment seminar so if you feel those are a sham then......just don't go).

Find a few friends who are also interested in trying it and buy it as a group.

For your question: "Can a board game make me rich?"
Maybe not but if you play the game, find it interesting and subsequently start thinking more about YOUR money, where it's going, how to keep more and how to get more then perhaps the game is helping to put you on a faster track than the one you're currently on....

    Cheers!

  • Telling My Daughter the Truth about Her New 'Friend,' The Salesclerk!   16 years 39 weeks ago

You can't start early enough teaching your children to be smart and savvy shoppers. I've never had a whole lot of cash to spend on clothes or other things for my children (single parent 4 kids) but I did teach them how to shop sales and watch for bargains. My ex was amazed when my youngest came home from a shopping trip with one complete outfit of name brand clothes from the skin out, including shoes, for the $20 that he gave her to spend. They've learned where to shop, when to shop, and what to look for when bargain hunting. It's an important lesson to learn, that the sales clerk isn't your friend, but there to part you from your hard earned cash. Better she learns now, from her mother, than later down the road through hard experience.

  • Is there a secret code to control traffic lights?   16 years 39 weeks ago

Hey there are bunch of crazy laws. Such as ambulances can be pulled over and given speeding tickets even in emergencies. But from I found cops do often abuse their powers and toys. In fact peace officers the lovely trusted public servants they are can only break the law in an emergency. According to our laws put in place before we have now came so close to a police state says citizens can do a citizens arrest on a peace officer. Don't try it most likely you will be tased to death or shot in the back with hand restraints on like in the Oakland BART shooting. One thing I was thinking about if you can actually change the street light. Sense every street light is sequenced through out the entire city won't prematurely changing one disrupt the pattern. Most likely it will only effect that intersection otherwise I;m sure it would create chaos. Oh and in a peace officers defense most of them are pure philistines making it hard to blame them for being law breakers that have bad days just like us. I mean hay we are all humans right? We all make mistakes difference peace officers get away with it we don't.

Swing or Bouncy seat is a great thing to have. Changing table had one with my first and never used it once they get so big I couldn't lift them up to get them there so not a necessity, get a basket put enough diapers some wipes qtips alcohol hand sanitizer so you have every thing you need right there. I used my swing as a way to feed them until they could sit in a booster seat at the table. Hope all goes well

  • How to Avoid Putting on Recession Pounds   16 years 39 weeks ago

I was gaining weight eating out of large bags of chips. I found out the monosodium glutamate was stimulating my taste buds and making me pig out. So I made 100% whole grain and virgin olive oil crackers at a 4th of the cost of chips and some homemade bean dip. I rolled the dough in small balls and used two sheets tin foil or plastic between a tortilla press (faster and easier than rolling dough). Lost 4 inches in the waist in a month. Healthy can be cheap.

Hmm, methinks some people are using the term "worst" a little fast and loose here.

That Carl's Jr. burger sure looks good to me!

  • The mystery shopping scam that could cost you a fortune.   16 years 39 weeks ago

    Hi there

I have read the various posts here and am still curious whether the mystery shop I have been assigned is a scam. I have a cashiers check for $3,400 and I am to buy $100 worth of goods, keep $200 and send the rest.

I have not been asked for banking details or social security number. If I cash it, I will most definitely wait for it to clear before sending any money. I suppose this would just cost me the bounce fee if it didn't go through?

Apparently the name of the company I am dealing with is a well known mystery shopping company but I also don't know if they are simply using that name.

One thing that I am cautious about is that the Remitter on the check, the signature on the check, the person I am wiring the money to and the person I got the assignment from are all different (but I guess that could be explained as well even if legitimate).

Any advise. Is this possibly a real one? If not, any way of getting these guys?

    Mystified Man

Saturated fat is NOT bad for you! It's the carbs and transfats.

  • 10 Unhealthiest Restaurants   16 years 39 weeks ago
    KFC

I'm surprised KFC didn't make the top 10. I've read that they are the least regulated from location to location (both within your city and around the world), and that their saturated fat content is through the roof in comparison to other fast food joints.

I think I gained 10 pounds and clogged my arteries just reading this list! Mental note: avoid above mentioned restaurants. Cheers!

  • Cashflow: The Board Game That Will Teach You To Be Rich, If You Can Afford It.   16 years 39 weeks ago

I had a chance to play it a bunch of times with a friend who had bought the game. While I wouldn't pay the asking price for it, I found it to be a relatively fun game. I've also Played Puerto Rico, which is great fun - but not as "real world today" as Cash Flow is.

Having said that, although Cash Flow does teach you to evaluate opportunities and develop passive income, there is a certain element of luck (as with most games) that is uncontrollable. (Then again, that's life, isn't it?)

Whether you will benefit from the game depends largely on your current financial paradigm and education. I would suggest that the game is simply a way to emphasize the same lessons taught in his books. If you can learn from books, save your money and just do that. Regardless of whether Kiyosaki is a fraud or not, he has some great concepts to impart.

  • Is Target Really Just as Bad As Wal-Mart?   16 years 39 weeks ago

I am a single mom who has worked for Target for 15yrs. Its the first job I have ever had I could afford the insurance. I do not have a medical card from the state. I do not get food stamps. I get paid vacation that I have never had before. If you work hard and are willing to work whenever Target takes care of you. I own my home. I am not management. You get paid vacation at any level of job and insurance. I have never not been paid my overtime. They make sure we get our breaks. As for clothes I have bought at Wal-mart compared to ones bought at Target. After a few washings the Wal-mart ones look like they have been threw 4 kids and the Target ones have kept there shape and color. I could pay less and have my kid look like I buy her clothes at thrift store after a couple of washings. Thanks to Target I stand on my own two feet now. I am 45yrs old and I was an nurses aide for 11yrs before I came to Target.

  • Cashflow: The Board Game That Will Teach You To Be Rich, If You Can Afford It.   16 years 39 weeks ago

    Get a library card

Read all the books, learn the theory of all the maths behind it! Save your self the hassle of playing the board game and start a business! Don't buy into a rich person who made there money by teaching people how they got rich! The Theory of the books is correct!

  • Is Social Security Just A Grand Ponzi Scheme?   16 years 39 weeks ago

Defenders of the ability of Social Security to make good on its obligations perpetuate the slimiest rationales for why the system is secure - that it is backed by the most rock solid investment in the universe--US treasury bonds. Protected by the full faith and credit of the U.S. Governemnt, eh? All that means that the government is able to either print money or tax the very people they owe - the tax payer. How about if I guaranteed your investment in my retirement fund by writing checks against your bank account? And if you don't have enough money in your bank account, I can liquidate your assets to pay you back. And if that is not enough, I can write checks against your children's bank account.

  • Telling My Daughter the Truth about Her New 'Friend,' The Salesclerk!   16 years 39 weeks ago

As an uncle with a neice and a nephew who have wealthy parents, you totally made the right decision. Especially as a former sales clerk. Part of the job is schmoozing the customer. If you want your daughter to grow up frugal and well adjusted, and not be one of those people who goes shopping to soothe their depression or other negative life feelings, she needs to understand that buying the attention of a "friend" is not a good idea.

  • 10 Unhealthiest Restaurants   16 years 39 weeks ago

    Do a little more research.
The "original" restaurant (from the etymology of the term) served bouillon alone. As in "restore one's health".
    So, let's just say it's a flexible term :)
