  • Homemade Dog Food: Recipe and Cost   15 years 41 weeks ago

As the owner of a HomeMade Dog Treat and Food company I have done a LOT of research on this subject. I think the evidence is overwhelming on why one should NOT feed (most) commercial dog food. But what is the "right" diet for you and your dog? Cooked? Raw? No grains? No veggies? Mixed with a Natural Commercial food? Just like feeding children, there is more than one "right" way. Some kids thrive on a vegitarian diet, others do not. Same with your pets. It's important to gather information and research until you find what is best for you and your dog!

I have had some scold me for not selling a raw diet but you know, we just don't feel comfortable with that. If that is something that works for you and your pet and you have done the research on safe meat handling and you are providing a balanced diet then go for it! We encourage everyone to care enough to prepare or purchase nutricious meals for their pets! Make it yourself or if you don't have time or hate to cook, that's where we come in! Visit us at

The most important thing is to lift the veil off the commercial pet food industry and see it for what it really is. Do the right thing for your pet. Go HomeMade!

  • When Deals Matter   15 years 41 weeks ago

Very true about the size of the expense - my mother used to joke that my grandfather would waste more in gas than the money he saved driving across town to where it was cheaper. Even when I see that the gas is 20 cents cheaper, that's only about $3 difference for me on a full tank anyway. It's mostly psychological.

    To Paul Michael,
Thanks for the tips....Even if they don't work it will be worth a try.

To all the cry babies on here,
Stop your bit$%in', the guy just tried to give you a cheap alternative to expensive auto repairs. If it didn't work for you tell us why or what did work and move on, if it did great, let us know as well. You are out what $15 bucks and a half hour of your time at the most

  • Buying a Home Without the Money   15 years 41 weeks ago

For the record I did eventually (finally) buy a place. It took a long time but we both love our place and from a financial perspective I think I did the right thing. More on the whole experience here.

  • Not free to be poor   15 years 41 weeks ago

What about the many people who work very hard (some working three jobs) and STILL have no health care coverage? And don't say "Because they didn't get an education". Many people I work with have masters degrees and still must work two full time jobs to make ends meet and have no money left over for even dental care.

It seems that you are for the typical right wing health plan: live healthy, pay your fees, die quickly and quietly.

  • Homemade Gluten-Free Trail Mix Bars for About 30 Cents Each   15 years 41 weeks ago

Do you have a base calorie count of how much is in each bar based on the ingredients? I do not think it will be above my caloric intake to have one of these bars as an in between snack. However, I would like to know as a reference. The recipe sounds delicious.

    Thank you

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Relieve Stress? (Chance to win $20!)   15 years 41 weeks ago

I walk to unwind. With a full household, getting out into the fresh air and sunlight and walking daily is a must. I have found that walking allows me to clear my head and without anyone asking "Mom can I?" or "Mom where is?" for an hour I can recharge myself.

  • Why Going to the Gym Is a Waste of Money, Time, and Resources   15 years 41 weeks ago

While workout out is about much more than weight loss -- aerobic and resistance training is good for the heart, bones, muscles, joints, etc. -- your points are spot on. I too often wondered about overweight athletes. Surely even baseball players were getting more exercise and burning more calories than the average guy. So how come we have fat pitchers and designated hitters? The first time I ever saw a clubhouse spread (ridiculous amounts of food), I realized calories consumed might be overtaking calories expended.

Great blog. Lots of great ideas here.

  • Make Money Recycling: Get Paid to Recycle by 15 Websites   15 years 41 weeks ago

That's great stuff. Human behavior is all about incentives and by providing people incentives to recycle, the net benefit is surely positive, even with some payouts to the individuals participating (not to mention the environmental benefit).

I recently highlighted another great green initiative that paid me which took me completely by surprise. Our energy company PECO! Through sifting through their website, I found that I was able to submit for a $75 rebate for a fridge I bought that I didn't even know about. Just because it was Energy Star, I still had the receipt so I just submitted the ticket. Boom - $75 I didn't even plan on! Next, they also pay for old air conditioners and will even pick them up, then pay you $25! They have a few other programs that are pretty neat. Regardless of where you live or who supplies your gas/electric, find their website and check out if they have similar programs!

  • Don't Despair Over Small Retirement Savings   15 years 41 weeks ago

The thing that scares me is the uncertainty of care needed in retirement. Sure, I could fund a retirement on much less than I'm earning now -- if I were healthy. I could live in a cheap studio, eat at home, etc. But what if my health failed? What if I needed help with meals or self-care? In my city, assisted living costs around $35,000/ year and a nursing home costs $70,000+/year. Home care costs are similar or more, depending on how much care you need. And can we all count on our children to care for us?

Long-term care insurance will cover some but not all of those costs. Those costs are huge and scary, and there's not much you can do to reduce them if you need the care. The alternative -- spending your final years in a Medicaid nursing home -- is not an attractive prospect.

That's why I'm saving as much as I can, and why I'm loathe to dip into those funds for my kids' college (although each kid has a 529). You just can't be sure what your health situation will be in retirement.

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Relieve Stress? (Chance to win $20!)   15 years 41 weeks ago

I have 3 main ways to relieve stress, depending on where I am:

At work- Deep breaths and hot tea. Both allow me to slow down and refocus.

At home- Needlepoint. I find the rhythmic nature of it soothing.

In the car- Singing at the top of my lungs to whatever playlists is on. Sure, I may look silly but I won't be stressed! :)

  • How to Sell Your Hair for Cash   15 years 41 weeks ago

PLEASE stop telling people to donate to Locks of Love!!! They sell much of the hair that gets donated to them to other wig companies for a profit and still children have to pay (on a sliding scale, of course... I'm being sarcastic here) for these wigs that they make! Also, they do not make wigs for kids that have lost their hair because of chemo... they mostly make wigs for kids who have a medical condition that affects hair growth- not that this is a bad thing, but if the kids are paying for the wigs in the first place, shouldn't they offer wigs to ANY kid that needs that confidence boost? Locks of Love has a big name that people repeat to others without realizing that this NON-PROFIT company is more interesting in making money than actually helping kids out and if you donate to them, you are most likely providing them with more hair to sell and you have wasted your time.

  • How to Get Laid Off: A Step-By-Step Guide   15 years 41 weeks ago

this is great! i love the ethical versus the avoid lists! sometimes people really do want to be laid off, even in the current economy for reasons many of you might or might not understand, but for those who do, this is a great list to start from. i dont think Paul is suffering from burnout or looking to get laid off himself, he is answering a very genuine question, a question i was very seriously asked recently and had no good reply to!

  • Inside the Shady World of Cheap iTunes Gift Cards   15 years 41 weeks ago

They're cards purchased using stolen credit card information the vast majority of the time. Apple doesn't comment because they don't want people buying these cards on ebay for that very reason. You can legally purchase cards via the Apple store or pretty much any retail location in the United States, and the only reason that someone posts a card over ebay is because it's actually a gift certificate purchased through the iTunes store using fraudulent information (a stolen credit card or credit card info). That's why they don't send physical cards- there isn't one.

Stop trying to pull a fast one on the industry and just buy the real card before you end up getting your account suspended.

  • Buying a Home Without the Money   15 years 41 weeks ago

We bought our house in 1985.....anybody remember those days? Our bank was offering 13% variable rate home loans. A new nuclear power plant was being built in our area which brought in enough big income wage earners to fill every nook and cranny. Rents were crazy and new homes were bought as soon as the contractors could get them built. We were in a mobile home and splitting out the seams with two babies. 25 years later we are still in our home and I wouldn't have changed a thing!

1 - this house has only been for sale twice in the 75 years it has existed. We would never have gotten it if we hadn't jumped fast when everyone else was hesitating. It is part of us, our community, who we are.

2 - as our original loans were being negotiated, the regional savings and loan announced 8.5% rates - unheard of until the week we were pinning down our loan. Not too long after that the nuclear power workers moved on, leaving a housing slump that has never been recovered from in this area.

3 - at 1500 sq feet, the house became extremely small when the kids were in middle and high school (and I had a home based business), but now they have their own homes and it is again the perfect size for us. We plan to be rest of our lives. We can afford it.

4 - we have refinanced it two or three times during the 25 years. Once adding $12,000 for a rural water line (necessity), once because of bad credit card decisions, recently again because of a critical accident that caused a job loss. Our home has been our partner in life, sheltering us in more ways than one.

5 - we have six more years to pay it off. I can't describe what a good feeling that is in this economic downturn, and huge life goal accomplished day by day.

Just thought I would add some historical perspective! Its an investment in your family, the stability of your future and your childrens' future. My children talk alot about "coming home" for things. They are rare in their generation - to still have their childhood home to come back to - our safe place.

  • Defining Success: If You Don't Know What You Want, You Won't Know When You've Gotten It   15 years 41 weeks ago

I can think of a few things I would regret not doing before I died, but it's all simple stuff... Never writing a book, never been kissed, never leaving the country... It's all invalid. Really, this list has just stressed me out more. I have no major goals outside of going to college.. But what for? What would I major in if I have no major career/life goals? And just vaguely enjoy anything?

I've also looked into the My Emissions Exchange site, and it's pretty weird. It says I have no emissions because my apartment is all electric, so I can't really get any credit.
