i always take advantage of the free e-file...the IRS offers many options but i like using the same one year after year so my username and password are easy to remember. it's always free (i make so little money, i am way under the maximum income limits) and i have peace of mind. it's easy and any refund gets put automatically into my checking. easy breezy and FREE. and did i mention free? you get my point.
I've finally bowed to the inevitable: with a new one on the way and not nearly enough hours in the days, I'm working with a CPA to file our 2014 taxes.
I would recommend using a tax software instead of hiring a tax consultant. It's really straight forward if you just think through your expenses throughout the year and any significant capital movements.
I'm having them done at H&R Block Premium, the company that is also handling the taxes for my fledgling LLC.
The enrolled agent who is working with me on the latter has gone way above and beyond in the past year: helping me understand what kind of corporation to become, handling my payroll, writing three letters to clear up an IRS claim that I owed money (I didn't, but would probably have caved and paid it after the second letter if I were doing it myself). He has also held my hand (figuratively speaking!) through some other new-business issues.
As a former military member, I always got my taxes done by a discounted tax prep company on base. Now that I am out and newly separated from my husband, I will most likely use H&R Block.
Hey Heather, I have to say I have an H&M sweater that I bought over 6 years ago, and it still looks new. I wear it every fall and winter. I guess it depends on what you buy, and how often you use it. Also, this is a list of things that look expensive but don't cost a lot. I agree, sometimes you have to pay more to get an item that goes beyond just looking good.
Another one to add to the list is "wood stain". Soak #0000 steel wool in apple cider vinegar for a day. This will then create a chemical reaction when mixed with the tanins in wood. Woods with higher tannin levels (oak) will get really dark. Lower tannin level woods (pine) won't darken very much. You can stain a 1200 sq ft home for about $8 (at least that's what I did).
So a big part of how a single income family can get out of debt is to not be a single income family anymore... I'm not sure the headline on here adequately represents their situation.
This is a good list, except the quality of H&M clothes concerns me. Sure, you get a great price, but if they don't last long, then it's not good value. I like the look of their clothes on the hanger, but they all seem to fit me awkwardly. Maybe that's just me though.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us, A.L.S. That's awesome that you have zero student debt left! If you don't mind telling us, how much of your tuition did you finance with a student loan? Also, how many years did it take you to pay it back?
I ask this because I'm sure that your story would be very encouraging for those that still have a balance left!
My friend left a flower crown and a sweet note in my car the other day, so now I want to pay it forward...hence why I'm googling day-brighteners.
I'll be filing my own taxes this year just I have every year since I've had to. I actually enjoy doing it & view it as a chance to review my finances.
We have a friend that is an accountant that gives us good rates
Unfortunately, I file our taxes. I am an accountant after all.
Same as last year, myself using freetaxusa.
Who is filing your taxes this year? Me doing it myself as always.
Did you go this route last year? Yes.
If not, what made you decide to change it up?

We have an accountant. Helps prevent tax rage.

I will use a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteer.

I'm filing my taxes this year same as every year. It's easy enough to handle myself.
My husband is filing our taxes
I always file my own Taxes because they are not complicated!

I love using my student loan website to schedule payments. Mostly I use my check register and my bank statements. I try to avoid using my credit card.
I use Quicken
