The city neglected to put up signs saying they were going to plow my street. I said that I would not pay for not being psychic. She then told me a tall tale that the city does not have to put up signs for snow removal. I thought that was somewhat suspicious (okay, pure BS!) so I thanked her for her time and opted to fight the ticket it court. I emailed my city councilor asking why there was a by-law saying it was okay to tow/ticket cars for snow removal without first posting signs. Apparently this was NOT the law. The mediator lied to me. Then I wrote an email to a local newspaper reporter who chronicled my lack of pyschicness in an article and alas, a few days later, the ticket was canceled and I received an apology from the head of by law enforcement for the error. I still think the mediators lie and I doubt that mediator got in any trouble for her misinformation. As a result, my trust level with the city is zero!
I don't know about you but where we live the teachers are making 6 figure salaries (with bonuses..not to mention time off for the vacations and tenure even if they shouldn't BE teachers) and the latest news is the LIRR people are too!
Starting teachers have to live within their means to survive the summer vacation, I suppose that's good training for later on when they ARE making the high pay.
Although the last comment was over 6 months ago, I feel this is still relevant. I had a ring I wanted to sell, but first looked online to find the equation (converting dwt to troy ounce to find the accurate price considering the day's gold price). Most people forget the fact that jewelry stores GREATLY inflate prices. If you actually do the equation, the amount you get is far smaller than the original price paid for the jewelry. There's a basic equation, and then if your gold is impure (aka less than 24k) then there's more to the equation.
I knew the dwt for my wedding ring, so I used that as an example in the equation since the ring I was selling physically felt lighter than my wedding ring. At least then I'd have an approximate idea, even though I knew I'd get less for the sale ring. I took the ring I was selling to Mister Money and they actually paid me MORE than the amount I estimated based on the equation results. I got $90 for ONE RING. It was 10k yellow gold and was a rather thin band.
I took a gander at their jewelry display and noticed that most of the gold rings they were selling were only priced at around $150...so they only profit around $40. Needless to say, I'm happy with the results.
Moral of my comment: go online & find the equation. Do the math yourself & you'll see what your gold is really worth (approximately). Too many people expect to get 50%+ back from the original purchase. In that case, they really don't understand the jewelry industry.

Oh Ya...never had one cold or the flu. Did not get a flu shot(either type). I was unemployed and spent almost every day at home and since colds and flu are caught from others who catch them from animals(bird/swine/etc.) not from low temps, my lack of illness is not surprising. Plan on doing again next year. Global warming is an outdated label as the true name to describe what we are doing to the planet is Global climate change. Some people seem to have trouble understanding that but eventually natural selection will take over. Those that prepare for it will survive and those that don't....well.......weaker members of a species that don't adapt go extinct.
Here's a challenge for next year. I live in a 3 bedroom 1200 sq ft ranch in wisconsin. I use indoor window film and tape to close off my living room, one bedroom, the hallway to the bedrooms(use it like a curtain to reduce air flow) and the forced air heat registers in those rooms and the other 2 bedrooms. Sealing the registers didn't really matter much because I NEVER TURNED ON MY LP FURNACE LAST WINTER because the thermometer doesn't go down low enough. I live in the kitchen and dining room. I use a heating pad to preheat my bed before going to bed. I have an electric heater on a timer to heat my bathroom so that it is warm when I need to use it in the morning. I have another elec heater for the kitchen/dining room and while I am in there I wear several layers of clothes, a hoody and cheap cloth gloves. I have a thermometer that rings when it gets near freezing but my water pipes only got into the upper 30's(I have my own well). It has been as cold as 34 degrees in my bedroom in the morning and it is usually in the lower 50's where I spend most of my time. My avg monthly elec bill(includes heating) was about $70 for Dec/Jan/Feb. Elec goes down some because the fridge doesn't work as hard..grin...and I've switched all my lights over to CF's.
Costco will not allow your friend to purchase items at their store unless they are members (this is the case at the Costco I shop at). If I bring a friend, I have to do the purchasing and my friend has to repay me rather than making her purchases directly.

After spending lots of money on "regular" groceries for years, my son (who has a severe form of Crohn's disease) and I make all our own breads (hand kneading only) preserves- whatever we can make, we do it. Even peanut butter. That's a real eye opener compared to store bought!
But too, we do our best to only buy organic (it's a financial struggle) and we remove any and all products in plastic and transfer them to glass jars. Trying to eat healthier is actually more fun and a lot easier than people think. The television tells us "you don't have time! Open the frozen dinner!" Well, we all have the time to spend a day off or afternoon to cook meals we can freeze or bake breads...it's really fun and so rewarding and satisfying.
Controlling what actually goes into your bodies (food wise) is not difficult. It's fun, rewarding, immensely satisfying and really brings families together; there's a definite pride and happiness sitting down to eat something a family member has put together from scratch. You really do feel better to!

I don't consider a 50K salary to be "low" but that's probably because I've spent much of my life dwelling in small cities where the cost of living is very cheap. I will pursuing a career in teaching and naturally, I'm a very frugal person. Saving money is something that everyone should do whenever they can, little by little it all adds up. Our household currently has a "wishlist" fund and a "rainy day" fund. That way we can still have the things we want but can also be prepared when life throws odd curveballs. Great food for thought. At one point, both were with AT&T and so the difference in coverage was very obvious--the prepaid AT&T phone consistently dropped and MISSED calls (they would go straight to voicemail even though the other phone had reception), which we haven't experienced with contract AT&T.
We have made some choices that have really helped us, like:
*selling at short sale and moving closer to the job, instead of holding on to the big "dream" house that became a financial nightmare for us
*following a customized and flexible financial plan that has helped us to forecast spending and to save (when we've followed it, which we usually do).
