  • I Am Doing Well Financially. Now What?   15 years 36 weeks ago

Hi David, I agree with the "hiring" if you are an entrepreneur, and also the travel (as I love to travel). But the most important advice is to spend on things and experiences which will give you lasting memories and pleasure. Spend in accord with your own values.
My husband got both our families together for a vacation to celebrate the new millenium. It was expensive, but a memory that will last forever.
    Best regards,

  • How to Get Rid of All Your Crap   15 years 36 weeks ago

I am in the process of decluttering 50+ years of stuff so I can teach overseas. Due to the economy I am finding I am not getting a lot of responses to my ads. So when decluttering - you will have to realize many things are "sunk costs". Also a digital camera can be used to take pictures of many things to sell but also to keep the memory of the item.

  • Save Money on Baby Goodies With Daily Deal Websites   15 years 36 weeks ago

I also love GreenBabyBargains.com. It seems like new sites spring up daily. A few newer ones include Minibargainz.com, OliviaPlace.com, and BumpBargains.com (maternity). Baby Earth's GaGa Deals (http://www.babyearth.com/baby-sale) are also a lot of fun, since the price drops by the minute until the deal is done or the item has sold out.

Some of the baby deal sites have better reputations than others. I've found it helpful to check the site's Facebook page for shopper feedback.

My library has a box labeled "recycled paper" where they put paper that has been printed on one side. Everytime I go to the library, (about 2X/week), I grab a huge stack then put it in my printer upside down to print on the blank side.

  • CitiMortgage Told Me to Default on My Loan   15 years 36 weeks ago

Here's what you should do, start looking around for a home that is big enough, and fair in price to rent. Once you find the right place to rent, move out of your house and put it up for rent. collect rent on the house, use the money collected to buy gold, and hide it. stop paying citi bank for your mortgage, and if they try to foreclose demand that they produce the original note, If they cannot, chances are you could get your house free and clear. This is happening with alot of citibank mortgages.

  • Ask the Readers: Silly Ways to Save (Chance to win $20)   15 years 36 weeks ago

    Hi,
To Ron: I think your serial number game sounds like fun. I have been doing $15 Tuesdays for a couple of years now. On Tuesdays, if I can afford to, I take out $15 from my checking and add it to my savings account. I also take the money I have left over from one pay cycle (usually about $20) and add that to the same savings account that I don't withdrawl from, unless I need a new furance ignitor switch! Those are my 2 biggest and most successful ways of consistantly saving money, however I also do it randomly if I have the funds. I've saved about 3k since I decided to stop living paycheck to paycheck and living within my means. This all started from increasing my deductible on my new car to $1,000 when I didn't even have $100 in savings. That was a nice kick in the pants that I needed.

  • Really Great Uses for Kitty Litter   15 years 36 weeks ago

The ripening of fruit occurs through the absorbtion of the gas ethylene. This gas is given off as fruit ripens, and its presence increases the ripening of nearby fruit that can absorb the gas. In a refrigerator vegetable drawer, ethylene given off by the fruit present, increases the ripening and subsequent going bad of the fruit in the drawer. Since kitty litter is an absorbent, it could reduce the level of ethylene gas in the drawer and thereby exdend the storage life of the fruit in the drawer and markedly reduce spoilage. The kitty litter only has to be placed in each drawer in small paper bags or cloth satchels made from clean rags tied to hold the litter with a string. It is easy for each person to experiment with how much to use depending on the size of the drawer, how much fruit is in it, and when to replace the litter for best results. Since kitty litter is so cheap, it would not be unreasonable to start with a small handfull of litter and change it every two weeks. -Russ vincent, Charleston SC

  • Homemade Dog Food: Recipe and Cost   15 years 36 weeks ago

The idea of home made dog food is good. I buy raw fish, cook it with waste indomie, and you are done. Serve when coo. The indomie waste is from the local factory. My three dogs have been living on this for the past three years, and very healthy. Peter

  • 64 Funny, Inspiring and Stupid Money Quotes From Famous People   15 years 36 weeks ago

    Very good quotes!
My favorite is the one from Will Smith: "Too many people spend money they haven't earned, to buy things they don't want, to impress people they don't like."
And also this one: "It's good to have money and the things that money can buy, but it's good, too, to check up once in a while and make sure that you haven't lost the things that money can't buy." - George Lorimer (too many people lost their friends, their love and they families just because of their work.)

  • How to Get What You Want on Customer Service Calls   15 years 36 weeks ago

I'd add one more step to the list - reward GOOD CS behavior. When your CS Rep shows empathy, and is efficient and friendly in resolving the problem or getting you the service credit...take another minute or two to speak to the manager and verbalize what impressed you with the service. It means the folks who are motivated get the pay raises and have incentives to stay! :)

  • Ask the Readers: Silly Ways to Save (Chance to win $20)   15 years 36 weeks ago

It's kind of hard for me to decide what is "silly," and what is not. I started paying bills online to save postage; then when rates kept rising it seemed more sensible. I saved a relatively small amount of money by sharing a cabin with dh and teenagers on a cruise; then when illness struck in the middle of the night, was very glad we were all together. I started knitting to be able to give better gifts for the same amount of money, and discovered a lifelong hobby.

Silliness seems to be in the eye of the beholder. Right now, it's all good.

  • How to Make Moonshine   15 years 36 weeks ago

    Zorcy,
Alpha amylase???? I've only ever seen this stuff in small packets in homebrew shops here. It seems that its main use is for clearing hazy wines. Around here, the main moonshine is poteen; I suppose it's more of a potato whiskey than a vodka. Made in a pot-still and distilled down to drinking strength, usually about 50% abv. What scotch manufacturers would call "cask strength". As opposed to distilling it to up to the 90% region and then cutting it back with distilled water. The thing with potatoes is that they don't ferment too good on their own; the starch takes a while to break down. This is why a turbo yeast isn't really suitable for poteen. The way we do it is to brew a wash of equal amounts by weight of sugar and grated potatoes; the sugar kick-starts it into fermenting. Most people use a bakers yeast or a beer yeast. It can take 2 or 3 weeks to ferment right out, giving the potatoes time to break down. A turbo yeast would just ferment all the sugar out in a day or 2 without giving the potato starch time to convert.
So.......have I got this right? If I put a few spoonfuls of this alpha amylase in a wash made completely of potatoes, (and a few yeast nutrients thrown in), I won't need to put ordinary white sugar in with it? the amylase will convert all the potato starch in to sugar near enough right away? In which case a turbo yeast will become a viable option? Potatoes are the one thing we have PLENTY of here!! I've seen on the internet that there's a beta amylase as well; what's the difference between the two of them? And how long would it take to convert, say, a 20 gallon wash of potato starch only, (with a potential alcohol of around 15%), into a wash in which the starch has been converted into sugar and ready to go? Sorry if I'm bugging you with too many questions!! And this post vanished into thin air the first time, before I had finished writing it; wouldn't be surprised if it turns up here twice..................

  • Ask the Readers: Silly Ways to Save (Chance to win $20)   15 years 36 weeks ago

I think the silliest ways to "save" money are delaying a cost of something that you NEED now, that you will eventually buy anyway, and that makes you suffer NOW for not having it. For example, I didn't want to shell out ten bucks for a new umbrella when I lost mine. After many times of being rained on, I bought a new one. I didn't save any money in the end and I could have saved myself some discomfort up front.

  • What is "Quantitative Easing" Anyway?   15 years 36 weeks ago

I have been the the Federal Reserve's mall in Oklahoma. It is a worthless asset, and a pretty good example of the the kind of things that get purchased with the "extra" money created by expanding the money supply.

  • Debit Or Credit? Which One Should You Choose At The Checkout?   15 years 36 weeks ago

I work at a Grocery Store.. No, it doesn't. We have no "report" of your pin number.

  • Debit Or Credit? Which One Should You Choose At The Checkout?   15 years 36 weeks ago

My bank does not offer any specials or incentives for me using it as credit. I prefer using debit because it withdraws from my account immediately. When I use it as credit, the hold is there, but it does not show up right away, it takes a couple of days.

  • Ask the Readers: Silly Ways to Save (Chance to win $20)   15 years 36 weeks ago

I've done this in the past and would still consider doing it: When running low on cash for gas, I will go to my son's school and wait in the parking lot for him to get out, sometimes even two hours before the bell, to SAVE the gas I would use in driving the 14 miles to home and back! I'm a SAHM and it works for me. As long as I've got a book and a bottle of ice water (for temps in the 90's---we're in the South) then I'm fine.

  • The Ethics of Free: Is it Wrong to Get Free Stuff?   15 years 36 weeks ago

But we all get free stuff everyday. Think about it...

We buy something from the store and we get it delivered for free. However, free delivery isn't free really because it will cost the store money to pay for staff, transport, fuel, etc but it is dressed up as free to encourage us to buy. It isn't wrong, it is just an incentive that helps both buyers and sellers.

  • Carnival Of Scams - Top 4 fairground cons   15 years 36 weeks ago

You make a valid point about sight picture adjustment. However the gaff is actually in the target paper and the ammo. Paper freys and ammo too small and not round. Often impossible to shoot one shot at a time. Expert law enforcement marksman were only able to completely shoot out the star in only 8 out of 2000 attenpts (law enforcement testing). Always a speck of red on freyed paper edge showing. The average person always seems to lose. Read the book: "Carnival Games: The Perfect Crimes" and learn about how payoffs are the reason these scams continue. Your elected officials make big bucks from carnival owners. $10-$50 Billion cash industry in the U.S. alone, ripe for corruption and organized crime (laundering, etc.) Cops often patrol carnival midways with blinders.

  • Should you skip a mortgage payment to get a bank's attention?   15 years 36 weeks ago

I knew I will start struggling with the mortgage payments so I filed for a loan modification. But after reading different articles, I learned that since I'm current, I won't get approved for the loan modification! And that the fact I'm short selling my house. It's a bad timing, and I don't live in a such great neighborhood, so I think my house won't be sold. Can I stop paying the mortgage because I'm short selling and the modification won't happen? I really need the money for the security deposit and for apartment rent payments. I definitely will move out of the house in December. Just so I can start living in an apartment to handle all the debts, as soon as my student loans start on February 1st. How can I explain to apartment/condo landlord about my house and credit when they do the credit check?
One more thing, my mom and I are the buyers of the house. I know she's not going to stay here for long.
    Please advise. Thanks so much.
