  • First-Time Home Buyer? Consider These 5 Cities   10 years 7 weeks ago

Is this correct? We just sold our home in Tampa, FL for 150% more than we paid for it a couple years ago, as it is a hot sellers' market for homes under $200k right now. There were news articles about how the prices have been rising drastically in Tampa the the past couple years - 20% just in the month before we decided to sell our home..

  • 10 Important Signs That Your Job Sucks   10 years 7 weeks ago

Your spot on Sylvia. You may have put it more eloquently though. :) We are all slaves on the plantation trying to buy our freedom. Each of us thinking that the next gadget/holiday/car/clothes/movie/beer will set us free, when in fact it serves to enslave us further.

My job is a job I took out of desperation when the mining boom ended. I have two master degrees but I am doing a job a guy with a couple of years experience could easily do. It is brain numbing and demoralising. With tax changes I am earning less than what I started on two years ago. To top this of I don't even get a pay review to keep up with CPI.

Life is too short to be enslaved like this... A job change will "fix" things for a short time only... Sadly... :(

  • Is Pet Health Insurance Worth It?   10 years 7 weeks ago

It sounds exactly like people insurance companies. That is exactly my experience with them. It is all "buyer beware". If the word insurance is involved, expect to be cheated and sold a bill of goods.

I'm a huge fan of freezing soups, rice, cooked chicken, and sauces. Rice does really well if you portion it out while its still warm and wrap with plastic wrap. I think it traps more of the moisture, and re-steams when you microwave it later. These little packets don't take up much space and are a great supplement to leftover meals made during the week.

Soups and sauces I store in the individual, round ziploc containers (they stack like a charm!) or freezer bags if I'm running low on space - if you freeze them flat you can then store them vertically. Lunch is a meal I often forget about, so taking some premade soup out in the morning will defrost by noon. A simple way to ensure I don't eat out from desperation.

I do occasionally when I make casseroles or soups. Most of the time though I prefer to eat fresh foods.

  • The 8 Best Pets for Frugal Animal Lovers   10 years 7 weeks ago

What about cockatiels or budgies? They are pretty low maintenance compared with cats and dogs as they only need millet and seeds or pellets. You do need to keep doors and windows closed or covered and a cage.

  • You Don't Need a Retirement Plan — You Need a Financial Independence Plan   10 years 7 weeks ago

Don't forget that anything you plan and save may be knocked off the chart by unforeseeable life changes. I had three major tech job losses in 13 years due to companies going belly-up or outsourcing, and had to eat my fat 401(k) to pay my bills. I finally landed a stable job, at a 60% pay cut, and it has taken me 18 years to get back to my former income level. Then there was a divorce and having to move, and then there was the recession of 2008. I'm three years past retirement age now, looking to retire this year for health reasons and with very little in savings. It's not because I wasn't smart or didn't plan. But the more you can put away early, the greater your chance of survival when life dumps you on your tail.

  • How to Look Rich Without Having Much Money   10 years 8 weeks ago

    SMDH.

Saying "one of the top 5 Ivys in the country" seems quite silly. There are only 8 Ivys. This reminds me of the super-gunners back in law school that would brag that they were in the "top 100 class rank" meaning they were well below average.

You say that your child goes to "U of XXX" however there is only one Ivy that has "University" as a first word--University of Pennsylvania. Are you embarrassed of where your child goes to school? It really is not that bad of a school--almost 30% of their parents make over $250k a year--that means that at least one in three of their parents can afford at least a rent controlled apartment in Manhattan right?

As to the "one of the top 5 Ivys" well, I guess I can concede that point--even a weasel ambulance chaser like myself squirms with this rather prejudicial use of language. . .

According to US News undergrad schools are ranked: 1) Princeton 2) Harvard 3) Yale Multiple ties for 4th including) Columbia--Then there are a whole bunch of schools that are non-Ivy with many ties and THEN FINALLY 9) University of Pennsylvania.

No one believes that University of Pennsylvania is a bad school (except the people that go to any of the schools that beat it.) I don't know many "rich" kids though that go there.

I don't think this qualifies. I just cook enough for 2-3 meals, including left-overs.

  • 11 Simple Rules of Excellent Houseguest Etiquette   10 years 8 weeks ago

Great advice. As someone who hosts a lot, I'm glad you mentioned asking the host if they want the beds stripped. I don't and it has nothing to do with stains (the mattress is new). I just don't like having to look at the bare mattress until I have time to wash the sheets and remake the bed. I don't usually have time to do it as soon as the guests leave.

The app is a great way to start a diversified portfolio and easily save for long term wealth. The fee's are only 1.00 per month which is NOTHING compared to normal trades. Plus, I leave it on auto round up and since I put in about 50.00 a month, it's well worth it.
