  • Cheapest Ways to Get Your Caffeine Fix   16 years 5 weeks ago

You can buy a kilogram (1,000,000 mg) of pure caffeine for about $75 on ebay. That works out to $0.0007 per mg, or less than 1/10 of no-doz. I guess you would just mix small amounts of it into water or juice or something. Obviously a bit crazy, but it's the logical conclusion of this post.

    Just sayin'.

  • Concession stand treats – a license to print money.   16 years 5 weeks ago

If you are really wanting to make money with your concession stand you need something that stands out in your window or something people can smell. You need Cotton Candy, Pickles, or Lemonade if you want to attract a buyer. Try a local specialty concession distributors or online places like www.nationwidecandy.com if you want items that will help you stand out. Your profit can be more if you sell items people are not accustom to what the price is or what your cost is. Avoid all the standard items everyone buys from the clubs. Most people will not go out of their way to buy a Snicker bar…..but they will for Funnel Cake and Cotton Candy. If it is allowed here is a link to the place we buy our Funnel Cake Mix and Cotton Candy Floss this alone took me weeks to find a good source:

Maybe this will save someone else time…and I hope this helps?

  • Warren Buffett's Investment Advice: Why It's So Hard to Follow   16 years 5 weeks ago

Warren Buffett's investment advice is easy to follow -- he recommends that investors should put their money into low cost index funds. Many investors who followed an indexing strategy (well diversified across asset classes) and stayed the course have done quite well over the past few years.

  • Magazines for Free or Cheap   16 years 5 weeks ago

I use do to Coke rewards when I drank soda.  Now I've found that I have more than enough magazines without it.  (But it's still a great resource -- especiall if you drink the stuff or can find bottle caps w/ codes in the park or at sporting events.)

Also, I like to give my gently used, but still current, magazines that I'm finished with to the local nursing home.  The residents don't get to read much new content, and they really appreciate it!

    Thanks for the comment :)

  • 51 Uses for Coca-Cola – the Ultimate List   16 years 5 weeks ago

My fiance's family is of the "Coca-Cola age" and gives the grandbabies the stuff whenever they want it!! I cringe everytime!! (My fiance' isn't around when they bat their eyes at their nanny-he is against it, as well) We were just telling one of his 9yo twin boys how bad it is, and was able to pull this site up for proof positive!! He's not so keen on downing a Coke when the mood often strikes him. He raised his eyebrows more than once during our read! Thank you so much!!!

@simple in France - Great advice! People visiting the US without travel insurance will more often than not find that their home country plans won't suffice. That's why I always recommend travel insurance (the right kind of travel insurance, that is)!

I LOVE CAFFEINE-----AND THIS ARTICLE WAS A KEEPER! You inspired me to consider more tea too!! Don't overlook ALDI's. Their prices on great coffee and tea are amazing. I also limit my caffeine intake which saves some cash. Too much caffeine makes me a bit INSANE!

  • Magazines for Free or Cheap   16 years 5 weeks ago

I get many, many magazines for free and can verify that these sites (and a few others) really do work. I don't get bills, rarely get subscription phone calls (maybe because I'm not home a lot) and it all works well. The used bookstore near me will buy recent magazines, so I've turned it into a small money maker. It's not a lot, but it finances my monthly comic book habit. Some magazines also regularly include grocery and personal care coupons (mostly womens and home magazines. Although I was finding free dog biscuit coupons in Entertainment Weekly for a few months a while back). So that's another benefit.

Other places to get free magazines are through various points programs. Coke rewards, erewards, frequent flyer programs where you never get enough miles for a free flight or upgrade and various other, similar programs provide other resources for free magazines.

  • The "marriage penalty" of taxes in America - how does it affect you?   16 years 5 weeks ago

never happen, it would put the IRS mostly out of business, ruin most accounts and be decried as unfair to the poor and working poor. It makes a ton of sense but, for that reason, it will never make it through our government.

  • The "marriage penalty" of taxes in America - how does it affect you?   16 years 5 weeks ago

The amount of the tax is not the point. I too am married and get SLAMMED with a marriage penalty each year. The point is that the government talks out of both sides of their mouth. Government always chants "family values, family values" yet they set up a tax structure that SPECIFCALLY says stay singe and keep more of your money. This needs to change. Married people shouldn't pay less than a single but the most certainly shouldn't be penalized. Frankly, if Obama's awful healthcare bill go through and Bush's tax reductions are let to expire. I am seriously going to consider seperations and just living together. It would save us +/- $20,000 dollars a year. Just putting that into an account with 2% interest would pay for both my kid's college AND leave money left over for many other things. This is TOTALLY WRONG to be taken advantage of like this.

  • FINANCIAL IQ TEST: How Healthy Is Your Health Care Plan?   16 years 5 weeks ago

The above is an excellent list for people living in the US full time. I may bookmark it for the next time I live in the US myself!

I would also strongly recommend that those visiting the US from countries where they are insured (like France) make sure they understand the terms of their medical coverage in the US.

For example, your coverage goes with you from France, but only covers a percentage of the fees that would normally be charged in France--as there's a huge difference in costs between the US and France, you could be left paying quite a bit out of pocket if you have a health need while visiting the US.

Checking before you go and finding out what exactly your local insurance covers is a wise idea.

  • America Is the No Vacation Nation   16 years 5 weeks ago

I don't work for Corporate America anymore, but I did out of college, and literally the first time I took vacation (one week - TO GET MARRIED) I was laid off. The company rehired me shortly but I was too freaked out to take any vacation days or sick time after that, as I noticed it was seriously frowned upon for anyone who hadn't been there for years to take vacation.

A lot of companies here in the U.S. don't give a certain number of weeks per year, but use a system whereby you accrue a certain number of hours or fractions of hours of vacation time per every 40 or 80 hours worked. This means that you might have one week of vacation time earned after a year working, but after 6 months you might only have 2.5 days earned. Plus you have to get your vacation approved months in advance at every company I ever worked for and certain times of year are "blacked out" for vacations, plus the manager can just say "you can't take vacation at that time" or "you can't use that much vacation time at once" and that is that.

My husband is a postdoc at a R1 university and they are MUCH more flexible. He gets 3 weeks paid vacation every year and takes it. But even he can't take it whenever he wants to.

  • You did WHAT with my SSN?   16 years 5 weeks ago

The bank would fall under the rules of the Banking Modernization Act of 1999 alao known a the Grahm Leach Bliley Act or GLB.

This Federal law specifies what infomration needs to be secured and how to secure it. For instance, banks cannot use just any encryption for email or account information. It must comply with the Federal Information Processing (FIPS) rules. At the very least, SSN infomration printed or written down needs to be "Redacted". This is where only the last 4 digits of the SSN are written or displayed on terminals. Walking around with customer account information or SSN's is currently illegal. Even if it's on a laptop. If the files on the laptop are in compliance with FIPS standards, then that would be in compliance. Written on a note pad in someone's purse is not in compliance.

You bank agent is clearly not in compliance with GLB or FIPS and you can file a complaint with federal government. I wouldn't file with the state AG because GLB and FIPS is specifically Federal. Your state may have additional rules as well and would be quicker to respond than the Federal Gov't.

  • Extended Car Warranties: 3 Things to Know   16 years 5 weeks ago

One of the biggest tricks for after market warrantee is that they will not pay more for a repair than the Yellow book value of the car. While most after market warrantees cost thousands of dollars, $2,000-$3,000, you need a lot of repairs to make this warrantee pay off. By the time your car needs these types of repairs, it's usually old and has high mileage. If the repair exceeds the valuse of the car, they will "Total" it and not pay for the repair. You're out the money and the car. I have noticed that TV advertising for these warrantees say they cover cars with up to 250,000 miles. What value do you think a car with a quarter million miles has? I traded a 4 year old car with 180,000 miles on it and Kelly calculated the trade in value of $2,200.

This problem is on top of the well documented problem of after market warrantee companies denying claims that are specifically covered. They best bet is to put some money away for a rainy day and perform the recommended maintenance on your car. For instance, fluid levels are easy to maintain. Timing chains usually need replacing between 70,000 to 100,000 miles and costs about $800-$1,000. Be mindful of maintenance and be prepared to pay. Owing a car is expensive. A little maintenance and fore thought can go a long way. Here is a good tip. If you need a car repair, find out if there is a maintenance item in the same area as the repair and have it maintained with the repair. Often takeing the car apart is the most expensive part of the repair and you can just pay for parts if you do the maintenance with an already required repair.

  • Should We All Just Stop Paying the Mortgage?   16 years 5 weeks ago

I stopped paying my mortgage 18 months ago to stockpile cash.
I could afford to pay, but had little left over. If my wife and I had run into a situation (if either of us got sick or hurt) we would have lost the home. So for the past 18 months we have been not paying our mortgage payment ($1827) and have stock piled $32,886 into our safety deposit box. We just negotiated a new interest rate and put the 18 months that we did not pay on the back end of the loan. The lawyer we hired to go through a "fake foreclosure" as we like to call it cost us a flat fee of $2000. So now we are starting fresh. We used $15,000 of the stock piled cssh to pay off our car and credit cards. Our credit score lost some points, but we don't care. We can now make extra payments on our principal and have a $15,000 emergency fund. We should have our home payed off in 7-10yrs.
