Boiling also works great. Boil the water, pull the boiling water off the stove. Drop the CD/DVD in for 10 seconds. Pull it out on the sides as carefully as possible. Touch it over with a cloth to let it dry.

I let mine sit for a day because I went out of town, but I can now watch SLC Punk again.

Yes, this does work. I'm not kidding. There are explanations on the web about how this works.

I got many old CDs that are scratched and I think I need to apply Brasso on it.

    Thanks for the tips.

I've saved many CDs by polishing firmly with a micorfiber cloth. Basically this (& all the methods above) work by gently abrading the disc to smooth out scratches, just like sanding scratches out of wood. I haven't tried it yet, but I suspect jeweler's rouge would work wonders on a DVD/CD. Be sure to completely clean the disc when you are done though as you don't want fine plastic particles or abrasives inside your player!

I wonder if some of the (expensive though) display polish that is used to remove scratches from e.g. mobile phone displays would work too. Anyone tried that yet?

Greetings from Germany and thanks for the summary here.

  • Dangerous neighborhoods are safer than commuting   18 years 37 weeks ago

The stats are all very well, but one key piece of data is missing viz. how long is each person spending on the activities described ? My borough in London (UK) has the 2nd lowest crime rate in the entire city and my wife and pre-school child spend pretty much 24 hours a day within 2 miles of our home. It seems to me therefore that their chances of falling prey to violent crime here are virtually nil (indeed as anecdotal evidence, could I point out that last summer, a kid's bike was left propped on our front fence... for five weeks !!!). I spend about 2 1/2 hours a day driving back and forth to work in the city's financial district, so I'm certainly at risk from a traffic accident, but this commute still represents less than 9% of my total week... There is a probably a bigger chance that some nut with a Koran will blow me into a million pieces while I'm sitting at my desk....

  • Why Treasury Bills Are Always a Worthwhile Investment   18 years 37 weeks ago

The issue you're talking about is real.  Bond specialists refer to it as "reinvestment risk":  the risk that, when you go to reinvest the interest payments, you end up having to invest at a lower rate.  (To that, of course, you have to add the "lazy investor risk" and "spendthrift investor risk" that you'll either not get around to investing the money at all, or worse yet, just spend it.  The bond specialists would never do such a thing, so they don't have a name for it.)

If interest rates are higher when you receive your interest payments, you're golden:  reinvest the money at the higher rate.  (Of course, you still have to actually do it.)  Similarly, if your plan is to spend the money (because you're already retired, let's say, and the interest is what you're planning to live on), then getting the interest paid out is just what you want.

If you definitely want to be compounding, and you're concerned that future rates might be lower, there's another option called a zero-coupon bond.  It doesn't pay semi-annual interest payments.  Instead, you buy it at a big discount to face value and then it pays off at face value at maturity.  The result is guaranteed compounding.  I'm not sure you can buy those directly in a Treasury Direct account, although you can definitely get them through a broker.

absolutely not. noone is really THAT important to begin with.

  • Quickly Remove Scratches From CDs and DVDs   18 years 37 weeks ago

On behalf of my Baby-Einstein-Old-MacDonald-obssessed 2-year-old son, I thank you! Assuming at least one of these methods works to get the scratches out. I'm so tempted to try the banana one just for the sheer mess of it...

  • Can Black Google Save You Energy?   18 years 37 weeks ago

There's a great Addon for Firefox called Stylish and a companion site at Userstyles. Just load a different style sheet for the real Google site and there you go... not that this actually saves power ;)

  • Why Treasury Bills Are Always a Worthwhile Investment   18 years 37 weeks ago

"You buy them at close to face value, and then they pay interest twice a year until they mature, at which point you get your last interest payment and your money back."

This seems like it might suggest that the interest gets paid out instead of reinvested. If so, does that mean that you lose out on the compounding of this interest?

  • Quickly Remove Scratches From CDs and DVDs   18 years 37 weeks ago

I can't wait to go try the Brasso. I have three kids... My CDs, and theirs, have paid a dear price. I'm glad I kept all the CDs that I couldn't fix with regular old CD scratch fixer. (I don't think that stsuff has ever worked for me)

    Thanks for the tips.

  • Opting out of the money economy   18 years 37 weeks ago

I've been a big Toffler fan since Future Shock came out. I especially liked his book Powershift that came out in, I think, 1990.

I must admit, though, that I'm pretty dubious about "rewards" programs supplanting cash. Even the huge ones, like frequent flier miles, only replace a small fraction of the money-based transactions.

  • Opting out of the money economy   18 years 37 weeks ago

We all may be opting in to a moneyless economy rather than opting out of it. I've been reading Revolutionary Wealth by Alvin and Heidi Toffler and they suggest that the moneyless economy is the wave of the future, with the nearly cashless economy being a precursor to a moneyless economy. Okay, I use cash but most of my transactions are cashless.

Anyway, I haven't finished the book and am just getting to the moneyless part but one of the ways even us modern/post-modern folks participate in the moneyless economy is through rewards programs. You might participate through a credit card or debit card, or throuigh a store program (your grocery store or Staples or Dick's Sporting Goods for example) when you receive merchandise or travel in exchange for being a loyal customer and spending money of course.

The Tofflers also suggest that global trade is/can be enabled through barter, which also has the possibility of eliminating currency risk.

And real estate exchanges are fairly common and there's a subindustry of sorts in 1031 like-kind exchanges of real estate.

  • Opting out of the money economy   18 years 37 weeks ago

Actually opting out of the money economy is an extreme choice that's probably not right for most people. The tactics used, though--making do, doing without, pooling resources with family, friends, and neighbors, producing things that you (and others) need--also work for people who stay in the money economy.

Economists will point out that producing your own stuff is not as efficient as letting some more-efficient (or lesser-paid) person produce it while you work at a job to earn the money to buy it. Even if you're quite poorly paid, you still have a higher standard of living that way. But the more the money economy has its hooks into you, the more it circumscribes your choices.

  • Opting out of the money economy   18 years 37 weeks ago

It really is great not to have to jump for someone else's agenda, and worth all the sacrifices. Personally, we don't do it by giving up the money economy. We just get creative and particularly focused on alternative revenue streams for passive income.

    Neat post.
