It's an older one, but I really like Paul Michael's article on improving gas mileage. I posted about it on my personal blog: http://thisgirlisnotanisland.blogspot.com/2010/03/frugality-friday-gas-m...

One small error in this post: in most of the US, sexual orientation is NOT a protected category.

I'm glad I have never (so far) had to deal with questions that I believed were inappropriate in an interview!!

I really appreciate your frugal gluten-free living articles. A close friend of mine is gluten intolerant and my fiance and I have recently begun playing D&D at her house; she graciously makes dinner for us and I bring dessert. It's my constant battle to find great gluten-free recipes to make every two weeks, and I love sharing what I find with her! Thank you so much for your help - it's really not easy being gluten-free.

I can't say that any one article leaps to mind as my favorite, but I can say that Wise Bread is the blog I check first when I start my computer "stuff" for the day.

I would like to see more links to other sites on your home page--I know you'll choose good ones!

  • Buy Your Groceries European-Style   16 years 5 weeks ago

Bit of a strange top title, I have lived in many European contries and always shopped the way I did back at home in England. Big Shop once a week, including all fresh produce as it will usually last the week. I dont feel the shopping in Europe is vastly different enough to warrant this title.

  • Remove Car Dents Quickly and Cheaply   16 years 5 weeks ago

I have a 08 dodge ram. I tried the 2nd method 2 seperate times and really heat up the dent for 10 minutes and it did not do anything. I do not have a crease, just a couple small penny size dents. Not sure if anyone has had success with this but i did not...

I use a pretty similar system.

One thing I noticed is that I waste a lot less food when I'm going to the store often. Mainly because my schedule changes so much.

If I go shopping once a week on Saturday, who knows what I'm doing Wednesday night. If all of a sudden my plans change and I'm eating dinner somewhere else, I got a lot of left over food at home.

    Very interesting post!

I love that show. Every CEO should have to do that, maybe not on TV, but I would think they'd WANT to. My favorite bit was the lady garbage truck driver who had to pee into a coffee can, because she couldn't leave her route to find a restroom. Upper management gets too far removed from the guys, and gals in the trenches, it's nice to see that some are making a big effort to be regular people.

  • The Census Questions 8 and 9   16 years 5 weeks ago

I started to fill out the census form (my first time doing it as an adult) and I got stumped on questions 8 and 9. Not only stumped, I started to have all these...feelings - and questions. So many questions!

I googled said questions, and I'm glad that your post came up, because you articulated my EXACT view on this. Thanks for sharing, now I know I'm not crazy!

  • Dump Cake and Other Sweet, Easy Treats   16 years 5 weeks ago

Is there a recipe for this type of dump cake for chocolate? I was thinking about using a chocolate pie filling on the bottom of a greased 9x13 in. cake pan- but will the chocholate pie filling ( by Musselmans) burn? I was thinking of using evaprated milk on top of chocholate & then the Cake mix w/butter. Any advice? :D

  • 7 Ways to Make Use of Sub-Par Produce   16 years 5 weeks ago

I appreciate your tips for canning jams and jellies.  I have to admit that I've just made a few kinds on my lifetime, and because I like to toss a few overripe strawberries in with a rhubarb or peach jam, it never occurred to me that I may actually be hindering the setting process.  I think that the best way to use up these rogue fruits is to make a fruit leather in the dehydrator, but I'm always trying to think of ways to make my fruit purchases store longer.  I'll have to continue with the applesauce method and use your tips to add some various fruit flavors for variety.

    Thanks!

  • How to Use Up Remaining Balances on Prepaid Gift Cards   16 years 5 weeks ago

That's a great tip for filling up cans of lawnmower gas :)

I don't know that our small gas station would be so accomodating (even though they are supposed to allow you to charge any amount, some stations still huff at purchases smaller than $5).  That's good advice, however.  I'll keep that in mind!

  • 7 Ways to Make Use of Sub-Par Produce   16 years 5 weeks ago

Yes! That is a good tip :)

I dried a few kinds of peppers, and my house did smell rather "spicy" for days.  While it didn't bother me, it was kind of distracting.  I dry my peppers in the laundry room now, just in case we have company over and don't want the whole house smelling like chili.

  • 7 Ways to Make Use of Sub-Par Produce   16 years 5 weeks ago

I just want to point out that you should probably dry spicy chiles with the dehydrator outside; I'm not sure, but I suspect the strong circulation of air around spicy chiles would cause some of the spice in them to become airborne. I have this problem when people around me cook with spicy chiles, and I get burning sensations in my eyes and throat.

You can also dehydrate leafy greens like kale and spinach to a crisp, grind them to a powder, and sneak it into your family's food- I don't know if this would save much money, but there's lots of nutrients in them thar leaves!

  • Warren Buffett's Investment Advice: Why It's So Hard to Follow   16 years 5 weeks ago

Hmm interesting to peddle advice about "risk" when one sitting on a "pile of cash" such as that of Warren Buffet.
I too would be taking great risk if i had millions/billions to piss away such as Warren does.
It's a whole other story when one is a single parent with two kids to support on a modest income.
By the time Buffett had his first child in late 50's his personal savings was over 175K that equates to about half a million dollars in todays money. With that money he opened a brokerage firm in 1959 and three years later he was a multimillionaire by 1950's/60's standard.

In addition, he had a father who was a well educated, well to do businessman who owned his own brokerage firm. His grandfather owned his own successful business as well. So it's not like he didn't have some source of family "support" in the eventuality of his ventures collapsing.

Fast forward to today and people forget that Buffet has had market losses as well:

"Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway suffered a 77% drop in earnings during Q3 2008 and several of his recent deals appear to be running into large mark-to-market losses."

"In 2009, Buffett divested his failed investment in ConocoPhillips, saying to his Berkshire investors "I bought a large amount of ConocoPhillips stock when oil and gas prices were near their peak. I in no way anticipated the dramatic fall in energy prices that occurred in the last half of the year. I still believe the odds are good that oil sells far higher in the future than the current $40-$50 price. But so far I have been dead wrong."

On the personal side, he disowned his "adopted grandaughter" for participating in a documentary that "exposes the increasing
growing wealth gap between America's wealthy elite and the citizenry on the whole."
Aparently that film didn't sit well with the "elitist" grandpa.
A true philanthropist and human being concerned with the social welfare of others would have applauded her.

So before you dive into following the advice of a "guru" millionaire/billionaire consider the following:

    1. Billionaires aren't always right
    2. They don't necessarily have other people's financial
interest at heart when they peddle advice.
    3. Often times they become wealthy and remain so at the expense
of other's health and wellbeing (re: Warren 7+% ownership of
Coca-cola despite proven health hazard to children)
    4. They have more money than YOU so they can afford to lose big
    and still remain millionaires

You always have to ask the question "What do they have to gain when they open their mouths to talk to little ole you?"

  • 7 Ways to Make Use of Sub-Par Produce   16 years 5 weeks ago

As a long-time home canning enthusiast (nearly 20 years), I would not use anything but top-quality, freshest produce for jams, jellies, and marmalades. In fact, fruit spreads almost always benefit from the use of a small quantity of under-ripe fruit, because it tends to promote a better set. In my opinion, it's a waste of time, money, and stove fuel to use fruit that's past its prime for jams and jellies. I even try to use produce that's picked that very morning.

However! I wouldn't hesitate to add some over-ripe fruits to a batch of applesauce, say, plums or peaches or berries. But I wouldn't make it a significant portion of the overall volume of fruit. Also, I'd add some spices or some lemon juice, because a big reason not to can over-ripe fruit is that it doesn't have as much flavor and tartness as the freshest fruit.

Better to use up mushy fruit in a fruit sauce or a smoothie, I think. Otherwise I think the tips here are very good and useful!

  • Buy Your Groceries European-Style   16 years 5 weeks ago

If you live within walking distance of a grocery store with great local produce, this MIGHT be feasible. If you have to drive your car to get there, not feasible at all. I live 4 miles from town, a 7 minute drive and it costs at least a dollar to drive there and back in gas. Now I've just used up whatever savings there might have been on the groceries I just bought in gasoline! Not even to mention the time involved in going and finding out what is on sale, and then the time spend in preparation. If you make a menu in the beginning of the week, shop the local ads to find what's on sale that week, purchase all you'll need for those meals, and then do the preparation at the beginning of the week, it is much, much simpler. I buy meat at our local meat market, usually once or twice a month in bulk, trim and prepare the meat, then freeze. I've got everything I need for a few weeks worth of meals and then I plan accordingly.

    Cheers!

Just wanted to say thanks for a good article. I am the creator of www.roadroast.com. This website is supposed to be the very first online cookbook dealing only with cooking on your engine. So far I have only bodged up the website but not really added any recipes.

I would love it if I could get you would go visit my site and add your recipe to my database. Alternatively I would like your permission to add your recipe to my website myself.

Thank you for a great write-up.

  • How to Use Up Remaining Balances on Prepaid Gift Cards   16 years 5 weeks ago

I agree, you definately want to use those last few dollars on any prepaid card or gift card. The numbers are staggering on the amount of prepaid cards and gift cards that never get redeemed or remain partially unused. It is big business for banks and retailers.

Prepaid cards usually have a target market of the unbanked, but now they are more widely used and will continue to grow. So if you get a prepaid card or gift card, remember to use it all up!

As some other posters mentioned I also freeze reduced cost meat when I get a great deal - alternatively I COOK it and then freeze it - for example a few extra cooked meatloaves in the freezer are a godsend in my houehold!

A thought provoking post - I do shop more than one time a week but I'm RARELY shopping for 'today's' or even 'this week's' foodstuffs, just great bargains!
