  • Frugal Changes You Don't Want to Make — But Can   13 years 41 weeks ago

Not if you get a water bottle with a filter. I just bought a brita water bottle that has a filter in it because I was tired of buying bottled water but the tap water at my house tasted terrible. The bottle was about 8 bucks with a filter already included, and there replacement filters are about 6 bucks, but you only have to buy one about every 2 months depending on usage. I'm never buying bottled water again.

  • How to check if your mortgage statement is correct   13 years 41 weeks ago

There is an automatic online arm mortgage audit system called checkMyARMonline. This site recalculates your variable interest rate based on your mortgage note information - basically double-checking all the interest charges and monthly payments on your mortgage, past and future.

The website looks up the monthly index rate for your adjustable rate mortgage and handles all the complex math, rounding, lookback, rate floor and ceiling, etc. All you do is type 10 - 15 pieces of info from your mortgage note into a secure online form. They even offer the service free to homeowners facing foreclosure. This free foreclosure help can delay or even stop foreclosure proceedings, if the homeowner finds an interest rate error in their mortgage's servicing history.

  • 10 DIY Dog Toys You Can Make for Pennies   13 years 41 weeks ago

    I love this post!
The snack sock worked a treat for my puppy, he is teething at the moment, so anything to encourage his mouthing else wear is welcomed! I've spent all morning making the toys you've talked about in this post and my puppy has been amused for hours! Much better than the pricey toys you can get at the pet shop I haven't spent a penny!
    Thank you so much :)

Bundling media services is a crock. You don't need cable TV and it is without a doubt the biggest waste of money of the modern century. I know a few individuals who pay close to $200 a month for a multi-channel cable TV package and this is with a bundled package. What a crock if ever I heard one.

Save your money and instead get a DVD player or a media device like an on demand box.

Clear nail polish can be used on keyboards. The polish can be applied to the keys so that the lettering won't rub off after a while.

Mostly done. There are a couple of supplies that are supposed to go on mega-sale next week that I'm waiting to get. We've picked up some new clothes to fill in wardrobe gaps or that were on a good clearance, plus new shoes and glasses. I try to avoid buying all new wardrobes at back-to-school because of cost. Instead we shop for whatever's needed every other month or so.

  • Wardrobe Staples Every Man Should Own   13 years 41 weeks ago

Oh gosh. Everything I hate about bland, conservative male American clothes. Nothing, absolutely nothing, is less sexy than chinos and a polo shirt - except a buttoned shirt with an undershirt. Sorry dude... I'm British and normally very polite - but I like men's clothes to have personality!

  • 30 Signs That You Were Raised by Frugal Parents   13 years 41 weeks ago

I remember my grandmother save the little jelly containers from McDonald's- she worked there. One day I opened her fridge and there was the little jelly container with about a teaspoon of corn in it! We used that little bit in some soup. My grandparents were Italian and they made soup called "Jump in the Boat" and it literally was a clean out the fridge kind of soup. My grandparents didn't throw anything away. So the soup would have veggies, leftover meat, tomato base, and we ate it with hearty crusty bread. I make it sometimes and the family thinks we're eating gourmet!

  • Naturally Get Rid of Ants in Your Kitchen   13 years 41 weeks ago

I had an under-the-sink coffee maker that I had not used for many months. One day I took out the pot and the drawer underneath to clean. Thank heaven I looked before making coffee. It was not only full of ants, but was packed full of eggs. I guess they thought my coffee maker was an ant maternity ward. lol. I threw out the maker after washing the mess down the drain. Aweful

  • Nonfat dry milk--no longer a frugal alternative   13 years 41 weeks ago

I remember when it was half the cost per gallon to make compared to buying whole milk. You could save a lot. I guess the manufactures put profits ahead of the poorer folks that really do need to pinch a dollar. Of course, when I was little, milk was in short supply and we were on ration cards from the government. We had no flour or cake mix to bake a cake for my younger brother's birthday. He was two when he got his first cake. There were ways to save then, but not anymore. If there is a hole in the fence, you bet the profiteers will close it.

  • Ask the Readers: Have You Finished Your Back-to-School Shopping?   13 years 41 weeks ago

Since we homeschool, I shop for deals year around. I buy "Back To School" specials in the fall, (The best for office suppies: paper, pens, usb etc) Holiday clearance in the winter (best for art materials, craft kits, clothes & stationary), In the spring & summer, we take road trips & stop by consignment shops & yard sales while traveling though the states. We found super deals on textbooks, art supplies, homeschool workbooks etc.. while doing this. Our kids love getting a new book or an educational science kit as a souvenir of their travels. When my homeschool closet gets too full from all my bargains, I clear it out and donate to The Boy Scouts & to the Church's Youth groups. By doing it this way, I stay basicly full of all needed materials & the money is spread out over the year, not breaking the bank at the begining of the school year.

  • 15 Alternative Uses for Nail Polish   13 years 41 weeks ago

PER #9- NAIL POLISH IS "NOT" NON-TOXIC UNLESS YOU USE A NON-TOXIC BRAND!
    9. Use as a Band-Aid

When you’ve got a small cut — paper cut, hangnail, or other minute scratch — and you can’t find a Band-Aid, use clear nail polish as an alternative adhesive.

"Nail polish is nontoxic, and it works nearly the same as more expensive liquid adhesives."
