  • Frugal travel with Esperanto   18 years 39 weeks ago

I've never heard of Esperanto and wondered what it was. A quick wikipedia search was quite enlightening. Apparently, Esperanto is a language developed in the late 1800s to promote international peace. While no country has adopted it as their official language, there are millions of people who speak it.

Cool beans. Learned something new today. Thanks!

  • My car payments are too much! What should I do?   18 years 39 weeks ago

Even though you want to sell now, what if you utilized your free bus pass and motorcycle and minimized using the car? By driving fewer miles, as a pleasure vehicle only (remember, the bus/bike is your primary transportation now), your insurance premium would likely be smaller. Your fuel/maintenance bill would also decrease, you'd still have the car for bona-fide emergencies, if that is of concern.

Since the model year just rolled over, the value probably wouldn't change much in the next 6 months (remember, not very many more miles driven), and at that time you could reassess your situation.

During that time, of course, you would invest the savings (and/or pay down debt) and see if you still felt the same way about owning the car. Just my .02. Good Luck!

  • My car payments are too much! What should I do?   18 years 39 weeks ago

Dump the car, buy a cargo net for your motorcycle, and join the car share.

I started riding 3 years ago on a Buell Blast. I upgraded to a GS500 last October. In December, my brother needed reliable transportation to get from the college he was at to his internship, and I bit the bullet and sold him my car.

Having a motorcycle as primary transportation is the most frugal thing I've ever done. My car was paid off, so I didn't drop a car payment, but I saved on insurance and gas. More importantly, it almost totally stopped me from impulse buying. "That big screen TV? On sale? Today only? Wow, that's cheap. Oh, wait, it won't fit on the bike." Grocery shopping has gone from stopping at the store on the way home every few days and mostly buying junk (or just eating out), to me sitting down every other week, planning out a menu, and buying everything at once when I can borrow my boyfriend's truck. I can still stop at the store if I need a loaf of bread, but I can't get a loaf of bread and a bag of chips and a gallon of ice cream....

Even eating out has gotten cheaper, since I feel very strongly that motorcycles and alcohol don't mix.

I've heard mixed stories about some of the other international guesting services. The people in Pasporta Servo have self-selected twice, first by learning Esperanto, and then by listing themselves in the book. You can have some confidence that they really want the sort of contact that having an international visitor brings.

  • Coupon of the month! $30 off a $30 purchase at ShopNBC.   18 years 39 weeks ago

Why would you rush to a site that you hadn't visited before and search for something to buy from it, just because it has a good coupon offer? If I buy something I wasn't planning to get, $9.99, $5.99, or even $1.99 is too much to pay. They probably just want you on their mailing list (not to mention they're counting on people spending enough to make the discount meaningless to their bottom line).

  • Can You Afford to Follow Your Dreams? Can You Afford NOT to?   18 years 39 weeks ago

The optimal situation is to work in something you're passionate about AND make a healthy profit. Why compromise on one or the other? One half of the equation will get old after a while.

When you're passionate, then you have a chance to become a niche leader because intrinsic motivation will propel you to create the best products/ services. Once you're the niche leader, the monetary rewards should naturally follow.

This is not my original idea. Bloggers such as Steve Pavlina, Yaro Starak, and Seth Godin have presented similar viewpoints. If this interests you, read up on those guys.

  • Baby Carrots: The Frugal Idea That Isn't   18 years 39 weeks ago

Hey, mate, good to know. ACTUAL baby carrots, that is, carrots that are very young, are rarely available in the US. You'd have to really look for them at a farmer's market.

Agree with what Dean Lund is saying - most veggies are better for you unpeeled. That's where all the nutrients are, apparently.

  • Bottled Water, Bottled Hype Part 1   18 years 39 weeks ago

Last guest: Thank you! Half the bottled water sold out there is just tap water that has been filtered (or not even filtered).

Las Vegas Guest: I spend plenty of time in Las Vegas. Yeah, the water needs filtering. But if you are buying bottled water, well, hell - go ahead. Waste your money. You could save hundreds if you just bought a Brita filter or reverse osmosis system, but if you're really proud of your bottled water consumption, by all means, continue throwing money down the drain.

  • How to Take the World's Most Efficient Shower   18 years 39 weeks ago

Sorry for the late post but I just spotted this one.
I used to live in South America and had about 2 min. of hot water. At first I chopped off my long hair to save some time. But I still needed to shave my legs.
I created an extravagant plan where I warmed water on the stove in two stock pots. I would use one to shampoo and condition my hair in the kitchen sink. The other would go into a tub that I placed in the shower and would use that to shave my legs. It also gave my feet a much needed soak.
After all that I finally went to a hardware store and bought a water saving shower head for maybe $10. It uses more pressure and less water so then I was up to 5 min. of hot water and could stop doing my hair in the kitchen sink.

  • My car payments are too much! What should I do?   18 years 39 weeks ago

I would sell the car and buy a used moped. Then take half the money your spending on it now and drop it into an investment account. By the time you are ready to retire, you'd have a nice sum to live off of. I bought a used car and did this and have a nice fat investment account to show for it. It's the car or freedom of early retirement... you choose!

My brother is in the same boat as you. He bought a 4x4 Ranger optioned to the nines because he says "he deserved" it. Now he can barely eat each month because of the insurance and loan payment. I am still mystified why people buy such expensive cars, only to have nothing in 10 years. Then they repeat the process all over again. such a waste.

  • Bottled Water, Bottled Hype Part 1   18 years 39 weeks ago

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=bottled+water+vs+tap&btnG=Google+Se...

Just about every result is in favor of tap, and they're not even covering the negative effects on the environment.

    http://abcnews.go.com/2020/Health/story?id=728070&page=1

    http://www.case.edu/pubaff/univcomm/water.htm

"One of the reasons people choose to drink bottled water instead of tap water is because of the perceived purity of bottled water," the researchers observe, and indeed, 39 samples of bottled water were found to be purer than the tap water. However, 15 samples of bottled water had significantly higher bacteria levels than the tap water. Of these 15, the bacteria counts were more than twice as high as the most contaminated tap water sample and almost 2,000 times higher than the purest tap water sample."

"In our test of bottled waters, Kmart's American Fare -- the cheapest brand -- won. Big-seller Aquafina came in second.

Iceland Spring tied the ordinary tap water for third place. Fifth place went to Poland Spring, and in last place, by far, with almost half the testers saying it tasted bad, was the most expensive water -- the fancy French stuff, Evian."

"Dentists report a dramatic rise in cavities for the first time reversing the trend of decline. One possible reason: bottle water contains no Flouride, which protects teeth; while tap water is usually fluoridated."

Take a blind test of bottled water vs tap. You probably won't notice the difference. I live in northern Virginia and I don't notice any difference between my tap water and Deer Park. Stop wasting your money on bottled water.

And I'm talking to the people who live in the US or Canada. I can understand drinking bottled water if you live in Mexico or China.

  • Baby Carrots: The Frugal Idea That Isn't   18 years 39 weeks ago

That maybe true in the USA. In Australia they sell baby carrots in the supermarkets. They are small unprocessed carrots with the skins intact. The baby carrots are just ordinary carrots with stunted growth. The baby carrots are sold in sealed 1kg plastic packs and are usually half the price of normal carrots.

  • Plan for expensive fuel   18 years 39 weeks ago

Good point on the big sportbikes not being as fuel efficient as an efficient car. And, of course, a vehicle needs to be appropriate to its task.

I suspect in the future we'll see more sharing of vehicles--the guy with the most efficient car doing most of the carpool driving, the guy with the pickup truck transporting firewood for all his neighbors, the guy with the 250cc motorcycle running out to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription so a less-efficent car can stay parked.

That sort of thing used to be just ordinary neighborly behavior. It's just been in the last fifty or sixty years that we got so rich that everyone could fend for himself.

  • Plan for expensive fuel   18 years 39 weeks ago

a 250cc or smaller engine motorcycle or scooter will save plenty of gas. those loud giant 1500cc harleys do not. these big engines turn 50% or more rpm to generate the same horsepower as my 1500cc toyota echo. also these motorcycles are not as aerodynamic as a car. my echo gets better mpg than these 750cc and larger motorcycles. hybrids get yet even higher mpg than do these motorcycles. there is also transporting large items and wood for example for the wood stoves. there is the bad weather in many parts of the country. theres the cold, rain, snow and hail. car pooling in a motorcycle? what about when the roads have even more pot holes because of peak oil? a dirt bike may be practical as well as a mountain bicycle or an suv or van with big tires used for carpooling.

If anyone is into travel size items, make sure you check out all my free stuff posts!
    here

The TTA still says the 3oz rule. I tend to schelp a lot of unneeded stuff with me, so I decided to put everything in my carry and purse that was not my wallet, book or comb in a plastic bag. I figured if they did, at least they would have an easier time going through all my stuff. I think in this situaton playing by the rules will make your traveling a bit nicer. I think they would be more suspicious of a random unmarked fluid in a baggie. Though, I do think there might be a situtation, like a big camping trip where that trick could be useful.

If my plane were leaving in an hour and I hadn't finished packing, I'd be on the phone with the airlines changing my ticket for one to Hawaii, because clearly, I don't want to go where I had planned to.

They have shampoo in Hawaii, right?

  • Plan for expensive fuel   18 years 39 weeks ago

I'm in complete agreement with the insulation comment. One of the reasons we are taking our time finding the right contractor and designer for the new place is so that when it goes up, we will know we've taken care to pay attention to any and all details that will make a difference, including streamlining alternative energy sources into the main system. We also want a large, possible two story section of the house that serves as a breezeway, sun room and indoor garden for the whole year. We want it to be elegant as well, and that's a design challenge. Also grey water integration, etc. Controlling our fuel costs goes a long way towards allowing us to afford things we would otherwise not be able to.

Great topic, Philip, and very timely!
