  • Warren Buffett's Investment Advice: Why It's So Hard to Follow   16 years 5 weeks ago

This post runs contrary to Buffett's main philosophy of buying good undervalued companies and holding the stock... for almost ever.

He would never jump into the market just because it had taken a beating for a period of time. He would do the due diligence on some companies and then invest in them if he thought the fundamentals were sound and the long term prospects were favorable. The fact that the market had lost value might indeed make some companies attractive that would have had less value at the pre-devaluation levels.

If you follow Buffett's REAL strategy, and you have confidence in the companies in which you're investing, it's much easier to do the right thing and not panic too much about your investments.

Otherwise, if you're just trying to time the market, you're gambling!

Further to this theory, by investing in the market when people were scared, Buffet played an active role in recovery. He inspired investor confidence and aided struggling companies in the turn around. Brave investing in a down market is certainly more palatable than bailouts!

Human Fraud - ditto for me. And don't you just hate all those smug pillocks who tell you "don't worry, it'll get better". Yeah, right.

this is true that warren buffett's advice is much easier said than done in the most cases particluarly if you have tried another investing formula like timing the market or something. I think that someone who gets exposed to warren buffett's way of investing at an early age stands a better chance at following the advice than people trying another formula. I read the intelligent investor and the oracle said that he was taught the fundamentals of value investing fresh out of teenage. so in a nutshell, i think that it is better to start early when going into value investing

  • Warren Buffett's Investment Advice: Why It's So Hard to Follow   16 years 5 weeks ago

This is so true. It's so hard to remove your emotions from your investment decisions. It seems counterintuitive to invest when you and everyone around you is scared, but those are the best buying opportunities.

We all need to learn to be more like Buffet and not let our emotions cloud our decisions.

  • Warren Buffett's Investment Advice: Why It's So Hard to Follow   16 years 5 weeks ago

What would you say now about investing? Are people starting to get greedy, so should we become fearful?

The DOW has reached 11,000 and I think there is some sort of bubble building over there. The basic fundamentals of the economy have not changed much since a year ago. Unemployment is still at around 10%, economy is growing only at a rate of around 2.5%. I dont see much change in the underlying economy for the stock market to see a 75% growth from its lows.

Thank you for the heads up.  I hadn't thought about the youths and how they may take this article.  I added a warning before the list, so hopefully, they aren't irresponsible with the information.

I forget how reckless I was when I was younger.  I sincerely hope people are responsible with this information.

  • Feeling Stuck? 100 Ways to Change Your Life   16 years 5 weeks ago

sorry, but this really is no good. I have tried to change my life to make it something happy but it still isn't. What I really wanted is what I really can't find. I've tried new hobbies, I'm active in lots of things, I have a decent job but what I really want is the security of a family, but that is the one thing I can't find. I am a failure and I wish I had never been born.

This is a great strategy to get the creative energy flowing. Getting unstuck is all about movement and this is a simple exercise that moves both the hand and the imagination. I'm a big believer that change - including getting unstuck - just needs a small step to begin to create momentum. Too often we stay stuck because we think about the size of the hill to climb rather than focusing on one step at a time. Small steps taken consistently create change. That's my mantra!

Including OTC drugs on this list is pretty irresponsible, as a lot of younger caffeine junkies (I'm looking at you, Mountain Dew folks) dose throughout the day. Excedrin for example, contains acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol) which is dangerous and potentially fatal (kills your liver, ugly way to die) at surprisingly low doses.

  • How to Make Moonshine   16 years 5 weeks ago

You can check the temp of the pot itself. Try to get near the top part of the liquid level. Near the fire, the pot can get a small bit warmer then the rest. You can crank the heat right up to full blast if you like, it can only climb as high as the contents will allow to boil. For alcohol, that is about 180. When the temp starts to rise, you are running out of alcohol and it will try to climb to the boiling point of water from then out.

The lid does not have to be perfect. Just try to minimize the leaks. Steam will try to escape to the easiest exit point. You want this to be the copper tube. If there is a leak in the lid, it will back up there if the condenser tube gets stuck, backed up with moonshine.

If you look back, I walked you thru a way to flavour you product with fruit. It will be sweet and does not use an extra distillation. You can use soft fruit this way, like peaches and plumbs. If you do not want to wait the time out, put the juniper berries and so on in the thumper. The steam will carry off the oils during the first run. You will want to have a liquid in the bottom like before, bubbling thru it. Then have some shelf to keep the herbs above the liquid, so the steam can pass thru them to get to the coil.

If you created a column still, took out the packing and filled it with rose petals, this is how they may essential oils for fragrances. There are essential oil stills out there you can buy and do this with. The herbs and fruit peels work the same way.

  • Why is it so expensive to be healthy?   16 years 5 weeks ago

If you have a backyard why can't you grow the vegetables yourself? Seeds cost very little and will produce alot of food. Growing lettuce, tomatoes, green beans, sweet peas, potatoes are some of the easiest things to grow.

I found as a renter that the cheapest housing wasn't next door to the university or in the best parts of town. Look around the neighborhoods where you want to live and look a little beyond your neighborhood of choice; living on or near the edge of your desired environs might save you big bucks. Also, rent under your means; if you don't need the bells and whistles, don't pay for them. An apartment complex without a pool and exercise room and WIFI can still be perfect living space and is likely much cheaper.

I've been a landlord, too, and we always let tenants take the cost of materials off their rent. We also liked to have walkthroughs; it prevents a lot of problems later.

If you paint, however...don't paint the walls a dark color...please. I've had to paint three coats of primer over Barbie Doll pink enamel on the walls, and let me tell you, that was NOT fun.

If you don't have a credit history, or a rental history, be forewarned that landlords will not be happy and may turn you down. As a landlord, the report from the agency that says you are a good prospect is all we have to go on. We once rented to someone who had a good job, but no recent history as he was newly out of prison. We took a chance on him...big mistake. We ended up evicting him for non-payment [and he had tons of cash on him] because he was a drug addict and he and his girlfriend used one of the rooms as their shooting gallery and we had to clean blood off the walls and ceiling from where they'd discharged their needles.

If you have pets and want your deposit back, clean up after them. My husband had to replace linoleum and underlayment after a tenant's cat peed all over the floor for a year and a half. Needless to say, with the amount of cleaning and work involved to fix the place to make it rentable again, they didn't get their deposit back. They were pissed, but they were accountable for the actions of the cat and didn't take the time and effort to prevent or remediate the mess.

Don't get too excited over the product, no matter how much you want it. If you show too much eagerness, the seller will sense your desperation and refuse to budge.

  • How to Answer 23 of the Most Common Interview Questions   16 years 5 weeks ago

    Hi All,

I have attended so many interviews even i had these kind of experience, once I faced interview in media company there i faced group discussion. So at that time if we don't know about the topic what we have to do.

Actualy that interview was for the post of I Audiance Development, I was well prepared about audience development and about the company. But suddenly they called all other candidates and gave topic to discuss.

1 think i was not knowing about the topic and for every thing they were asking me first. I taught atleast other candidate will speak some thing then i will have some idea so that i can speak.

It was realy very difficult Interview.

You know in some other interview they use to ask what 2 charecter u like in ur dad, mom, your sister, brother, boss and in that what charecter you would like to involve in your charecter these kind of questions.

How was your experience in your previous company? what all changes happened in you.?

I'm only living in my second apartment, but I'm moving this May, so these tips are very helpful for me. (Thanks!)

But my knowledge from moving out of our first apartment will serve me well this time around. We moved into an older complex that wasn't in the best shape, but it was cheap and that's all that mattered. We didn't take pictures when we moved in (being first time renters, we were clueless) -- big mistake. Even though we did a walk through and wrote down things that were damaged when we moved in, they didn't take that into consideration when we moved out and we only got back $100 of our $500 deposit. We lived on the second floor and they told us that we didn't clean the outsides of the windows. There was no way for us to clean them, so how were we supposed to do this? They said they had to pay for them to be cleaned. We went back and checked out the windows -- which had not been cleaned. Liars. Absolutely ridiculous.

When moving out we also had to pay a full month's rent for moving out on the 5th. We were not reimbursed at all. So we had to pay $525 & $850 (rent for both places) when we moved. Plus the $500 deposit for the new place. They claimed that the reason that they had to charge the full month's is because we were setting them back. But we found out that a week after we moved out, there were new tenants moved in. They made double the rent. Sneaky.

So my advice is -- take pictures, take notes, & if possible, get background information on the rental company/landlord. Make sure they're not known for stiffing people.

arrrrgh....I'll do my homework and go over all these...again.  Seriously, the most frustrating part about this is how long it took me to figure this all out when I just should have called my friendly local CPA and let them do what they do best.  It's just division.  How could I have screwed it up so badly?

I'll look it over and edit.  I agree it should be dollars, not cents.  But the ranking is correct.  Now to get to the bottom of the "way off" bit.

    tbc...

Ok, I found the problem.  Your count for caffeine is half what mine is for Rockstar, which accounts for the double cost.  Rockstar only has 80 mg per can according to my calculations, which is where I get the breakdown.

@J I like the idea of breaking it down to the 100 mg of caffeine as a stable point.  I thought about the best way to lay it out and hadn't thought of that.  Great idea.

  • Back to School: The Case for majoring in English   16 years 5 weeks ago

Major in what you love or you will regret it later! Employers look for winners with profit potential and losers will never receive the position no matter what the degree. History shows you don't even need a degree to be a success so don't listen to those idiots who think their future has anything to do with yours.

In all categories of degrees you will find people who make it or not! Five years from now they will not even care what your degree is in so enjoy the process now. You know you are talking to a moron when they try to say that the type of degree has anything to do with your long term success. Study the recent history of the most successful people in this country and the truth will be told. Never ask permission from strangers to live your life your way....The world belongs to the risk takers!!! so go for it!! Love the article....

  • $8000 housing tax credit can now be turned into cash at closing according to FHA   16 years 5 weeks ago

I have found that many sellers are using the credit to their advantage in negotiations. Knowing the buyer is getting 8 grand back leads to higher market prices. And the many who are getting into homes with the credit are going to be stuck in houses that aren't worth what they paid for them. That is precisely what got us into this mess.

I have money saved and will wait for this "stimulus" to expire as I think I can get a better bargain on a home.
