Hi, Sue! Thanks for writing. I am very, very intrigued about the low-dosage aspirins and stopping coffee. You must be so happy to be headache-free. I am happy for you! I tried quitting coffee once (when pregnant) and omigod, the withdrawals. Would love to hear how you did it (i.e., gradual, cold-turkey, etc.). I've cut back but have not had the courage to go all the way to decaf. Good for you!

Agatha, my sympathies. As mentioned above, try to keep to a sleeping pattern. If they increase, call your doctor to get help. You are not alone! Best, M.

I've been battling migraines for years - bad in my teens, bad when pregnant, and very bad in menopause (I'm now 52). In January, I starting taking a low-dose aspirin every day, and I quit drinking coffee.

NO MIGRAINE since then. Four months headache free.

Give it a try - it's cheap (compared to the 3 or 4 Axert I was taking every month at $20 each).

    Good luck!

  • Universal Life Insurance and Whole Life Insurance: A Comparison   15 years 7 weeks ago

this article is false! whole life is risk free tax free and 100% guarranteed!
universla life is a investment grade product, thats why you need a stockbroker lic to offer it. it has some guaranteed elements but overall is NOT risk free tax free and 100%,
therefore its not a modernized simpler version of whole life. if that was the case there would be no whole life anymore,so according to the authors logic whole life is obsolete. which is untrue.
if you want to buy shoes go to a shoe store.
dont buy life insurance from a stockbroker, cereal compony, department store or funeral home, BUY FROM A SPEACIALIST, one that only sells life insurence(there are only 2 types of life insurance whole and term , and they are not complicated)and remember tocheck am best(a rating compony that rates all insurance co) for a a+ superior rating or better. wake up peoples wall street makes money by exploiting main street, buyer beware!!!

  • How to Insure Jewelry for Cheap (or Free!)   15 years 7 weeks ago

While this may be true of some policies (they may vary by company or location), it's not true of all. I know people who have this type of policy and adding an engagement ring wasn't a problem.

Also, this can definitely work for cheaper jewelry, there are a lot of factors that go into it.

Another great way to reduce insurance costs for jewelry is to play around with deductibles. The more you're willing to pay in an emergency, the lower the yearly cost.

  • How to Take Advantage of Free Extended Warranty From Your Credit Card Issuer   15 years 7 weeks ago

Most credit cards also have a benefit call purchase protection. Your card provider will replace the item if it has been lost or stolen within 90 day of purchase. The benefit will also refund you for the item if the store that you purchased the item will not take the item back. Check your card for eligibility. Use your credit card to receive the free extended warranty and purchase protection but try to pay off your credit card balance within one or two month so that you do not incur high interest rate charges.

Hi, guest, and thanks for more info (including the website link). That is so interesting about the cravings being a signal! Fortunately, wine isn't one of my triggers (bad enough to have to give up Doritos and other snacks). I totally agree with you on the sleep patterns. Cannot stress that one, enough. Even on weekends and vacations, sticking with the sleep patterns really helps. Thanks again for writing!

    Hi Jobu,
I personally have the impression we are loosing trust on natural remedies, thinking pharmaceutical companies have much better solutions for everyone, but remember, even aspirins come from natural sources and were just found because people used natural remedies that had no explanation to anyone.

    Hi Marla,

I have just suffered migraine a few days back and as I recall, I have had two already. I usually get once every year. It used to be stress related and now it has been my sleeping pattern.

I also did not realize that chocolate and MSG can both trigger migraine. I really appreciate. Thanks!

um, I don't know what renters or homeowners you're looking at but that is NOT true about jewelry for most policies. Most policies limit jewelry coverage to $1000. You have to know to tell your agent to raise the limit to $2500 or $5000, etc. And to top it off, for $2500 limits, you have a $1500 per item limit and for the $5000 limit in the aggregate, you have a $2500 per item limit. For costume jewelry, this is fine, but for wedding rings and rolexes, etc., you need a separate policy. Regular homeowners and renters is not enough. Every company has slightly different limits.

And btw, the same is true for boat items, car items (built in radar detectors and other add ons like built in DVD players and DVDs stolen from a car), persian rugs, stamps/comic book collections, computer equipment, riding lawn mowers (which have no limits, but are only covered in certain circumstances), money, gold/silver (including coins -- which are paid at face value not at the value of the silver, etc.), etc.

A correction about the chocolate - there's been lots of anecdotal evidence and a couple studies that have shown chocolate is not a trigger, but the craving for chocolate (and other carbs) is a symptom of an impending migraine. I always thought I was weird because I wanted chocolate-chip cookies and sharp cheddar cheese (both supposedly triggers) when I *had* a migraine - turns out that was a symptom! One good site: http://migraine.com/migraine-symptoms/food-cravings/

I do, however, avoid having wine with dinner when it's almost "that time" because I've found a hangover headache will convert to a migraine pretty quickly then. That and getting up at the same time (within an hour) every single day, weekends and vacations included, has cut the number of migraines I get in half.

Paul, thank you so much for writing. I will defininitely try drinking more water. Some days, I am good about it, and some days, I'm not. Talk about good motivation - if I could avoid a migraine just by increasing my water intake, that'd be so wonderful! Thank you for the tip! Mahalo!

    Hi Marla

Although I do not suffer migraines, I once read that migraines and headaches could be linked to de-hydration & that increasing water intake can reduce occurences.

Whether drinking more as the symptoms come on will work to reduce a migraine severity - that is something to try.

I hope that helps readers - it is worth experimenting with a natural remedy as simple as drinking more water :)

    Best wishes

    Paul

  • 5 Frugal Lessons I Learned From Aldi   15 years 7 weeks ago

Aldis is a great way to save money and I have noticed more and more people shopping their recently. They have some items I will go their for, however they are mainly snack items such as beef jerky or snack cakes. Like Michell said, their produce isn't great and typically goes bad a lot faster than normal. However, if you do your research, their are plenty of good quality items you can get their, many the exact same as name brands, that will save you a lot of money.

  • Dealing With and Understanding Migraine Headaches   15 years 7 weeks ago

I'm so glad you mentioned the nausea thing. I've started making myself throw up when I feel nauseous with a headache because, for whatever reason, it makes the migraine go away. I felt weird telling my doctor that. =p A little puking is well worth making my head feel better.

  • Dealing With and Understanding Migraine Headaches   15 years 7 weeks ago

    Ah you poor kid.

After tracking the headaches, as you mentioned, I realized mine are hormone related, monthly or sometimes mid cycle. (Kind of makes you long for change of life.) I go the sumatriptan route (generic Imitrex) as it runs about $30 for 9 tabs. (I have a gem of a pharmacist who tracked this brand down for me.) That lasts me about 4 months. As you said, the real deal is insanely expensive. Another route is generic migraine strength meds (a pain killer combo with caffeine in it). For me this only works early on for lighter migraines.

There are other food triggers, but as you noted, yours are different. If I eat chocolate when I crave it, it's bad, but can tolerate it otherwise in small doses. Other triggers may include, dried beans, wheat, cheese, molds (like in blue cheese), the nightshade family (tomatoes, peppers, etc.), rice, pork, beef, vinegar. It helps to stay superhydrated. It may help to soak in a hot bath, but some find cold works for them.

There was a great book out years ago, believe it was called "The Migraine Book" with tons of helpful info in it. Hope this helps someone out there.

I think the Wise (Bread) move would be to not have a ring so expensive that it needs insurance. It's not very wise to just follow along with the race to the biggest diamond.
