  • Cure it with Garlic!   18 years 36 weeks ago

Being critical of a dubious claim is hardly a 'nastygram'. Claims require evidence. While I understand that herbs can have medicinal effects (that's where drugs originally came from), it is the effectiveness that I'm questioning.

Here is a report from the Institute of Food Technologists Expert Panel on Food Safety and Nutrition.

Please feel free to read the section on Garlic on the fifth page. While there is marginal evidence for garlic in some cases, there is also opposing evidence that it doesn't do anything. In any case, you can't make a recommendation on garlic, when the studies are inconclusive.

Sorry someone inappropriate chose to blast your post, Linsey. I think it's a good one, and the medical benefits of garlic are well known. We use it a great deal for many of the reasons you listed. I've even heard of turning the minced raw stuff into a salve with vegetable shortening and keeping it in the fridge for use as a chest rub for small children.

    Keep up the good work.

I think you meant to say "If your medical bills exceed more than 30% of your income" rather than "If your medical bills exceed your income by 30%"

Also, the comment above mine should be BALEETED!

Be serious. I'm constantly amazed at the amount of misunderstanding and ignorance of the standards of evidence. The question is: do you keep a log of how sick / well your husband feels, with and WITHOUT garlic?

If you do and can demonstrate this to a wider audience under controlled conditions with MANY people, then you'll be eligible to publish the results in a real medical journal.

If not. Please stop spreading anecdotal "evidence" as reality.

Gee... I know that every time I sacrifice a goat during an eclipse, the sun comes back. Goat sacrifices work right?

  • Remove Car Dents Quickly and Cheaply   18 years 36 weeks ago

I did this on the back hatch of our SUV. It has a huge smooth indentation from where one of the juvenile delinquents in our neighborhood kicked the door of the truck.

Sunny hot afternoon plus hair dryer plus canned air. It pulled half of the dent out. I used the purple canned air sold at Target. I would suggest a different brand. This can didn't get as cold as some others do. It also had a bittering agent to prevent inhaling. The residue in the air from emptying the can landed enough of the bittering agent to taste it on my lips all day and it didn't just wash off.

I probably could have pulled the rest of the dent out if I had more than one can. So next really hot day I am going to be armed with three cans to see if I can get the dent all the way out.

  • Almost 2000 uses for a can of WD-40   18 years 36 weeks ago

Yeah, no fault to you--you were providing a link and an excerpt. Sorry if it came out the wrong way.

I think a revised list that cuts to the chase is an excellent idea. The whole thing reads like brainstorming that wasn't taken any further, which is too bad, since it's a good idea for a list.

  • “Shop in stores with concrete floors.”   18 years 36 weeks ago

I have a friend pick me up some items when he goes to those stores.I also belong to The grocerygame, there is a small fee for joining , the first store is 10.00 and every store after is 5.00 every eight weeks. It is just my husband and myself but we save over 50% or more every time we shop. The web site is worth checking out if you have never heard of it . There is also a trial membership for 1.00 for four weeks and the list is everyweek for items at the rock bottom prices. Thegrocerygame.com

  • Bottled Water, Bottled Hype Part 2   18 years 36 weeks ago

Haagen-Dazs (HD) is one of the very few ice creams you can buy at the grocery store that contains real cream. Cheaper brands have "modified milk ingredients". That's why when it melts, HD actually looks like cream and the other stuff is a frothy, unappealing goo.

I'm not saying that's the only reason for the price difference, but it is a big one.

  • Baby Carrots: The Frugal Idea That Isn't   18 years 36 weeks ago

Hooray for this post! I have gotten into countless standoffs with people about this--the outside of the carrot is indeed the sweetest and and has the most nutrients, and more than just beta carotene. Even eating a little of that gritty dirt supplies oft-needed minerals! I have been anti-baby-cut carrot since they came out, spread the word of the baby carrot lie! It also drives me bonkers when people actually have the sense to buy uncut carrots but then proceed to peel them! kudos to my fellow non-peelers (mashed potatoes with the peels on, too!)

  • Decked out in... dog? More reasons to boycott Chinese goods   18 years 36 weeks ago

I am boycotting - and it can be difficult - so very much has a made in China label.

    Why? -invasion of Tibet
    -Tiannemen Square
    - selling antifreeze as glycerine that got made into cough syrup and killed over 100 people (maybe more)
-selling melamine as a dog food ingredient and killing the animials
    -religious persecution
-denial of medical issues (ever ask yourself why the place where SARS originated had very few people (officially)die of it? Or why 'nobody' has AIDS in China?) This sort of denial of a problem could be the trigger that allows the next (flu) pandemic to get out of hand
-lead in the paint of children's toys
-counterfeiting - millions of dollars worth - do you know there is a 'counterfeit-sniffing' dog somewhere in SE Asia with about a quarter million dollar bounty on her head?
-car theft - thousands of autos stolen and shipped in containers.....
-loss of jobs elsewhere - so you can get a cheap DVD - your taxes are up because the guys down the street lost his factory job.
    - and maybe lost his factory job to a slave - don't buy the line about better conditions being good for the Chinese - did you see the pictures of the kid (slave) kept in dog cage?
    - - - -etc- - -

yes because having the government ration health care is so much better.

You had to know it would only be a matter of time before this got political.

  • How to Erase Your Medical Debt   18 years 36 weeks ago

Rather than playing the for-profit insurance game, we need a single-payer system similar to Medicare. Removing the for-profit insurance companies from the medical equation reduces medical costs by 1/3 and frees up doctors to practice medicine (without having to consult with clerks).

    Wow

That's really interesting. I watched Sicko and thought there was no way out of huge bills.

I guess I'm wrong. There is one solution.

I really appreciate the heads up. That may come in value one day.

Wow, Victoria, that's crazy! $1400 for a stitch?!? I'd be outraged too! Thank goodness she had insurance.

lol. That is a crazy list. Found this post by StumbleUpon.

  • Baby Carrots: The Frugal Idea That Isn't   18 years 36 weeks ago

I've always wondered why there were no points on these, but nicely rounded at both ends. I envisioned a guy with a pile of carrots sitting in front of a lathe all day, and at the end of the day he takes off his goggles and his whole face is orange except for right around his eyes . . .

  • How to Erase Your Medical Debt   18 years 36 weeks ago

Recently a friend was charged $1400 to her insurance for lacing up a cut on the finger with a butterfly stitch. We were all outraged. This tip is surely one of the best I have come across all week. Thank you, I really mean that.

  • Baby Carrots: The Frugal Idea That Isn't   18 years 36 weeks ago

There are varieties of carrots with purple skin, as I mentioned in the article. But the inside of a carrot is usually orange, even if the skin is a different color.

The carrots that I ate in Western China were really thick and short, and were either light orange or yellow.

  • Almost 2000 uses for a can of WD-40   18 years 36 weeks ago

I have to objet to #190, because I think it's pretty toxic. But it is fabulous stuff. I bought a can a few years ago, and I've been surprised just how often I need to use it. Especially living in Seattle. :)

There was NOT a WD40-scented cologne! Right? There wasn't, was there? Because if there was, I'd so swoon.

  • My car payments are too much! What should I do?   18 years 36 weeks ago

As it stands, I'm not sure that I'll be able to sell it just yet, but I will definitely use it less than I do now.

As to using it to earn money, that's a great idea, but I don't have the time. Between my full-time job, my part-time job, blogging, and volunteering, I don't have the spare minutes to run other people's errands. Hell, I can barely handle my own!

  • Cure it with Garlic!   18 years 36 weeks ago

Great post, Linsey. I know that garlic is hugely popular in other countries for its medicinal qualities.

When I get sick, I make a 3G tea - garlic, ginger, and ginseng. Tastes a little gnarly, but it usually helps me get over the common cold a lot faster.

  • How to Erase Your Medical Debt   18 years 36 weeks ago

Thanks so much for sharing this with us. If you have any tips for dealing with stupid-head insurance that refuses to cover your medical bills, I'd love to hear about that, too!

  • Almost 2000 uses for a can of WD-40   18 years 36 weeks ago

I think you need to exercise your own personal judgment on these tips. Basically, cherry pick the list.

  • Almost 2000 uses for a can of WD-40   18 years 36 weeks ago

I don't think you are supposed to ever use it on dishes, silverware or cooking pots, even if you plan to wash them later. What if some other person eats with them without knowing they are covered in WD-40? Also it sounds risky to put something sprayed with WD-40 on a hot burner. Mmmm...fumes...

  • Almost 2000 uses for a can of WD-40   18 years 36 weeks ago

Thanks guest. So what you're saying is use WD-40 to cure a sticking problem, but then wipe it off and lubricate with oil, something designed for the job. Good advice.
