  • Common Money-Saving Mistakes That Can Cost Big Bucks   13 years 51 weeks ago

Amen to the point about warehouse clubs not always being a good deal. Buying a 50 pack of check mix at one of these big stores is not necessarily a good deal. When you go to these places, buy specific items that you want and compare to regular retail stores. you may be surprised how much money you are not saving. Another thing that makes me mad about warehouse clubs is the fact that you have to buy a membership for the privilege of shopping in their store.

  • Life Insurance: What to Consider Before Replacing a Policy   13 years 51 weeks ago

Thank you for the very thorough explanation of what to consider when changing life insurance policies. Also, it's important to make certain you are insured by your new life insurance policy before you cancel any existing life insurance plan, so you don't go without life insurance protection for any period of time. Also, make sure to review your life insurance premium and how long the premium is guaranteed to remain the same.

  • Ask the Readers: When Was the Last Time You Cleaned Out Your Wallet?   13 years 51 weeks ago

Despite my wallet being fairly clean, it is still quite large, as I'm a bit of a card hoarder. I have travel cards, frequent purchase cards, credit cards, library cards, etc. in there at a all times. Good thing there isn't a lot of money available to stuff in it because there isn't much room. I last cleaned it out a couple of weeks ago and probably do every few months.

  • Horizon Organic Milk: Is it All Just Lies?   13 years 51 weeks ago

people need to snap out of their SHOPPING HABITS. The food that's mass produced is likely to be bad for us, especially for small children and yet we keep buying it out of convenience and because we don't know any better. Then we are surprised why there's so much CANCER and AUTISM and ALLERGIES... There are many local smaller farms whose milk eggs and meats are readily available, healthy and affordable and they can EVEN DELIVER if you have no time shopping. I found this site: localharvest.com which shows all the places where you can shop around you locally organic, NON-GMO foods. there are also places like certified humane that tell you about local stores with humanely raised live stock. Do your homework and keep YOUR FAMILY HEALTHY.

  • The Real Deal: What to Expect When Starting Your Own Business   13 years 51 weeks ago

Thank you for the Great Advice. I'm in the first of year of my businesses, I started two new business at the same time and I've experienced a lot of the points mentioned here. At some stage I thought maybe I'm getting to negative to continue, I'm not getting enough rest, I have no time off, no time for myself or any one else and the daily ups and downs made it scary to go on. And all this time I thought I'm doing something wrong, maybe it's just me. But now I know I'm not because my business has not been costing me money, it's been generating income from month two. All the other ups and downs are being experienced by businesses world wide, it's just the way it goes.

I would love to write and article about what to expect when rendering services to customers on a daily basis, because I've not been in this industry before and was shocked at some peoples behavior. I can tell some hair raising stories now and I would like to warn any new entrepreneurs about the pit falls, the good and the bad of the industry. I'd also like other to feel that however abnormal the customers behavior is, it's really the minority of customers who misbehave. But it happens, you can arrive on site and find customers drunk, half naked, Abusive, drugged, sometimes stone cold sober and abusive, physically and verbally. At least now I can look back and laugh about most of the incidents, but it can get very stressful at times.

One thing I can say is that I have a great support group of family and friends that's done this before, they have been there for me every step of the way with advice and help and it's priceless.

Always knew it would be hard work, never realized just how hard it gets! I have new respect for business owners today.

As I read this today, you were dead on. Americans must educate themselves on saving energy or they will be giving it to the fuel companies as we have steadily seen.

  • Great Financial Gifts for Children   13 years 51 weeks ago

Although being at the very expensive end of the 'Children's Gifts' scale I could not disagree with one of our clients who gave his son a 1oz Krugerrand for his 10th birthday.

'Sonny' may not fully appreciate the full scale of this gift yet but there is little doubt in my mind that he will be very pleased indeed one day in the future over the 'little heavy coin' that his Daddy gave him.

  • The mystery shopping scam that could cost you a fortune.   13 years 51 weeks ago

Same here...email from Victoria Moore via Careerbuilder.I emailed them and got a reply almost immediately with info on their services. It was a tad evasive. My instincts tell me this is a scam. For 1:Noone pays $2000 a month salary without meeting you 2.When I Googled Gapbusters.com the site doesn't come up.3.A reputable employer will send you address, phone numbers and company info in a valid email.4.They are claiming to be in the UK, if such a big company, why no US headquarters? I have sent them my phone number twice, but they haven't called me yet.If they do,it should be interesting.

I need a vacation. LOL! Great article. The most important aspect of getting and staying energetic is proper sleep and being active. When I don't get enough sleep or even if I wake up abruptly, it makes it hard for me the rest of the day. In terms of staying active, it's really use it or lose it.

  • The false goal of maximizing investment returns   13 years 51 weeks ago

Always enjoy your articles, Philip! I think they're some of the most sensible things I read in the PF world. One of my best friends just posted about his -8.8% portfolio loss on Facebook. Said he'd been trying to "maximize returns" through an "aggressive strategy' his advisor recommended. Ersh... And in a year where the markets have done fairly well?! Just to rub it in I mentioned that with inflation, he was probably looking at more like -10%. I veered him toward a conservative index-investing based couch potato approach. Hope he heeds the advice and moves at least some of it toward that way of thinking.

Keep the good ones coming, buddy--I'm a fan!

  • Foods You Can Grow in the Comfort of Your Home   13 years 51 weeks ago

Growing fruits/vegetables indoors yields a small crop. I did this for years in Western PA - Meyer Lemons, limes, tomatoes, herbs, etc. Unless you have grow lights (expensive), you get very little for the money you spend on pots, potting medium and fertilizer. Basically it's a hobby, really not a huge money saver.
