I shop at Aldi's when I can. I have found their produce to be very good, but that may be a regional thing. I know they manipulate their milk price up and down. Most things on their store brand are very good, but their toasted oat cereal tasted like cardboard.

  • How About a Price List at the Hospital or Doctor’s Office?   14 years 2 weeks ago

The cost of this type of pre-natal care is one of the biggest expenses hospitals encounter. It is also a growing problem (more and more pre-natal care, sometimes costing upwards of $500,000 per baby). I would imagine if just 20% of the babies born required even just some specialized care like this it would be unsustainable. In this example I don't think it's really an issue that one country is doing a better job than another. Canada has plenty of complaints against it's healthcare. The problem seems to be that we have too many people requiring high cost medical services in every country - and that's not sustainable. If each and every person with cancer, heart disease, diabetes, premature birth, auto accidents, skiing accidents, blindness, etc. is supposed to be "entitled to" the best care - where will the $250,000 - $1,000,000 per person come from? The average heart attack costs about $150,000 or more. Most people pay about $12,000 or less for their health insurance each year. If they do this for 10 years it's only $120,000. If they do it for 20 years, it's only $240,000 invested. How is this going to be sustainable when they are using up those funds each year?

I try to save money when I dine out by: 1) ordering water instead of soda or juice, which also helps limit calories; 2) going during happy hour if I feel like having a drink; 3) checking in on Foursquare for any free appetizer deals; and 4) checking Restaurant.com to see if they offer any certificates for a certain place.

I could also check Scoutmob and Yelp but it never occurs to me at that time and place. :P

We go to local Mom and pop type restaurants where the food is really fresh and inexpensive. Our favorite is a Pho restaurant. A large bowl of vegetarian Pho plus a plate of fresh cilantro, lime, jalepenos and bean sprouts is only $7.50. We share the order and it is more than enough to fill us both us.

I absolutely love Aldi! I love their stir-fry kits as well as their "Fit & Active" line of products.

I agree with you about the produce - buy it only if you plan on using it within a day or two.

I've read in several places now about the tendency toward bad produce at Aldi stores all over. I personally haven't seen any horrible offerings at my store (a new location, less than a year old), but nothing stellar either. Also, produce is one area of the store in which the prices are not necessarily comparable to my regular, somewhat upscale, store.

About that double guarantee - if I don't like something, why would I want it replaced, presumably with the same thing? I think I'd be better off just getting the $ back and moving on, don't you?

I remember shopping at Aldi as a kid in Chicago. They had canned food with no labels. You just picked them from the palette with the sign and hoped it was what you wanted. Great Stuff. They own Trader Joe's as well which has followed the same "House Brand" model to great success. I just wish they were in Richmond.

We drink tap water instead of ordering drinks.

I agree Carson. I too would rather go to a restaurant less frequently but when I do I like to enjoy myself and not see it as a money saving 'chore'. I like to order what I want, not necessarily the cheapest dish and like you if the service is good I like to leave a good tip. I like to go to a good family restaurant and try to stay away from the major chains.

    11. Have you seen a job posting for your company that matches your job description?

Yeesss, they want me to train the guy too. I will to a point, but mostly everything wrong lol.

I'm not going to say who I work for or what I do because of well. duh.

No the work I do is extremely complex, very tedious, and you have to have a very keen eye on your work (to a point where microscopes are often used). that along with the fact that I alone bring in 90% of production and profit to my company and that there are VERY FEW people in the world who understand my work.

So I say let em fire me it'll funny to watch them go under

    On a side note:

I've been doing this job about six years now used to love it, but now I wouldn't mind something less stressful. Got the grey hairs to prove it...and i'm only in my 20's :o (picture how Obamas hair looks on a young guy)...hell I wouldn't even mind delivering pizzas :P)

I have to say that the produce at our Aldi's is extremely good. I often wonder if its local even. But we have lived in other states that it was awful.

  • 6 Awesome Reasons to Shop at Aldi   14 years 2 weeks ago

It must be your Aldi's that has bad produce. Neither of our two Aldi's have bad produce but when I lived in Indiana I never bought the produce. It was bad in the store and made the store stink. It was a turnoff for me and so I never shopped at an Aldi's until I moved to my present location.

  • 18 Ways to Make Old Things Seem New   14 years 2 weeks ago

Since it is spring, my obsession right now is gardening. I have found a million things in the house to use as planters (dishes, ceramics from high school, boxes from clementines, kids old easter baskets). Its been fun trying to find new things. Pinterest is a great way to find inspiration....even old rain boots and shoes can be used as planters. Love it.

I have tried all the tricks out there like eating early, happy hour, splitting meals and restaurant.com coupons.......but what I really enjoy is choosing quality over quantity. I eat out maybe once a month, so I enjoy it and have what I want. That's kinda the point of eating out to me. If I wanted to eat cheaply, I would rather stay home.

  • How Your Last Name Affects Your Spending Habits   14 years 2 weeks ago

Having a last name that starts with 'A' was always problematic for me in school. I had a lot of teachers who turned to the alphabet when deciding on who to pick on for answers, chores, etc. No good!

Now this is my kind of article! My favourite frugalish wine is Barefoot White Zinfandel. There's no better rosé on the market for its price, if you ask me.

  • 6 Awesome Reasons to Shop at Aldi   14 years 2 weeks ago

I could have written this article (except it wouldn't have been as well written or well organized!). I love my Aldi's - I can feed my family of five easily for $75 a week.

I agree with you about the hot dogs and coffee creamer. I haven't tried the canned soup! Maybe we need to write Aldi's and tell them we all agree. :D

  • 8 Things to Consider Before Switching to an Online-Only Bank   14 years 2 weeks ago

To me the thing that matters most is the customer service. I really don't want to open an account with a bank that pays me the best interest rate but makes me regret my decision, of opening an account with it, by harassing its customers for petty things.

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Save Money When Dining Out?   14 years 2 weeks ago

If it is a new restaurant, I ask if they have a Birthday Club. If they do, I sign up while there. I always check out their website before leaving the house to go eat to see if they have any coupons I could download. I also skip the beverages and dessert because that is usually so high in restaurants.

  • 8 Things to Consider Before Switching to an Online-Only Bank   14 years 2 weeks ago

You should look at several options before you determine which bank is the right one for you. If you travel a lot with your job, or just for fun, you may be better off going with a bigger banks that is located all over the United States. This can save you money in ATM fees. If you do not plan on traveling much you may find the products and customer service at a smaller bank a better fit. If you qualify for a credit union, you should take advantage of it. Credit unions offer higher interest rates on savings accounts and lower interest rates on loans. Generally the fees are much lower at credit unions as well.

  • 13 Natural and Easy Ways to Lower Your Blood Sugar   14 years 2 weeks ago

Well, where to begin. I am 57 years old, and have always exercised regularly, but 3 years ago, I upped my working out from 3 days a week to 5 days, doing spin class, spin boot camp, interval training, etc. I lost 30lbs and felt I was in the best shape of my life. Then on Valentines Day I was just finishing my workout class, and had a heart attack, the widow maker, they call it. I ended up getting to hospital in time and they put in two stents. Then after about 4 days in the hospital the Dr. walks in and says they are going to start me on diabetic meds because I now have type 2 diabetes. It was not showing up, because I was working out and eating fairly well, but the heart attack threw into full gear. I had absolutely no symptoms of heart blockage prior to my attack, and no indication of diabetes. I have one great uncle who had diabetes. I am 200lbs now, and they want me to get down to 175. Because of all my working out, I had very little body fat, but they still want me to lose the weight. This is going to be a challenge, as I have not weighed that since college. I am also skeptical it will make a difference in the diabetes. So I am trying to eat for heart health and diabetic health, and frankly it sucks. I was already pretty health conscious and diet conscious, but this takes it to a whole new level, and I feel I am being consumed by it. Does it ever settle down?
