  • How to Make Moonshine   16 years 2 weeks ago

    Zorcy,
Do you add the lemon juice to the syrup/infusion BEFORE you add it to your alcohol, or do you add the syrup stuff to your alcohol and then add a bit of lemon juice to it? Or does it make any difference? And the first batch of syrup doesn't have any added sugar, just alcohol and fruit, is that right? What if I was using something like, say, pineapples or sloes, that have an acidic sharp taste to them to begin with? Should I add some sugar to the first batch before covering them with alcohol?

  • AD&D Insurance: No Good, No Bad, Just Ugly   16 years 2 weeks ago

Accidents are the leading cause of death for people between the ages of 1 and 41. Adults under 41 typically have a lot of expenses (mortgage, car payments, child care, college funds) that they don't anticipate having at the end of their life. Since life insurance is much more expensive than AD&D, it makes sense have life insurance coverage and then supplement it with AD&D to keep your family financially prepared if you do die from an accident, and leave behind all the expenses you planned to pay off before your death.

Wonderful article. The one piece that I would add is that be prepared financially in case you do get a ticket! This means make an emergency fund and make sure it's funded enough! I recently wrote about how large your emergency fund should be, including factors that will affect the size of your fund.

You forgot to mention to not drive a sports car if you're young, especially late at night. It's really quite annoying to keep getting pulled over and their excuse is always to check if you've been drinking. Driving at 2am, he must be leaving a bar right? The other one is to see if you stole the car. It's the same conversation every single time... "Is this your car? Have you had anything to drink?... follow my finger with your eyes" I understand that times are tough and you have to do what you have to do to get your funding, but why not try fixing the root of the problem before going after everyone else.

  • Cheap Hotel Rates with Hotwire   16 years 2 weeks ago

    even better, go to betterbidding.com

basically, people post what hotels they have gotten when using a certain listing.... so that by the area, star rating, and what icons it shows for things like pools and laundry, you already know in advance which hotel you are almost always going to be getting for that listing.

less surprises, and knowing the hotel lets you verify that its both what you want, and the best deal.

    Organic =/ Healthy.

If the organic really does taste better, or if it's a variety of food otherwise unavailable, then sure spend the extra money. But just because it's "organic" doesn't automatically mean it's better for you, the environment, or the local farmers.

That being said, I'm a huge fan of bulk. It's often cheaper to order it online, though. We save a ton of money by ordering our flours, rice, and oatmeal online in 50lb bags.

  • How to Deal With Collection Agencies   16 years 2 weeks ago

I am a collection agent. Most of these things are not going to help you. You can not simply just say you can only pay $X amount and get it. There are certain criteria we have to follow. We can only go so low on a payment. By the way, we never hang up on you either! Also keep in mind, we can not send everything in writing...

  • You're Going to Get a Traffic Ticket Soon   16 years 2 weeks ago

One rule that I know has saved me a lot of problems is "the 3-second rule", and I actually prefer to use "the 5 or 6 second rule"; i.e., maintain a safe distance from the car in front of you. You need to allow plenty of space in case the car ahead brakes suddenly, which happens a LOT. I was so glad I'd made this a habit when a car ahead of me came to a sudden stop on an interstate when we had all been traveling at 65 mph. I did not hit the car ahead of me; 6 or 7 cars behind me did. So yes, the rear of my car was damaged, but I was the only one who was not at fault, and insurance covered repairs with no hike in my rates. I also go slower than the posted speed in areas where there are crosswalks. State law requires vehicles to stop for pedestrians, and yet there are places with crosswalks where the posted speed is 40 mph! It's nuts. These are not cases related to frivolous ticketing, but they are serious safety issues, and good driving habits have definitely saved me money and heartache. Four years later, one of the drivers in that accident I described is suing another, claiming the rear-end collision caused them to hit the car in front. I'm so glad I'm not in that boat.

  • You're Going to Get a Traffic Ticket Soon   16 years 2 weeks ago

Yup, been driving 35 years and got my first ticket last week. 2 miles per hour over the posted 45 mile an hour speed limit. Because of gas prices I've been trying to avoid both the gas and the brake pedals, and I was coasting down a short hill when I got caught. There were THREE police cruisers at the bottom of the hill and another one had pulled someone over just ahead of me. Can you say "speed trap?" Nothing better to do I guess and the city needs money.

    Branflake
You can age it with wood, but I would infuse it with fruit or herbs. For aging, hard woods will work, but not give the flavour you are used to. You will need White America Oak for the traditional taste. Some specialty flavours use French Oak. Don't forget to burn it a bit, the charred wood takes out some impurities.
To infuse, pick a local fruit, like plumbs or peaches. Take out the core or pit. Cut into slices and freeze. Thaw it back our, put in a jar, cover with clear liquor. Shake every day for 2-14 days. Soft fruit is quicker then woody fruit. Strawberries will take 2 days, apples and pears 2 weeks. drain off the liquor and store. Tap the fruit down loosely. Cover it with sugar and let it sit till the sugar dissolves. Pull that off and save it in a separate jar. Repeat this until the sugar does not dissolve. The first batch of syrup should be used first, it's the strongest. Then you add the others to taste to your alcohol. squeeze some lemon in to preserve the colour. You can filter through cloth, then a big wad of cotton. If it is too thick, warm it up in water. That is how you infuse with fruit. You will find large Mason jars with fruit floating in it. You leave the fruit in, with some type of acid to preserve the colours. There is lemon juice or fruit preservatives to add, just for looks. You can drink it with the fruit still there, but it wont have the sweetness to it.

Don't forget: flashing headlights to warn drivers of a speed trap is generally a ticket-worthy offense, as well.

  • The vicious Home Rental Scam – don’t get conned.   16 years 2 weeks ago

Here is the response I got after inquiring about a "too good to be true" house on Craigslist. The next day the listing was pulled.

    Hello,

Thanks for the email. Yes the House is still available and will only be given out to the right person that will take very good care of the place and the facilities. The house has a lot of facilities like laundry facilities, air condition, internet and telephone access, Dishwasher, Dryer, Microwave, Oven, Refrigerator, Stove/Gas, Dining Features: Eat-in Kitchen, Living/Dining Room, and other necessary facilities. I have really decided to give out the house as a result of my transfer to West Africa ( Nigeria )

I will be giving out the house for $600 with a security deposit of $600. I need to inform you as well that money is not the major reason why I am renting it out but want someone who can take care of it as if he/she owns it. So let me know as soon as possible if you can take good care of it, so that we can discuss the rent further. Pets are allowed. Here is the address of the (9113 Crystalwood Lane Richmond , VA 23294 )

We initially wanted to sale the house but we changed our minds and decided to rent it out because the economy is bad and it has also affected the housing market. We might decide to sale in the future but for now we are just renting it out .If you are interested you can go by and view it but you will not be able to go inside cause the keys are here with me and my wife in Nigeria . Hope to hear from you soon.

  • Do You Practice Math When You Leave a Tip?   16 years 2 weeks ago

I use "easy 20" (move the decimal to the left, then double), with a few twists:

I tip on the pre-tax amount; I don't think the tip should be based how much local governments choose to gouge.
20% is not my cap. Particularly for good service, an extra few dollars won't break me.
I use checksum tipping to guard against fraud: Add the digits to the left of the decimal and take the ones digit of that sum. Make the final digit to the right of the decimal equal the that digit derived from the dollars sum. For example: 35.61 (3+5=8) becomes 35.68. 78.12 (7+8=15) becomes 78.15. This goes out the window with a server I know and trust.

  • Top 6 Reasons Why Using Cash-Only Rocks   16 years 2 weeks ago

This is total BS. Credit Card is EXACTLY the same as cash - it's money. Giving up the convenience of using a credit card just because you can't control yourself makes no sense.

The fact that you have a CC in your pocket and that the bank will give you credit, does not mean you can afford what you want to buy. Once you let that sink in, a CC is just the like cash, it only takes less space in your wallet and is MUCH more convenient.

You just need to change the way you think about a CC and treat it as cash. We are adults, we don't need the visual queue of not seeing the bills in our wallet to know that we can't afford to buy something.

Just because the bank will give you credit does not mean you have to use it! You can do a lot of things that you don't do, like steer your car to the pavement and run over a hot dog stand, but you don't. Learn to control yourself :)

A CC is even better in that way you can track what you buy since you get a monthly statement with all your transactions.

So now that you have learned how to save, you can go back and use a CC again.

    Good luck!
