I think swoopo is a great site. I've used it and had a good experience. I also saved about half price on my ipod. Read about my experience with penny auction sites at my blog: http://bidpenny.blogspot.com/
Bid Penny
Very true! I noticed this the other day when I flipped through a catalog that arrived unrequested in my mail the other day. Suddenly, I was longing for the things on the pages - wouldn't those look good in my home? And I had forgotten about the things I really wanted - things I was willing to save for because I wanted them so much. Advertisements are backed by millions of dollars in research about what triggers people to buy - best to stay away when possible!
Buxr is a great community with some really great deals. There are so many to choose from, this is one of my favorites that was posted recently. http://www.facebook.com/SutterHome?v=app_152297238117374#!/SutterHome?v=wall
A great deal for a good cause and a fun night, who can beat that combination.
There are so many great deals, it is hard to pick just one! This one is good...http://www.buxr.com/deal/ulta-3-50-off-10-10-off-60_62356 Take $3.50 off a $10 purchase at Ulta
I own around 50 condos in the Columbus OH area and currently live in one. I will not plan to buy a "nice" house till the condos are paid off.... A big fancy house before you can afford it is a nightmare. By afford it I mean be able to pay for it without having a paycheck for an extended period of time! Just because you have a big paycheck today don't bank on it tomorrow!
As for me, the best variant would be the combination of dream and day job that gives the opportunity to retire early. It would be a real dream job that brings you satisfaction and money. Of course, in most cases it's just a dream. It's very hard to find a constant high-paying day job that you like. But it would be so great to go to job every morning with pleasure. Besides, if it's really high-paid, you won't even have to apply for payday loans.
I posted that deal long ago and it just makes me laugh. There have been so many great deals on Buxr that it's hard to pick just one but this is one I've shown tons of people.
I've actually been conditioned that payments are NOT acceptable. My parents taught me that both debt and credit cards were to be avoided. My hubby, much to my dismay, still had car payments when we got married. the only payment I am ok with is a house payment. I've never had any debt, not even car loans or student debt. Ok I owed my mom $800 once that I paid off within a year when I briefly didnt make enough money to meet my bills. But thats it. At the moment my mom actually owes me money!
I don't understand how people manage to get into debt I mean, live within your means. How hard is that? If I can do it on 1 income and $900 a month health insurance premiums coming out of our 1 income paycheck then others should be able to do it too.
This is great, Sonja! I've never seen all of these suggestions in one succinct list - and I can especially appreciate that as my energy wanes this time of year. Thank you! I can only add one suggestion: if there's any hint of sun and you can exercise outside at mid-day to get the most powerful sun there is, that's a double-dose of goodness (and it's a lot cheaper than booking a trip to somewhere warm!).
The library also has PS3, PS2, X-Box 360, etc., games. I put them on hold so my fiance can play them before buying them. Sometimes he discovers how horrible a game is before wasting $60 on it. And often, because newer games can take awhile to reach his place in the holding cue, if he discovers he loves a game the price has usually dropped by $20 or $30 from when it was first released. Awesome!
Oh, you're SO right -- I go home to my empty, joyless, lonely life, where all my bills are paid by some anonymous benefactor and the only thing I have to worry about is keeping up with "real" women with "real" jobs an "real" lives and "real" responsibilities -- like being a Mom!
Get over yourselves. I get up at the crack of dawn, work my ass off all day (while the phones are ringing with, "Billy has a runny nose, I can't possibly come in!") and come home to freelance work, volunteer work, clean the house, pay the bills, prepare dinner for my husband, *AND* help our extended family whenever and wherever we can.
Just because you can't fathom a life outside of your children, or at least not one of any modicum of value, doesn't mean that the rest of us aren't just as saddled with real life -- you don't have a market on being a responsible adult just because you've popped out a kid, nor are you any more entitled to have someone else pick the slack (because it's always the parents who are bowing out of work responsibilities).
I'd like to learn more about how to cut my grocery bill besides the usual "make a list and buy generic" advice that personal finance authors usually give. Thanks!

If you must revive an old computer, dump WinDoze, and install Ubuntu.
