  • How to Make Moonshine   16 years 5 weeks ago

Granulated sugar is just sucrose; it doesn't make any difference whether it comes from cane or beats.

In fact, as far as the yeast is concerned, it doesn't even matter if it's sucrose. Yeast can also eat glucose, fructose, etc.

So, the key thing for moonshine is to get the cheapest sugar you can find. For most people, that's white granulated sugar, but if you've got a source for really cheap glucose or high fructose corn syrup, go for it.

(Most yeast can also digest maltose, the kind found in grain, which is why you can make beer and scotch. The yeasts that live in sourdough starter are an exception. Yeasts in general can't digest lactose, so don't try to make moonshine out of milk.)

Zorcy, there's 2 two types of white granulated table sugar, isn't there? The refined cane stuff and the beet stuff? Is there any real difference between them when using it for making alcohol? I always boil it up with lemon juice for about 20 minutes before when making a wash; a guy I know who is a research chemist said to do this to turn it into "invert sugar", which supposedly ferments better. Dunno if there's any truth in this at all; it "stuck" this time! And thanks for the help; it's bubbling away again.

Lead is an excellent example of a neurotoxin that tastes pleasant. The ancient Greeks and Romans added powdered lead to wine to make it sweeter and induce stronger sleep.

Another would be antifreeze and cats. The alcohol in the antifreeze tastes very sweet to pets. But to drink for them is to die.

  • The 7 Laws of Negotiation   16 years 5 weeks ago

Great post and it could not have come at a better time. Just yesterday I was looking at a dinning room table and it was just a little more than I wanted to spend. My friend and I were both wondering if I should try to negotiate and if so - how does it begin.

    Thanks for the tips.

I am in the military stationed in the UK. I have a couple of Bose systems that I don't want to mess w/ but I do have a JVC combo unit that I wouldn't mind unlocking. Is there an unlock code for the JVC HR-XVC21UJ. I've been looking on line for weeks now and cannot find one for this particular unit. Thanks, Nick

When we were buying another camera for our photography business, i negotiated it all through email.

I recognized there are two types of sellers, actually pros and recreational users. I always asked if they could come down to my price- if they could I would buy. The recreational users would not negotiate (wanting to get their money back) the other pros would as they are looking for some cash to move forward.

I did not want to waste my time in-person negotiating with someone who would not negotiate. So I love negotiating via email for things listed on craigslist. But I always quote a price and start negotiations so as not to offend.

Unfortunately, seasonally it has a lot of farm chemicals in it. It's absolutely safe to drink in the -
I was just going to look up which months are the bad ones, but I got distracted by the Minneapolis water agency site. "Tap Minneapolis!" Anyway. Late spring and early fall we have atrazine & other farm chemical problems sometimes.

The standards for monitoring tap water are way higher than the ones for bottled water, plus most bottled water is just tap water from somewhere else.

Unfortunately, the places I've lived with bad-tasting water, it had nothing to do with healthiness - a lot of water-soluble minerals taste bad without affecting your health at all, and a lot of dangerous pollutants (lead, perc, e. coli) don't taste like anything at all.

    @Phillip

My girlfriend in college, who now happens to be my wife, went to school at U of I in Champaign. I swear every time I went, I heard about how great the tap water was.

I went to school in Charleston, (EIU) and the water was absolutely terrible. The cheapest option for me was too just buy a water filter pitcher. Probably cost around $50 a year.

In regards to weight, the formula is pretty simple. Every pereson needs a certain amount of food to maintain their weight. For those who have a fast matabalism, they need to eat more, for those who have a slow matabalism, they need to eat less. Now, to lose weight, you have to eat less than what you need to maintain your weight, which can mean exercising more, or eating a less. How fast you lose the weight will depend on how much you exercise or how much you cut down your eating. For those wanting to lose weight, try cutting your meals down, and increasing your exercise. Once you hit your goal weight, you can go back to eating the amount of food you need to maintain your weight. Good luck!

Isn't floride a byproduct of aluminum production? I heard it was introduced in or around WWII as a way to get rid of the toxic waste from aluminum. Is this true?

Thanks for the info from "experimentally"...very interesting. Do you know of the "Eco-filtro"? I use it here in Guatemala and a lot of places do where gringos work (it seems the amoebas prefer us to the Maya or others that are guatemalteca).
It uses a filtration process that goes from a ceramic container into a receptacle. There is some sort of treatment on the outside of the ceramic that kills all the nasty stuff in the water.
The water tastes sweet and delicious after using this method. The website for it is:
    www.ecofiltro.com
I'm curious as to what you think of this method.
The importance of potable water cannot be stressed enough. I was going to be in Guatemala for about 4 months to volunteer...that was last August. Now I need to stay here for another year or more for health care (I don't have health insurance) because Alaska health care is marginal at best. Roles got reversed it seems. You are right, amoebas are nothing to mess around with and some of the medicines make me sicker than the amoebas and don't kill them all...So it is critical to make sure water is safe for this and so many health reasons.
Thanks again, glad you are working this blog.

R, if you don't mind my asking, what insurance do you have for your dog? I'm looking for some for my puppy, and $100/year is much less than anything I've found so far!

I love Chicago water. It's delicious. People give me strange looks for choosing the tap water instead of the filtered water at work, but it tastes so much better! I used to live in a town in VA with yummy water, too, unless it got too dry and then we used river water, which was not as tasty as the reservoir water.

I've found Baltimore water, beach water, and some well water to be yucky. Fortunately, my own tap water is usually good. Woohoo! Cheap, delicious, good for you!

I kinda agree with what Robert said... Its possibly one of the hardest things to do to have a cheap night out and yet tasteful...this is especially true when it comes to things that are alcohol related. Most cheap alcohols aren't what we normally call tasteful.

Try a brass compression fitting and BLACK silicone to seal and "glue" to the lid. You can just pull off the nut on the compression fitting.

Willie, try dissolving some table sugar in hot water, then pour that in the mix. Another bit of an issue, is the type of sugar you used to start with. table sugar is digestible by the yeast easily. there are some complex sugars that need converted first. That is why some people use malted barley. The enzyme breaks the sugars down and allow the yeast to eat it. Get a few Bean-O tabs, crush them, dissolve them and drop them in. You should see some air bubbles in the air lock within the hour.

Yeast. Any bubble activity shows the yeast is alive. If you did kill off some yeast with hot water, some survived. They will double in volume every 20 minutes. If you went from 10 Million cells to 10, then it will take a while to get back to 10 Million. That is where it will just start to do the work. Keep the temps right, and be patient. It sounds like you are still in the race. Before you add your yeast, always pitch it. That is re hydrating dry yeast. Take a cup on warm water, a tablespoon of table sugar and the yeast. Stir it up and sit it in a warm, calm area. it will bubble up a lot. 20 minutes doubles your yeast. It also gives them some time to start working before you throw them into a strange environment that forces them to overwork with all that sugar and water volume.

I decided to use an enameled cookoing pot to make a still out of. I already drilled a 1/4 inch hole into the lid to accomodate the 1/4 inch copper tubing. I'm trying to figure out a way to firmly attach the tubing and make it as detachable as possible. I know that the most firm methtod would be to solder it, but I want to break it down after each opperation. Would just using a dough mix work to seal the tubing? Would two corks or stoppers work if I attach them to the top and bottom of the lid? I have a tap and die set...could I thread the tubing and the hole in the lid? Does anyone know what the best method would be? Thanks.

My dad was a chemist who owned a small laboratory and was hired by many water treatment plants to test the water at various stages of cleaning in order to comply with the Department of Environmental Protection regulations (in Pennsylvania).
I worked for him for a summer and had to collect water / sewage samples from the water treatment plants. After seeing where the water was coming from, and the number of chemicals put in it to kill all the crap in it I lost my desire to drink tap water. Maybe bottled water isn't any better but at least I can pretend it came from Michigan!
