@Abby - Thanks! I think if we all started using "it's not deprivation - it's prioritization" as a mantra, we could all stand to be a little bit happier, and possibly a little richer as well.
The importance and benefits of maintaining a good credit and FICO score is extremely important. Better credit score enhance your credit ranking and would help to get good financial deals. Thanks fr this insightful post.
Good list. Prior to my layoff, my boss started slowly responding to my email or not responding at all. She decided that I needed to be "retrained" on the accounting software I'd worked on for years, which meant another staff member would watch me input the numbers. She gave me projects which were exercises in futility and eventually quit giving me any projects. My evaluation was not bad but not the high marks I was used to and she added stuff in there that she'd never brought to my attention before. She became completely indifferent when I updated her on current projects. She'd say hello but made it clear she had little time for me other than that. She'd go to lunch with her other staff and not invite me or take other staff out to eat on their birthdays and conveniently forget mine. I'm not one to be real social at work and had nothing in common with these folks. At some places this is okay, but in this environment it hurt you, as they cut big time that year and it was mostly those who weren't her good buddies...felt like the movie Mean Girls. I didnt immediately start looking for another job because I liked several of the other managers there but they turned out to be utterly powerless and this glorified admin type who was my boss was super powerful. I hate politics but it still rules supreme in most places. Fortunately, every now and again bad behavior comes back to haunt folks, as this boss was run out months later for fraud by her former good buddies, who apparently couldn't stand her either...
Blogging can be a great way to build a second income, be a good creative outlet and it doesn't have to be hard. My advice to those who want to blog and know they're in it for the long haul? Start out on Wordpress.org self hosted platform as it's the best, is the most customizable, and you'll be switching to it later on anyway if you stick to it. How much does it cost? A domain name ($10) and 1 year of hosting = $60 or so. $5-7 a month is a worthwhile investment - you'll be glad you did.
Thanks for the plug for my logo design side-business/blog WC!
Larger party=bigger bill. Bigger bill=less tip (since people get sticker shock over the price of food.) I'm not a fan of gratuities either, but I understand why they are there; some people think it's perfectly acceptable to give a waiter $2 on a $400 bill.
When you have two or three smaller parties over the course of ten hours that do that, it tends to even out. When you have two or three larger parties who all do that, well, you're not even breaking even for the night, since you have to tipout.
You can always cross them out/subtract them/whatever.
A bad credit score can affect so many things that people just don't realize it. It can cost you more for insurance and in some instances even cost you a job. Make sure to stay on top of your credit score and don't pay too much to monitor your credit score.
It may be a really wonderful and substantial book. Your review has made me more interested on this kind of learning stuffs. I'm sure that it'll give a lot of sense on the subject of financial investments. The overview of its contents are just amazingly relative.
Great article as always...
Though insurance is an absolute need, I think it is just proper to invest on a more reliable plan that will provide an extensive benefits and financial support to our families. Spending less doesn't t always satisfy a justifiable means. AD&D insurance is a total expense with a little of returns I may say. If you want to have financial security then why gamble with a lesser chance, if there are more precise deals anyway. I agree that its just like a lottery game where the chance at stake are a lot on the side of impossibility.
Life insurance of both kinds, Key man and Buy-sell funding are very relative in covering up the possible loss in business acquisition. I certainly agree that key personnel of business entities are their utmost asset that will create a diminishing effect as they die that is why it is very essential to have at least a financial support that will carry on with their loss.
Articles like this are eyeopeners that creates a very substantial thinking for further business assessment. Great job, Nora!
What's the deal with automatically adding 18-20% for parties of 6 or more? Just recently I had some of the worst service I've ever experienced when out with 6 of my friends. Without exaggeration, it took 20 minutes between sitting down and getting our drinks. Things continued to be very slow all night, with the server routinely passing right by our table without even glancing at us, leaving our drinks empty as we ate. Now, generally I'll leave 20% rounded to the nearest whole dollar without even thinking, sometimes more. But imagine my surprise when they demanded that I tip 20% for terrible service just because there were 2 more people sitting at a table. Ironically, she screwed herself out of a bigger tip because we would have ordered several more rounds of drinks in the same amount of time if she had bothered to bring them.
Health insurance may sound very advantageous at first of course as you hear all those good words, benefits, etch... But I think they are all the same, companies gain more than the insured person I guess, it's practically a business for them so they benefit more before the plan holder. One good thing is that we are having the means for our needs in the future time of uncertainties.
Having to choose the best that suits your foremost needs is not that easy, thorough study of various company and their legitimate capabilities on delivering quality service is a must process in order to get a substantial plan that will benefit you the most.
Insurance are the best protection we could avail for our future needs and demands that we might be thinking to be liable out of our capabilities then. Taking the risk is always at the front step of everything. Identification of our priorities and knowing our financial capabilities are the best practical way of acquiring the most beneficial insurance for us.
It's essential to be wise enough because no one definitely wants to invest on something of less returns and importance. Essential living that is. We risk on something that is in great value for us. Making our money worth is the term I believe.
Wow, you said that beautifully and congrats on living your dream! This article is very inspiring and has a lot of truth behind it. When you set a goal, one that really moves you, you will stop at nothing to achieve it and I beleive that. I admit I fall into overspending on frivolous items all the time, but in the end only you can make yourself happy. This is great advice I'll keep reinforcing to myself. "It's not deprivation; it's prioritization." What would happen if we all started thinking that way? Can you imagine? :)
Loved this article. I applaud you for showing your child how beneficial healthy eating is early on in life. I recently started trying to the best of my ability to live an organic and vegan lifestyle. It gives me cringes to know that when I eat colorful, healthy fruits and veggies, they are crawling with pesticides. I feel much better when I eat organic foods, really. Also, recipes are great and inexpensive, not to mention organic is better for you and the environment!
The Supreme Court ruled several years ago that if it is in the trash, it is in the public domain and any one can have at it. Even the police, without a warrant
"Take care of your stuff." This was a great idea that I feel as if I should send to my friend Lydia. She always spends a fortune on her things that she buys and they are runied in less than 6 months. She always buys the most expensive things and then ruins them because she never takes care of them. It is not like she has all this money to spend, she is spending most of her loan money!!! For example, she buys a 400 dollar Coach purse last year and within the first 4 months it was black and nasty and she didnt care! She just bought a new one after 4 months that was almost the same so I (being the cheap one) asked her for it! I cleaned it and when she saw it she couldnt believe it! I always try and tell her to keep care of her stuff!!
I am forwarding her this email! She needs some of this advice about how to live cheaply! These are great ideas and made me think so much of her and about changing my life! Thanks Philip!
I just want to say that I had a similar experience as blueeyedcat with the iPod. My credit card is a Mastercard through Bank of America. When my HP laptop died (apparently as a result of a hardware failure that is well known by HP and class-action lawyers everywhere but my model didn't fall under any recall) I contacted BoA to see if it fell under the extended warranty to see what assistance I could get. Their benefits program is serviced through another company. I spoke to at least 5 people (and sent a letter to customer service VP at BoA) at both companies and they all said that my card did not have that benefit even though the paperwork I received in the mail with the card, said that I did. So, I'd say that those "extra benefits" are not something to expect, but just be happy if you can take advantage of them. What they send you in the mail is generic for everyone who receives the card but most likely if you come calling for the benefit they're not likely to follow through. I hate that our society seems so litigious nowadays, but if I had loads of money to waste, I'd hire a lawyer and try to sue them either for breach of contract or for misrepresentation. I'm fairly certain I'd have a case.
The problem with trying to increase server wages in America to a decent livable level (such as that in Australia) is that people here already complain about paying however much they're paying, regardless of the fact that no one is forcing them to eat there (but to up the prices so the restaurant could afford to pay servers say $12/hr would drive all the food prices way up)
All in all, 20% is the average and a reasonable amount. More is nice, less is mean, because no matter what you do the same amount of work and sometimes you make enough and sometimes you don't.
P.S. Cash tips are ALWAYS better than credit because servers sometimes have to wait up to 2 weeks to receive their credit tips, even though they still have to tip out bussers and bartenders and expos out of their own pocket. So if you get all credit and no cash, you could potentially be paying to go to work, at least in the short run.

We double the tax and round up to the nearest dollar.

You don't need to pay a cent to know your score; use creditkarma.com. Yes, the name sounds fishy, but it's legit. You can check them out at the BBB.

This is awesome! Have you seen it Philip?
What was their main purpose for doing this? I understand it was for security purposes but don't you think people will still be able to copy it?
I like the look better! :)
