  • What's the Best Way to Get out of Debt?   18 years 5 weeks ago

but I'm neurotic about repaying debt. I realize in many cases it isn't your fault but still, to know that I owe a parking ticket or money to a friend for dinner, or that I'm late on a mortgage payment, all of these are like nails on a blackboard to my ears. Is that weird? I feel like everyone I know is in heavy debt.

When I got engaged I helped my fiance get out of $18,000 of credit card debt. He also owed his dad $5,000. Since his dad wasn't charging interest, we slowed payments there and upped payments to the card, including borrowing against his 401K. I'm sure some people might advise against that, but a 401K is getting a lot less interest than the credit card was charging. Plus, the constant stress of the credit card was a strain on other areas of our lives. Good luck to everybody!

    Seems very similar to PayPal..

I would imagine that opting out is smart.  I don't think they are any more inclined to run a credit request than when you open a free checking account at your local bank (which mine doesn't do unless you are applying for a line of credit.)  If so, then you probably get the same credit request when you open any online account (i.e. ING Direct, etc.)

  • Generosity or Stupidity?   18 years 5 weeks ago

I used to do this, in a more limited fashion, in my case it was linked to denial of my situation. Looking back it was obviously pretty stupid & ultimately extended the period I was paying off my debts considerably.

I will say in my case though it proved an essential step in the road to being financially sensible and an adult.

  • DO NOT buy a digital camera online until you read this.   18 years 5 weeks ago

Sometimes I think, we here in Germany live in a kind of heaven. The law allows everyone to cancel any online contract within 14 days - without having to name any reasons. But its soo much more expensive here.

So, what is your recommendation how to find a serious Shop around the Salt Lake City area, where I will be staying for holiday later in August?

Is there a way to send you private messages?

Thanks for sharing your story wiht us!

    Greetings from chilly Berlin!

Check that Privacy Policy. They will send all your info all over the place, unless you send in that Opt Out form. And I assume this classifies as a credit request, meaning your FICO score will take a hit. I wouldn't do this if I were planning to apply for a mortgage or some such in the near future.

  • Taxes on irregular income   18 years 5 weeks ago

How does it work if your freelance income is a 2nd job? At what ratio of freelance:salary income should I start paying attention to quarterly payments? I earn anywhere from $20 to $500 extra in a given month.

This is a great overview. I started using an accountant for the first time for 2007 taxes. I was pleasantly surprised by the prepared vouchers. Very convenient.

  • So You Want to be a Landlord? Part I   18 years 5 weeks ago

I have to agree with Section 8 Tenant.

As a long time (over 10 years) landlord, I've seen my fair share of Section 8 tenants. Some were good and some.....

Anyway, I've had two Section 8 tenants that rented from me in my primary residence (duplex) that were great and went on to purchase their own homes. One of them I actually wrote a letter for the bank verifying that she had paid me on time for 2.5 years and that she would be an excellent credit risk. These two tenants were great.

On the other hand, I did have one tenant (once again in my primary residence) that rented from me that sucked the system for all it was worth. She paid me on time every month, but refused to work and did not treat my property as I had hoped she would. She actually had the nerve to tell me one time - as she approached the end point of her Masters Degree - that she used the system for all it was worth and had no regrets about it. Finally, the housing authority told her to "get motivated" and "get a job" which she finally did. She then moved out and into an apartment with her long time boyfriend.

I've also had multiple Section 8 tenants in my other buildings and some were perfect occupants and others were a huge headache. I think my worst Section 8 tenant was a young lady that abandoned the apartment, didn't pay her utility bills, subsequently had her electric shut off and left fresh fish in the fridge. By the time I had legal access to enter the apartment, I thought that I was going to die from the smell and the bugs.

I guess what I am trying to say is that you should treat a tenant with a voucher/assistance no differently than you would any other potential tenant. Prequal them like you would any other tenant. Check their references, sources of income, etc. and go from there. Some will be great tenants, some will turn out bad....just like any other tenant you put in one of your units.

  • How to Sell Your Hair for Cash   18 years 5 weeks ago

yup I read that story, too.  It's pretty sad.

  • How to Sell Your Hair for Cash   18 years 5 weeks ago

I first heard about selling hair in an O. Henry story called the Gift of the Magi or something like that. The woman sells her hair so that she can buy a chain for her husband's pocket watch, only to find that her husband had sold his watch to buy her haircombs. Its a lovely story.

  • Do You Always Keep the Money You Find?   18 years 5 weeks ago

I find a lot of coins on the ground, and I always pick them up, even the pennies. But I don't know how people are finding all these large amounts. Maybe I should be looking in some more lucrative locations!

  • If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?   18 years 5 weeks ago

A bunch of 'smart' people - at least those who think themselves smart - are on the edge of going from wealthy to poor. Think of all the recent nouveau rich made so through real estate. Poor slobs.

Put this in your pipe and smoke it:

25 top percentile of smartest people in China outnumber entire population of North America. Hmm.

  • Getting Something for Nothing – My $25 from Revolution MoneyExchange   18 years 5 weeks ago

Within 20 minutes, I had $45 (initial 25 + 2 referrals). I can't wait till my bank account info is verified, and I can put all that in my checking. I am sending invites to everyone I know. This is great. And if it replaces Paypal? Even better.

You're right that it's really a transition-year issue.  Or rather, a "two transition years" issue.

In my case, last year was actually the transition year--the place I used to work closed in August.

There's a safe-harbor position:  If you send in 100% of what you owed last year, then you're safe.  But that doesn't work for me, because what I owed last year is more than 20 times what I expect to owe this year.  Still, it's always possible that I'll end up earning a lot more in the second half of the year than I've been earning so far.  Obviously, that'd be great.  So, it's nice to know that, if I am so lucky, it wouldn't leave me screwed as far as taxes go.  I can file Schedule AI of form 2210, if I have to.

  • Remove Car Dents Quickly and Cheaply   18 years 5 weeks ago

That is an outrageous comment. That is as outrageous as claiming "liquid car." When liquefied, it would no longer be considered to be wood.

There's no penalty if you underpay for the first time this year. If you are transitioning to freelancing from a regular job, you should have easily paid the required 90% of your liability in withholding from your paychecks. The second year, as long as you pay the amount on your vouchers (your accountant or tax software will create these for you, or you can use a worksheet to make them), you will not owe interest or penalty. As a practical matter, I earmark 20% of my gross for taxes, and that seems to work out well. My husband is a salaried employee and pays through withholdings, so a person with only freelance income should use a higher percentage making sure to cover income tax as well as the full 14% self-employment tax.

  • A Note on Consumer Justice   18 years 5 weeks ago

I had a similar problem with PayPal where they couldn't/wouldn't help get my money back. Fortunately I had used a Credit Card with PP and disputed the PayPal charge with my CC Co. I received the credit to my cc and was notified by PP that they were not too happy that I had done that. So now I always use a CC when using PayPal for paying, even tho they always try to talk me into using the direct Checking Account transfer.

  • Getting Something for Nothing – My $25 from Revolution MoneyExchange   18 years 5 weeks ago

I have found that a few other people have been having problems with registering.  It seems to be due to the verification system that have in place.  It is similar to opening an account at a brick and mortar bank branch.  It comes from a conflict in information (address, Social, phone, etc) that is not matching up.  This is from the Revolution website:

"You might wonder why we ask for certain pieces of information that you may be nervous to share, such as your Social Security Number. We would not ask for any information that was not necessary to enable the security we promise to you. Also, to help the government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, Federal law requires all financial institutions to obtain, verify and record information that identifies each person who opens an account.

With identity theft on the rise, we use your Social Security Number to confirm your identity by cross referencing it against other personal data you provide. This way, if someone were to get a hold of your Social Security Number, a MoneyExchange account could not be set up in your name without knowing your other personal information. So, sometimes it may seem as if you have to share more information about yourself, but in the end it actually protects your financial information to an even greater degree."

Have you changed addresses or phone numbers recently?  Could you have been a victim of fraud and not know it?  Some things to consider as to why they are flagging your account.
