I tried to do this also, but I got the same message as Brian did. When I go back through the registration process on my "main page", the system will not allow me to complete the process.

  • Software review: TurboTax   18 years 5 weeks ago

I will not use TurboTax again. Last year I completed the return successfully online but was unable to print it, and their help desk could not help me or print it for me. This year I was all done, checked and double checked the numbers, and just as I pushed the button to send my return to the IRS, it doubled my income! There was no way to retrieve it so I had to file an amended return - which, of course, I couldn't do on the site. I had to find the paper forms at my PO and go to the trouble of re-filing, which I could have done in the first place and which will delay my refund for some weeks. What a waste of time and money.

Just be warned that *if* you run into a problem with their software, their support is next to non-existant. I'd used Turbo Tax for the last five years or so with great luck, but this year it miscalculated my tax and it was incredibly difficult to resolve the situation. My husband has a Health Savings Account through his employer, so we are required to submit a form 8889. That form became corrupted somehow ~ it calculated excess contributions (and figured tax on the excess) even though our contributions were $2K below the limit. All the figures I had entered were correct, and no amount of deleting and reentering them would fix it. To make my aggravation level worse, the problem didn't emerge till after I paid. I searched the help files, FAQS, and support forums extensively and tried every suggestion I could find, but nothing worked. My posts on their "support forums" were answered only by others having the same problem, not Turbo Tax staff, and my emails were essentially blown off with "well, form 8889 seems to work for us". The only phone number I could find on the site came with a $30 price tag, which I hated to pay since I'd already given them over a $100. Finally, in response to my fourth contact attempt, they emailed a phone number for free support. The tech on the phone was able to quickly fix my problem by directing me to a part of the site I hadn't found on my own and having me delete the form 8889 altogether. When I started the interview questions over it worked like a breeze. If I had been able to talk to this tech when the problem first popped up, it would have been solved immediately. But instead I got no response from Turbo Tax for three weeks, and spent more hours trying to resolve the situation than I had with all the rest of the return combined.

Great tip, I just sent this too a friend at work but she was a little offended.

  • Are You Stealing From Your Photographer?   18 years 5 weeks ago

Make no mistake about it, there will come a time when technological advancement will make massive, dynamic multi-angle camera setups cheaper than human labor. On that day, the rape of art will end, and photography will once again be the domain of the artist instead of the businessman.

A couple of times a year, especially before a big event or portraits, I combine a couple teaspoons of baking soda with peroxide and scrub my teeth using my toothbrush. The result is visibly whiter teeth, at a fraction of the cost and way less time. This should be used sparingly - not more than once or twice a year.

As someone who recently cut her own waist length hair for a charitable donation, I would ask that people not donate to Locks of Love. A quick google search and review of thier financial records shows that despite them taking in huge amounts of hair, they make very few wigs and charge those that they give them to.

If you really want to donate for a good cause, sell the hair you cut and donate the money to the appropriate place.

  • What's the Best Way to Get out of Debt?   18 years 5 weeks ago

nmh - I'm proud of you.

It ain't easy to pay off a debt like that. It's agonizing and slow and demoralizing. And yet you seem to have a positive attitude about it.

I worked for years (and continue to work) to pay off my student loans. I lived on the cheap and did without and struggled with my new family to pay off my debt. At the same time, my best friend went to Jordan and bought a new house before declaring bankruptcy. To get the biggest bang for her buck she financed a "free" trip to Italy just before filing.

She called me not long afterward to complain that her student loan wasn't forgiven. Here I was, proud to have paid off my college credit cards and starting in on my student loans without having the benefit of her luxuries, trying to be understanding. I did explain to her that responsibility with her student loans meant that another kid would have those loans available. Also, it wasn't her lender's fault that she didn't finish her graduate program. She wasn't open to that so I dropped it. I do value her friendship even if I don't share her financial values.

Anyway, you are doing a great personal favor to me. You make me feel good about my struggle. It's good to know you are in the world.

  • Filler Strategies for Amazon’s Free Super Saver Shipping   18 years 5 weeks ago

    Hi Paul,
FreeShipping.org has a search function that will allow you to search only for items at Amazon.com that are eligible for free shipping. It beats pasting the emi code all the time.

As for a filler strategy, I just buy another book.

Another worthy cause to donate your hair to is Pantene Beautiful Lengths. They use it to make wigs for women who have lost their hair to cancer.

    @Luke:

I'd start by contacting the place you're moving it to, and trying to get them to handle the paperwork for the move.  I've had much better luck that way, in terms of avoiding the need for notaries, signature guarantees and the like.  (I assume that the fund families have a gentleman's agreement among themselves to sort things out if it turns out that some identity thief tries to move your IRA.)

  • Software review: TurboTax   18 years 5 weeks ago

Personally, I actually prefer to do my taxes by hand, filling out the forms and adding manually. I've used tax software before (Turbo Tax and a Quick Tax) but I just like the simplicity of filling out a bundle of papers.

  • Getting Something for Nothing – My $25 from Revolution MoneyExchange   18 years 5 weeks ago

I've heard some very good things about this service. PayPal has been getting to a point where an alternative is needed and this seems to be a good choice! I'll definitely be trying it out when I have a few minutes to sign up.

  • Farecast your Flights for Big Savings   18 years 5 weeks ago

Thanks for sharing your positive experience with our site Nora! Just wanted to make sure I mention our other cool feature which is predicting when best to buy your tickets!

Kacie, our research has shown that flight prices fluctuate quite a bit over the course of 90 days so buying early may not always save you money. You should setup a fare alert to monitor prices and wait for our "Buy Now" recommendation.

    Cheers.

  • If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?   18 years 5 weeks ago

I think it's important to think a bit about what it means to be "smart". Most experts these days will agree that we're discovering new types of "intelligence" all the time. Emotional/interpersonal intelligence, kinesthetic intelligence, logical/mathematical intelligence are all exhibited to varying degrees in all of us.

I agree the most important thing is to find something you truly love to do. If that is also something you're very good at, have an innate intelligence for, you're probably well on your way to being "rich" by at least one definition of the word.

  • Getting Something for Nothing – My $25 from Revolution MoneyExchange   18 years 5 weeks ago

Thanks for reviewing this product, Linsey! I had seen the ads but didn't want to spend the time looking into how legit this company is. Since PayPal charges fees for me to receive money from anyone, this would be a good account to have when I need to get money to and from my friends and family conveniently. And the free $25 is nice too! I got the $25 email before the screen even confirmed my account signup!

Hey, Philip! This was so topical; thanks for posting it! I've got to move my 401k over, and I was still puzzling over the details.

  • CFL Bulbs: Greener than most, but not green enough   18 years 5 weeks ago

I'm waiting for LED bulbs to become more practical/affordable. In the mean time, I'm hoping no one is throwing away perfectly good incandescents just to install a CFL. If you're going to change to CFLs, at least wait until you have a burned-out bulb!

  • Getting Something for Nothing – My $25 from Revolution MoneyExchange   18 years 5 weeks ago

That's strange.. I signed up and hubby signed up with no problem. Let us know if you hear anything.

Edited to add:  a friend just emailed me that they were able to do it with no problems.  Google searches have turned up a few people who were having problems.  I'm not sure why some are able and some aren't.
