More money for city government, less hassle for consumers, and you get something to gripe about. Everyone wins!!

Getting his eBay account shut down would clue him in as well. Hopefully enough people will learn to Google email addresses before sending money to anyone. ESPECIALLY anyone who claims to live in Europe.

This is a great story, Andrea.  Thanks for alerting us to yet another way job-seekers can fall victim to those with less than upstanding methods of getting business.

I'm security all over. I don't think that's a good thing though, that way leads to paranoia and never leaving the house.

There was one email that I would receive every few months from a resume writing service. They either spoofed their email address or made up a fake business name. It went something like this:

"Hi, this is Lois Smith, Human Resources manager from XYZCompany. I want to apologize for not having responded to your job application, which I realize my company received several months ago. We have since filled the position that you applied to, but as I was sorting through resumes to keep in our database, I happened upon yours.

I'm just passing on a little advice, as a former hiring manager and now HR lead: your resume is a little hard to read. I have trouble determining what your exact skill set is, and it's not entirely clear what job positions you've held in the past.

Writing a resume can be hard. Many of our current employees confessed to me that they used Resume HelpNow; it seems to be a reasonable service that helps people perfect their resumes. Just thought I'd pass that along! Good luck in your search!"

I freaked out, because I figured that my resume was already pretty good, and emailed several friends for help. The funny thing was, when I told them what the "hiring manager" had said, they all agreed "Wow, yeah, you really need to rework this", but not a single person had more than one or two superifical changes. The power of suggestion is amazing.

Anyway, I later learned that this service would troll through resumes on Monster.com, and then email people with the above fake HR advice (I was clued in when I received the second round of "advice" from another "company" with the EXACT wording and name as the first one). The key to the scam was mentioning that you had applied to the position months ago, so that you wouldn't even necessarily remember doing so.

My husband and I are working on our home to not just make it more energy-efficient, but also energy self-sufficient. Some of the technologies are mainstream (wind, solar) and others are rather experimental. My goal is to have the house generating enough electricity through completely renewable and environmentally responsible means that it actually puts power into the grid at least 80% of the time.

  • XBox 360 - Don't buy one until 2008.   18 years 26 weeks ago

Why are all these new next gen consoles having technical issues? My original Playstation 1 still works fine after nearly 10 years. Same with my original PS2, still working fine after 6 years. No problems at all. Suddenly we get next gen and no end of problems.

If you think im just sticking to the PS1 and PS2's, then the same goes for the N64. All the consoles of that era and earlier never had the amount of problems as there are today on 360 and PS3s.

  • Givin' 'em the Slip - Look Rich for Very Little   18 years 26 weeks ago

    Hi Sandy

I was born in the 50's so the slip was the first piece of lingerie we fellas ever got to see and in the 50's & 60's, all women wore them. In the movies. a woman in her slip represented nudity and you know what? it's a lot sexier as what you can't see is always the turn on, right?

You're dead right about them being attractive to men, I have to admit whenever a woman had one on show, I looked and I don't mind admitting it. What a pity that they have more or less disappeared. These lacy silky garments were always a welcome sight on a hot date!!

Well that's nostalgia for you, keep wearing them
    With very best wishes

  • The Quiet Millionaire: Part 1 – What is Important about Money to You?   18 years 26 weeks ago

This post resonated. Speaking as one of those "quiet millionaires" who was motivated by security issues to acquire money, "security" has become a moving target. The number of assets which will constitute "security" keeps mentally going up and up and up and always feels unattainable, and the fear of risking assets continues.

Of course now that he knows people are on to him, he'll just change his email address and form letter and keep on scamming people...

  • The Quiet Millionaire: Part 1 – What is Important about Money to You?   18 years 26 weeks ago

Those descriptions were straight from the book -- I most identified with security and freedom. I think it would help to revisit those descriptions from time to time, as what is important in one phase of your life may change, and then how you spend your time, invest, etc. should be reviewed and updated.

  • The Quiet Millionaire: Part 1 – What is Important about Money to You?   18 years 26 weeks ago

I like the descriptions of why money is important to different people. I don't think most people understand why they want money, just that the think they need it. Perfect Life Project is all about making enough money to live the way you really wish you could live. By definition that could mean that someone on $50,000 pa who is chasing their dreams is actually rich.

  • Cracking the Infamous McDonalds Monopoly Game   18 years 26 weeks ago

I too have all the colors except one for each and all it does is either land on tax or land on the pieces I already have. It also has gotten stuck and stolen pieces. I am on a diet and now unfortunatly addicted to the dumb game because I keep saying what if...
I will check back on this message boards and hope one of us can crack it because this is really frustrating although unusually fun. Mean to say but I feel better now that I know it's not just me it's happening to. I just wish we can enter more than one a day, hehe!

  • Everything You Need to Know About Unclaimed Property   18 years 26 weeks ago

I am aware that about $600 is owed to my ex-partner and I because of an overpayment related to a house we owned together. The public listing has both our names as payees. I lived there for three years after he moved out, so I'm the one who overpaid. Because it would be worth much more than $600 not to have to deal with him again, I'm wondering if anyone is aware of a way to have the money released to one of us, well... me.

  • When Priorities Collide: How to Keep Your Head   18 years 26 weeks ago

Here are some questions to sort through your dilemma: do you need your wife's income to pay the bills? does it matter that the income is not consistent (other than being frustrating during the months that are low paying)? does she have long term goals that either running the business or working will help her meet? are there employers in your area that offer 1) flexible work schedules 2) on-site daycare 3) incredible healthcare or retirement benefts and 4) tuition reimbursement?

  • Cracking the Infamous McDonalds Monopoly Game   18 years 26 weeks ago

My online gameboard looks just like the paper one. I've collected all but one of each set.

It absolutely has to be rigged because they say there's ONE chance per hour to land on GO and one chance per day to land on Free Parking to win some money. There's a free code on all the paper gameboards and the Mcdonalds paper bags. I got four doubles in a row with that code- which is the same code everywhere.

Right now the game is sitting open in my browser doing nothing after I entered a code and clicked submit.

  • The Cost of Giving Baby a Bad Name   18 years 26 weeks ago

Our last name is odd enough that we went with a simple first name for our child.

But the resume issue does resonate. My child and I play a game sometimes -- I can almost always guess the race of his classmates by the (frequently remarkable) complexity of their first name. I hope by the time they are sending out resumes that the world has changed enough that no employer will make judgements or care.

I'm doing my best to cut down on my meat consumption. I don't think I'll ever give it up entirely, but if I eat it once a week or less instead of nearly everyday as I did when I lived at home, that should have a serious impact on the amount of energy required to produce my food.

  • Borrowing to Invest: Helpful or Hurtful?   18 years 26 weeks ago

I would first like to address some observations that I have noticed within my circle of friends.

The guy who "usually" says that debt is always bad, is the same guy that has credit card debt at 18% because he buys every gadget as soon as it comes out.

That is foolish. The interest is high and non deductible. Meanwhile the assets that he purchased with that debt is depreciating at a rapid rate.

The guy who "usually" says that debt can work to your advantage is the guy who has zero credit card debt but will borrow to invest.

Allow me to put forth an idea. The stock markets over the long term generally perform at about 10% per year. No major index outside of the Nikkei has ever had a negative 10 year return. EVER! What if you built a well diversified portfolio. Either 10 mutual funds that cover everything from small cap to large cap. US, Europe, Asia, Emerging markets etc. Or if you prefer stocks, you need to be in at least 100 stocks. Mostly blue chip and preferrably ones that pay dividends.

If you are invested in companies such as big banks, WalMart, McDonalds, Proctor and Gamble, I would argue that you couldn't lose money even if you tried. These companies are huge with enormous revenue and are essentially recession proof.

Even being conservative, lets say we average only 8% annual returns for 20 years. Lets say we borrowed $100,000 at 6% and paid interest only. The payments would be $6,000 per year. Over 20 years the cost would be $120,000. However, if we factor in the tax refunds that we get from the leverage (lets say 33% tax rate) we would get back $40,000. Net cost out of pocket over the 20 years would be $80,000.

Our investment would grow to $466,000. After we pay back the bank it's $100,000, we are still left with $366,000. Even if we factor in $66,000 of taxes, we are still up $300,000 net of taxes. If we get 10%, our net profit would be $500,000.

Long story short, as long as you don't get greedy, you can really limit your down side while still benefiting from a leverage.

The best I have seen thus far is a guy named Talbot Stevens. Do a search on him. He has a strategy of leveraging conservatively.

Someone already made a great point. Debt is not bad. Debt is bad if used irresponsibly.

  • When Priorities Collide: How to Keep Your Head   18 years 26 weeks ago

Here's what I would decide in all the above situations (based on my own priorities and without too much explanation - oh, and this is not what I recommend everyone else to do... just what I would do):

    1. Find a way to work at home with flex hours, but not put the child in daycare. This way I could fully concentrate on taking care of and spending time with my child (especially if this is a life threatening disease)... and then when baby is asleep or dad is home... I could do some work. It would take longer to pay off debts... but there would be no possible feeling regret for not spending the time with the child (especially if the possibility is of losing the child to the disease).

    2. I would spend the kids college funds. Sorry kids. It was a nice plan to provide for their college educations but compared to a necessary medical procedure/bill, college all-paid is a luxury. There are others ways to get through school.

    3. Goodbye great deal. Instead I'd probably lament to every other video game loving friend how I had to spend my money and then mooch off them for play time as much as possible. Again, it'd be the whole "necessary versus luxury" situation.

    4. (This is very similar to my current situation, but not exactly the same.)I would probably weigh the idea with how fast it can get up and running and provide the necessary funds... if it is quicker than the average "upstart" (2 years I think), then I'd put some serious "overtime" at home to get it up and running. If not, I'd say "oh well". Mainly because graduate degrees tend to not last too long and after getting a degree, there is often a move involved which could really hurt a business that finally made it into the "black". I'd also wouldn't want a "good idea" to possibly derail my husband's dream and something that was previously sat-down-and-considered-to-be a priority. Rather, I'd want to find a creative way to make them both come true sometime, if possible. And if it isn't... it's sad, but maybe a new idea will come later down the road.
