I hadn't remembered the no-label thing until you brought it up. I was a kid then but I do remember playing the game, hoping for the best!. Thanks for bringing up that forgotten piece of trivia!

WOW! It's great that I am not the only one who has become a devoted Aldi shopper! Again, there are some hit and miss things and I am glad to note that I am not the only one at a produce disadvantage. Overall, there are things I simply won't buy anywhere else. I also have noticed a whole lot more shopping carts being steered through the aisles even on a mid-week workday. It seems that many people trying to cut costs have discovered the benefits of Aldi and I no longer think there is a blatant stigma attached to discount grocery shopping as there was when only my Grandma shopped there.

I'm spending my retirement money on gasoline. When I run out, I'll stay home.

Interesting that so many people have trouble with their produce. Our Aldi has excellent produce most of the time, typically at a 1/3 to 1/2 discount off of the local grocery store. Every once in a while, especially with berries, it will go bad quickly, but more often than not even berries last for over a week. We've been shopping at our local Aldi for almost 2 years and I've only ever seen bad produce on the shelf once - never mold and flies!

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Save Money When Dining Out?   14 years 1 week ago

Avoid eating out on a regular basis, so when we do go out, it is a special occasion and we are not as concerned about every penny spent. Also, we are both water drinkers. Last year we had 3 meals at restaurants, excluding travel, and this year we have yet to dine out.

  • 11 Ways to Have a Clean Place Without Cleaning   14 years 1 week ago

Great tips! I can attest to the difference that not wearing shoes at all inside the house makes. I am still surprised at how many people are still not doing this. It actually is a wonderful way of symbolically putting the cares of the world behind one's self as well. One additional advantage is that hardwood floors' finish lasts much longer, thereby saving money on refinishing. One tip I would recommend is to split up floors of the house into different cleaning days. For example, I vacuum the first floor every two weeks and dust probably once a month or two since we don't have much dust on the first floor. On the alternate week, I dust and vacuum the second floor. This works out really well as it is not so overwhelming. I do a thorough one-hour cleaning of our master bath every two weeks as well. That takes an hour. I keep a calendar to log when I clean and this is key. My house is immaculate and I feel that even though I clean less frequently, when I do clean, I am able to take my time to be extremely thorough and that makes all the difference.

  • 8 Things to Consider Before Switching to an Online-Only Bank   14 years 1 week ago

You can look online at the minimum balance requirements and fee schedules for the different accounts offered through several banks. You need to determine if you can afford a minimum balance requirement and decide how much that is. There are several advantages for being able to maintain a higher minimum balance, you may be able to avoid monthly banking fees, earn higher interest rates and avoid fees for money orders and travelers’ checks. However, if you choose an amount that is too high, you will be charged fees for being under the limit.

  • How to Avoid New Carry-on Luggage Charges   14 years 1 week ago

Shame about international travellers who need more than a small backpack for 6 weeks' travel. We will be ultra careful about who we travel with, choosing only those with low or no baggage fees, and travelling by train where air travel is not worth the exorbitant and stupidly rude charges now being imposed.

But once we can't avoid these fees, we will be re-thinking the US as a preferred travel destination - which is a shame, because we usually spend 4-6 weeks there, spending our (not inconsiderable) international dollars in multiple states. We'll simply take our Aussie dollars elsewhere...

We skip desserts and drinks, and sometimes even split a meal. Or alternatively, we will sometimes order an appetizer and one meal and share (as some places have extra-tasty appetizers!). I always take home leftovers, as often that will feed us for one or two more meals.

Oh, I like Wisebread on Facebook (under the name Fourth Date).

Before I decided to get healthy, I used to like going to buffets, especially the lunch buffets at Indian restaurants. Really good value for the money.

You are so wise. I loved seeing the different ways to AVOID spending on accomodations. I think that is where some people throw away their hard-earned cash. Another great tip you provided was traveling S.L.O.W.L.Y. - this makes a huge difference. I try to avoid flying as well and it has been quite helpful. :) Thanks for this wonderful post. I enjoyed reading every word.

  • How to Survive (and Thrive!) in a Job You Hate   14 years 2 weeks ago

Ive been a teacher for 6 years. I can't say I ever loved it but I did try to instill positive values in my kids and I tried my best to care for them as best I could. Yet, I never liked my job even though I got the opportunity to be a assistant coach, yearbooks designer, camp director as well as literature teacher. I always felt like I was going through the motions but I don't know what else I'd like to do with my life. Am I just supposed to stay put? (Btw, Even thought I go through the motions I will not let that interfere with my students and my responsibility to teach them.) Sbould I just suck it up? Any advice?

The best way to save money when dining out is to NOT go out after you've skipped a meal or two. Drink lots of water before you go, and you will be sure to spend less!
