  • Less Expensive Ways to Enjoy San Francisco   17 years 34 weeks ago

Just got back from SF and had a fabulous visit! The weather was perfect! We took a stadium tour of Giants Stadium. For only $10 bucks it was an awesome experience to go behind the scenes in the dugout, clubhouse and more!

    Beautiful and fun stadium!

I'll stick to Japantown! It's clean and easy with kids! That's a major factor with kids who inexplicably like to lie down on concrete for a few minutes. If you like being harrassed for money, like urine stained streets, then by all means, stay downtown. But the idea of this piece is that there really is more to see in the city than the basics of the guidebooks. Japantown is a quick jaunt over the hill to the Marina or North Beach. A quick ride to Golden Gate park. Less congested parking. Good eats. We are talking about a town that's only 7 sqare miles. It's not going to take you too long to get anywhere.

This is absolutely the best time of year to visit San Francisco. Two weeks ago, the city foggy, cold, and filled with tourists. Today, Sept. 6th, San Francisco is sunny, warm, beautiful, and most of the tourists are gone.

May, September, October, are the best months to visit San Francisco, for the weather, less tourists, and cheaper deals.

Your kids would have loved the 50 cent cable car ride up Powell - only a $1.50 for adults.

Aquatic Park, right next to touristy Fisherman's Wharf, has a much safer and accesible beach - no waves.

Japantown is too far from the main attractions, and forces you to drive, taxi or bus, to all the sights. Try one of the downtown business type hotels on weekends or off season.

If you're flying into San Francisco - don't rent a car! San Francisco has great transportation and is a walking city. You obviously save money, but more importantly, a lot of headaches. Trying to navigate a busy city, with one way streets, and steep hills is not a vacation. Parking? Forget about it, there isn't enough for the people who live here, and you'll spend half your day searching for a spot.

You came to San Francisco and didn't eat? Shame on you. Try North Beach for food and Night Life.

Walking across the Golden Gate, not recommended for kids, is still free.

    That's enough for now.

I think the coke-a-day thing will give you kidney stones, as opposed to preventing them. The phosphorus in coke pulls calcium out of your bones (assuming you get enough calcium in your day, this shouldn't contribute overmuch to osteoporosis), and this calcium can collect in your kidneys and cause stones. It would take much more than a coke a day though, but drinking several every day over an extended period would not be good for your bones or your kidneys.

As the main cook in my house, I do a LOT of substituting. Most meals have to be: vegetarian, low-carb, low/no-gluten, dairy free. Yikes! Occasionally I'll make a serving of meat on the side for the carnivore of the house. (Check out my steak method; its great for small or cheaper cuts of meat, since the liquids keep it moist and tender: http://crapimagrownup.wordpress.com/2008/08/09/food-to-impress-steak/ )

I agree with the reading-lots-of-recipes method, too. When I'm trying to cook something I'm unfamiliar with, I look up several recipes online, and my own recipe sort of evolves from what I read. Great post!

  • Women Are Responsible For Inequalities in the Workplace   17 years 34 weeks ago

As far as I can tell Goodson's study is not peer-reviewed (that is, not looked at by other scientists in her field to determine whether it is BS or not). I'd like to see the questionnaires and methods, but would have to buy her book to do that. I'll just have to take Goodson's word for it.

Can those women who have been discriminated against by their female bosses please give examples?

Coke will clean it out of her fur. This is what my grandparents used on Dolly and Lady when they'd go down by the wells.

Crude oil smells like liquid manure, so you want it out of there, fast. Coke worked great!

Another cheap outing is a sunset picnic at Fort Funston. Beautiful sunsets, hang gliders, seashore. You have to eat anyway, so make frugal picnic, have a glass of wine and enjoy. Can't beat it.

I have enjoyed looking around your site. I've only been to Omaha once for my cousin's wedding. I'm originally from Kansas but have found that I can no longer live away from the ocean. I'm a Mainer now.

  • Grocery Shopping for the Cheap and Lazy   17 years 34 weeks ago

I stated that the fatty foods such as canned foods are exactly what I'm trying to get away from. They are, in fact, one of the cheapest ways to eat. A dollar or less per meal seems way within the budget. It's also horrible for your body. Ah well. I think I'll just be eating like I do. There is nothing more that I can do, honestly. I have to face the fact that I am poor, and that I have to eat the foods that the market packages for the poor. $150/mth in food stamps. Meh. LMAO. It's all a crock and a huge joke. Thanks for the time. I'm done. Don't worry about finding out how to budget the 200. It really doesn't matter so much when it all boils down to it. Worrying yourself to death about what you eat and what you "can't" will probably kill you just as fast as well. I have enough problems as it is. I'm sure all of you do too. Who cares what I eat. Besides, we don't even know each other. Why do we care what one another eats.

  • Dealing with Financial Drought: A Recovery Plan   17 years 34 weeks ago

Carol, wow. That's quite a story. I'm so glad things are getting better, and that my post encourged you, too. I love your point about learning things from drought times. It's so true! If we didn't have those hard times, and that includes but isn't limited to financial hard times, we wouldn't be the people we are or become the people we want to become. Thanks for sharing.

Sometimes the preparation is part of cooking.  Soaking beans, for example--if you don't do that, the cooking instructions won't be right.

There are at least three ways to learn this stuff:

    1. By experimenting yourself (with the understanding that you'll sometimes do something that won't work out at all)
    2. By asking a more experienced cook
    3. By studying a lot of recipes.

If it's the sort of thing that suits you, and matches the way you learn, just studying recipes can work surprisingly well.  If you read ten recipes for cooking something, paying attention to the commonalities and the differences, it'll pretty quickly become clear what's an essential part of the process and what's just part of this particular recipe.

Many of the better cookbooks include some discussion of exactly these factors, explaining why this cut of meat ought to be marinated or that vegetable should be steamed rather than boiled.

I solved the "I hate to empty the dishwasher" problem by never filling it. I live alone and wash all dishes by hand now, and let them dry on the counter. (I also don't cook, so, yes, fewer dishes overall.) When I need a coffee mug or a plate, I grab a clean one from the dish drain and viola. Never needs to be put away. Plus, I save all that electricity and hot water.

  • Resisting the impulse beauty buy   17 years 34 weeks ago

I'm not as much of an impulse beauty shopper, as I am a clothes shopper. Although, I don't have any subscriptions to "glossies", I do have catalogs/mailings delivered from J.Crew, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, etc.
    Or, at least I did.
Today I've cancelled all of my email/mailed subscriptions.

Reading this and "Knowing Your Triggers Can Prevent Emotional Spending" spoke to me.

The well-designed catalogs and "New Arrivals" emails are/were my triggers. I would buy clothes/shoes/accessories that I don't need to feel a certain way. While doing so, I was also wasting money that I could have been saving.

Although I could easily blame the power of advertising (I work in the field), I know it's more of an internal thing that I will have to work through; but it's good to know that I'm not alone.

Thank you so much Andrea. I enjoy reading your blog, and have found it to be very motivational.

I used to have at least one Coke a day while pregant for this reason. It also helped combat the fatigue associated with pregnancy.

Sadly, I won't be using it next time around, or i'll be relegated to decaf, since new research warns against ANY caffeine during early pregnancy.
