  • Mind Control Guru Can Pay With Blank Sheets of Paper   18 years 36 weeks ago

Seeing from your other posts that you are in advertising, you might like this trick Derren did a while ago: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyQjr1YL0zg
Not sure he does it the way he says, but impressive either way.

I've been a fan of Derren for sometime now and having read all but 1 of his books. (I own his latest and Absolute Magic) and as he says in his books and at the beginning of the show should bring up a healthy bit of skepticism. As a fellow magician I understand where he is coming from in fact, my line of study is what made me a fan of Derren, seeing as what he does was in line with most of my interests.

It's NLP to some extent... but of course just not that simple.

I agree that alcohol has some specific health benefits, but there are also some specific health risks with alcohol. On the whole, it is very unclear if the overall benefits outweigh the overall risks. For an "alcohol is bad" viewpoint, see Dr. Mercola's view on alcohol. For a more neutral view with both benefits and risks, see Wikipedia's article on alcohol consumption and health.

    Meh

I figure that they're pretty much set to take over the world as it is. You can either make some money off of it, or let it happen without making any money. Or rebel.

MInd control begins, so says Derren, with learning human behaviour and part of that is distraction. But it's not all about that. Check youtube for the piece he did on making people forget their stop on the London tube. Then tell me, was it just distraction?

  • Mind Control Guru Can Pay With Blank Sheets of Paper   18 years 36 weeks ago

More or less distraction vs. mind control?

  • Mind Control Guru Can Pay With Blank Sheets of Paper   18 years 36 weeks ago

Interesting comments on the Derren Brown youtube about mind control, his choice of words, the banging on the window etc. Good stuff.

The jury for the "they" to describe singular nouns is still out. Yes, it's awkward, but I believe the "he/she" alternative is even worse.

How does a child learn how to drink responsibly? By having proper role models, and by beginning to drink in a protected environment.

Certainly by the time they're 14 or so--perhaps even younger--children should be allowed to drink alcohol when it's situationally appropriate--a small glass of wine at a holiday feast, half a beer at a summer picnic, etc. The amounts and frequency should go up gradually, so that by the time they're 17 or 18, children are treated as adults in mealtime wine or beer drinking. By the time they're 21 (and can legally buy their own booze), they'll have been drinking for so long it should hardly even count as a rite of passage.

And yet, if you raise your children that way, (in the US at least) you're in real danger of negative attention from the child welfare authorities.

Of course things should be very different in a household where a family member has an alcohol problem.

I raise my 7AM gin and tonic to you, Phillip!

In all seriousness, it does seem that at least in the US, alcohol always gets a bad rap. Perhaps it's the country's teetotaling past (it's only been about 75 years since Prohibition), the seeming everpresence of DUIs, binge drinking college kids, or some combination of them all, but it seems like you can't say a decent word about having a drink without coming across as alcoholic. I think there would be a lot less problems with drinking if the stigma attached to it were lifted, and responsible consumption were encouraged. (As I understand it, other countries don't have anywhere near the problem with drunken teenagers that the US does, because there's no novelty to it.)

I think a glass or two of wine with dinner, a martini at lunch, or an after dinner scotch would be a great tradition to encourage, and might just cut out some of the beer-chugging, tequila-shooting partying that gives drinking such a bad name.

Nice post. Sometimes it's difficult to understand the Medical Community; they often don't come out and publicize things based on political correctness or other agenda. The information you post is not surprising to me. Having grown up in Spain it used to be normal custom and tradition to always have lunch with some wine. One or two glasses. Children were even given a taste of it because people believed it was good for them. This was very moderate consumption. You didn't get up from the table drunk! You went on with your daily routine and so it was. Those traditions changed drastically with the medical community warnings on alcohol abuse, which obviously can occur as it can with anything that goes beyond moderation. Hence, that little wine at lunch or dinner was changed for healthier coke and other soft drinks. As a nation we've grown way fatter, with increases in heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, etc., and all the other ills that accompany the so-called modern societies, while alcohol abuse remains the problem it has always been and will be in all such nations. Moderate alcohol abuse is no panacea; nothing is on its own, but the medical community must be frank on its findings and explain proper, natural uses of "healthy" substances without the restraint of political correctness.

A better idea is to remove the light bulb from the head lights, connect it to the wires and - you have a mobile light.

  • AT&T Offers $10 DSL Plans   18 years 36 weeks ago

The hidden extra cost imposed is $6/mo for "access", a charge "allowed by the FCC". So, the service is $16/mo, bottom line.

The quality: My terminal is several hundred feet from the neighborhood's main hard-wired junction box. My 786kbs-paid-rate is verified available there.
Losses in the buried cable between the box and my computer cost about 100kb.

Speed tests always show the same rate: about 690kbs on average for download, and about 108kbs upload.

That's fine and fair. The service is reliable. There has not been an outage yet noticed.

The bandwidth is adequate for downloading YouTube quality videos in streaming mode.

Therefore, I'm happy with the service. It beats dealing with terribly, unresponsive, unresponsible, unreliable Comcast cable.

    A good deal.

allowed the brasso to dry? You then need to buff it off with a soft cloth. Also, I am not in favor of circular rubbing, despite what some people say. I prefer rubbing from center to edge. But, you defintely need to buff off the residue.

Thanks for the explanation. I've tried brasso, i've been rubbing it gently in a circuler motion, for around 5 minutes, and nothing has happened.
How long do I have to continue rubbing?

While most people probably have grounds for disputing the "inherited debt", here in Nebraska (where the family farm is still the most common occupation) it most definitely is a reality.  Granted, that with the debt comes the land and assets, but usually the ends don't justify the means.

And with aging grandparents naming children as executors of their estates, it may not technically be "your" debt, but you may be responsible to administer payment.  Debt collectors don't often care who pays, how they pay, or with who's money.  They can be equally ferocious.....

And to answers Barbara's question, before my current life as a WAHM to 4 babies, I was a project manager for a subrogation and overpayment collection firm.  It was very upstanding, and as part of our employment with the agency, we were required to take week-long courses on the FDCPA.  Debt collection can be an honorable occupation if done lawfully and with respect.

Thanks for all the great feedback!

Isn't it amazing that these things cans get linked all over the place? I've told just about all of my friends about this site, and a few have started reading posts here on a regular basis. You guys and gals write some really awesome articles!!

Linsey, your post is spot on. How did you find out all this? I've unfortunately had to deal with creditors in the past (many, MANY thanks to an ex-boyfriend who put stuff in my name) and a couple of them got really nasty with me. I was at a loss when they did so because I knew I wasn't in the wrong, but the situations got complicated, etc. Anyways, thanks so much for great information!

There's the takeover of US Banks.

  • What's Faster for Mortgage Payoff: $100/Month Extra or 1 Payment/Year Extra?   18 years 36 weeks ago

We are still in our first house, which we purchased in 2001 just before we got married. We paid 86k for it. Our first loan was for 30 years at 7.375%. We refinanced in 2003 (when rates were so low) at the advice of a friend.

Our new loan is 15 years @ 5%; we are 4 years into it and are looking at paying our home off before we're 40. Our son will be 13 then.

This means that we'll have the option of going on some nice vacations then. Perhaps I'll finally restore our old mustang. Or, if his grades are looking like mine did when I was in high school, we'll sock more away for his college. :(
