  • 10 Safest Cities in America from Natural Disasters   13 years 13 weeks ago

I'm a born and raised Erieite and your opinion of this city is completely based on how you perceive it. I'm a huge hunter and fisherman and people travel from hundreds of miles to fish the uncountable creeks for trout and spend hundreds of dollars on getting both hunting and fishing licenses. Yea the winters can be rough but as a 17 year snowboarder, i look forward to the 2-3' of snow we get at a time. It's unfortunate that the crime rate has been rising drastically but it's usually in the same crappy part of town, so don't live in that area, pretty simple. To call Erie the armpit of America is unfair to us. You ever been to Jersey city??? I sure have and couldn't wait to get back to Erie. Erie is a great all around place and I love calling it home.

  • Evolve Your Money Management Beyond the Budget   13 years 13 weeks ago

Budget is one of those words that people do not like. It implies that they need to be frugal and stick to a strict regime. I like this new approach, which is still budgeting but just with a different approach that makes people feel less confined when managing their money.

I agree wholeheartedly! The fact that we get four seasons of weather makes Erie a great place to live. I think we appreciate warm, sunny days more than people in areas where they are the norm.

We have an annual trip to Holiday World theme park with friends where we stay at their campgrounds. We enjoy the theme park during the day and then hang out at the campground at night with our friends and smores!!

All of these places are beautiful. I am originally from Pittsburgh and have learned a lot about Erie growing up. I'd definitely agree it is a safe place to live.

The only one I have done is the attic insulation. My father-in-law and I spent a day taking care of it, renting a machine and blowing in an extra few inches. I probably would not have done that without his expertise, but if you have to pick one that's do-able, I would say that one fits

  • Two Dozen Uses For Toothpaste (Aside From Cleaning Your Teeth)   13 years 13 weeks ago

All that I got is this blue gel toothpaste. I've used the toothpaste and an eraser pad on my chrome kitchen sink and on the counters. The chrome is gleaming and the counters are really clean and fresh after using it. I have used it on the stove top also and in the bathroom on the sink counters in the bathtub. I've found that it's worked quite well

One of the things I would like to mention is that they didn't take in consideration the smaller cities or town nearby. Westfield, NY - 20 miles from Erie, PA. Great place to live, grape farms, fruit farms, antique shops, small hometown Main Street. Excellent school system. Located on Lake Erie, we have easy access to Interstate 90, 20 min drive to Erie Airport. An hour or so drive to Buffalo, Cleveland and Pittsburgh airports. We have very light snowfall, as we are on the lake and we enjoy green grass, colorful foliage and beautiful snow. Love the small towns around the Erie, PA area. Come check us out!

Not every child needs to see an orthodontist, and while palate spreading must be done young, braces young just makes treatment more expensive and time-consuming.

I definitely agree. We have stumbled into all kinds of cute towns on road trips, often determined by the hours we are willing to drive in a day or a rained out camping trip. North Carolina was an especially fun place to do this a few years ago.

More recently, we were in Europe and decided a little more intentionally to stay at a casa rurale in Spain, which we got to by commuter train as opposed to main train lines to the more touristy beach towns. It was the highlight of our trip -- incredible service, suggestions for day trips from our wonderful hosts, and such a unique window into another culture. Our favorite things were just wandering around the countryside and surrounding villages for a day, and heading to a ski resort in summer and climbing the breathtaking mountains. Looking forward to more adventures like these. Thanks for the reminder and inspiration!

  • How to Avoid (and Treat) Cold Sores   13 years 13 weeks ago

I am so tired of cold sores. I've suffered from them since I was a child and they seem to have got worse in the past year since I started using Lysine. I typically get one at least every 3 weeks now and have these permanent lumps whenever these cold sores disappear. I also have these permanent lumps underneath my lips but not quite on the gum and it is very stressful which only causes more cold sores. I'm running out of ideas, I use Zovirax as soon as I feel my cold sore coming on but I'm seriously getting tired of having cold sore after cold sore. I even went ot the doctor a few months ago and they gave me acyclovir tablets which last 2 weeks but wouldn't give me a more permanent solution.

  • 8 Ways to Buy Jeans on the Cheap   13 years 13 weeks ago

I've never paid more that $15 for a pair of jeans or dress pants, and I have brands like DNKY and Tommy Hilfiger in my closet. I just stack sales and haunt the super discount racks. :)

This is one of the hidden advantages of homeschooling!

  • 8 Ways to Buy Jeans on the Cheap   13 years 13 weeks ago

TJ Maxx often has designer jeans at greatly reduced prices, and if you're really lucky you can find them on the clearance rack to boot. Also, second hand stores like Buffalo Exchange or Arizona Trading Company lets you trade in old clothes (provided they are somewhat in fashion and re-sellable), so you can often do a trade and get new jeans or other clothing items for free. :)

  • Should Your Next Car Be Electric?   13 years 13 weeks ago

Well, I am a recent convert to electric (I am leasing a Nissan Leaf) and so far it works great for my purposes - commuting and short trips around town. I can charge it enough overnight in a regular 120V outlet in the garage, but there is a free charging station at a mall near my house I can use if needed. We are leasing it for two years since we weren't sure if it was something we wanted to commit to long term. My insurance premium went up slightly (< $100/year), but we traded in a small SUV and my husband is now driving my Elantra, so we will see a decent reduction in our gasoline costs. Plus the maintenance over the term of the lease is minimal - tire rotation and brake checks periodically.

I understand the environmental concerns as well - is driving a car charged with coal-powered electricity really better than driving a small, fuel efficient gasoline-powered car? I have no idea; there are tons of factors to consider, several of which you all mentioned. I have tried to limit my driving in general in years past anyway so I burn less gas and get more exercise, and I wish more communities like mine (Midwestern suburbia) had been planned in a way to facilitate less driving.

Me, too! I live right just north of Wilmington, NC and I'll take my hurricanes any day over tornados, wildfires, earthquakes, etc. At least we have plenty of warning!

  • Choosing the Right Mortgage Loan: 15 or 30 Years?   13 years 13 weeks ago

I chose a 30-year mortgage, after doing days and days of intensive math about the benefits of investments and inflation over that of paying a mortgage off quickly. I have a table with the numbers for those who are interested (http://giddingsplaza.com/2013/05/13/part-2-get-rid-of-your-debt-today-an...). Any other kind of debt is poison, but mortgages, because of their low interest rates and long-term nature, are a great way to free up your money to use for other investing.
