  • 8 Alternatives to Cable TV That Will Keep You Entertained   13 years 41 weeks ago

I dont know if other cable tv providers do this ~ but Time Warner will discontinue service for one to six months . I think this was first meant for customers who were on extended vacations and leaves . If the cable box and hardware is kept with the possible intent of resuming service ~ there is a charge of about five dollars .

It's worth remembering that for males, khakis and a blue oxford cloth shirt are suitable attire for any occasion. Occcasionally, a tweed (or in summer, poplin) jacket needs to be added.

  • Should You Become a Landlord Instead of Selling Your Home?   13 years 41 weeks ago

I've read a few of the comments on here, and I have to present a different side of the coin. My wife and I actually love being landlords. Luckily, we live in the same town as our rental houses so we can keep a fairly close eye on them if need be. However, when we moved out of our first house, we kept it as a rental. It has worked out brilliantly for us. We bought a second rental house as well.

The biggest benefit that we see (mentioned in the original post) is that other people are building our wealth for us. They are paying the payments. They are paying the taxes. They are paying the utilities. It is a great way to slowly build your net worth.

Sure, we have to put a little bit of work in every once in a while. When something breaks, you have to fix it. Also, you definitely need to do a good job of screening your renters. If you do that, you should have very minor fixes between tenants. Another thing that we did was to buy houses fairly nice houses. That way, we could set the rents high enough so that we could weed out many of the potentially troublesome tenants simply because they couldn't afford to live there.

We are not wealthy. We don't have deep pockets. Granted, we live in a smaller community (20,000 population) as opposed to a city where everyone rents. Still, our experience being landlords has been great. In a few years, we will own the houses outright...and we will only have paid a few thousand dollars out of our own pockets. The rest was paid by our tenants. You can't beat that if you are looking for ways to easily increase your wealth!

    Hey, Carrie,

Do you have any tips for screening tenants? Services you used or processes that you found particularly helpful?

  • 15 Ways to Have a Frugal Friday   13 years 41 weeks ago

If more people carpooled to work not only would they save a TON of money on gas each month, but it would be so much better for our environment. I love that you included that tip because I don't think people even think of it as a possibility because we're all so attached to our cars as a means of transportation. It's so true that everyone wants to "treat" themselves at the end of the week. The fact that I get paid every OTHER Friday usually helps me resist, at least every other week.

  • 9 Benefits of Being a Morning Person   13 years 41 weeks ago

Waking up early while in the moment seems like a drag, but the hardest part is just getting out of bed. Once you're up, you can usually muster the energy to get your day going- and that always feels good. Even just feeling more productive puts me in a good mood! I love getting up in the morning and getting my workout for the day done and over with, this leaves the rest of the entire day to get work done, and then relax.

  • The Parable of The Flat-Screen TV   13 years 41 weeks ago

Oh yeah, I know this feeling. In 2003, maybe 2004, I simply had to have a plasma TV. 42". Now, that was at least partially for space - the way my house was built there was no room for a normal TV without blocking off one entire route through the main space, and we were tired of having that be the case with our previous TV - but it being SO early adoption, that plasma was $4400. Whoof. My 20s were an opulent time compared to today.

When it started dying in 2008 or 9, I sold it, for a paltry tenth of its original cost. And bought a 46" LCD for just under 2k. TV and gaming consoles, though, were a huge part of our home life then. Nowadays, not so much. I'd gladly sell the 46" and just use my wife's 32" in its place (which isn't even being used at all), but she does still love the big TV for watching movies on.

  • A Guide to Becoming a Part-Time Bicycle Commuter   13 years 41 weeks ago

I missed the bicycle culture when I moved home from Germany, so my Dad suprised me with dusting off my old hand-me-down bike and outfitting it for riding to and from class on my university campus. It had a basket, a headlamp and a bell. In germany the bell signals a biker is coming up behind you and you should step off the path - but no one on campus back in the US seemed to know what it meant - I ended up having to shout "Excuse me! Excuse me!" the whole time before sadly giving up. Now I can't wait to have a job close enough o home to try it again - thanks!

  • The Parable of The Flat-Screen TV   13 years 41 weeks ago

I'm 100% sure that Dan now has envy every time the 52" models go on sale for $500. Sadly, when you jump on the bandwagon at the start, your model has little resale value a few years later. So, he can't even make a decent amount on selling it to upgrade. His plasma would be without all the bells and whistles and SD card slots and USB ports and probably only 2 HDMI ports and... and...

  • Escape Student Loan Debt — Slowly   13 years 41 weeks ago

Here is a small fact they don't tell you...

After 20 years what is forgive is reported to the IRS as INCOME. You are then charged for the income tax on it.

I got conned into the bullshit that is college. I didn't get anything out of it that I could not have gotten from reading a library book. If I had it to do all over again, I never would have gone.

  • Passing for Middle Class   13 years 41 weeks ago

Thanks everyone, for all the good comments.

I've gotten so many comments over the years on previous posts, that it didn't occur to me to go into much details as to why it might be worth passing for middle class, so I'm glad some of the commentors have stepped up and covered that.

Children, in particular, have a strong need to "fit in," and although you also want to teach them to represent your values, giving them a bit of cover will often be appreciated. Although obviously you wouldn't want to marry someone who didn't share your values, somebody in the dating scene might want to have a bit of control over how and when they reveal their frugal habits. There are plenty of managers who might hesitate to hire someone whose lifestyle is too far out of the middle-class norms.

None of those are good reasons to change the way you live to match mainstream values, but they might well be reasons to make minor tweaks that let your llfestyle appear a little more normal.

  • The Parable of The Flat-Screen TV   13 years 41 weeks ago

Thank for this analysis! I love it. We have two old-technology TVs and have been waiting restlessly for one of them to break down before we buy a new HD flatscreen model. We have cash that could be used for the purchase, but whenever I get hungry for a crisper picture, I wait one more day and one more day, putting off the shopping trip. Afterall the TVs work. One of these old TVs we actually acquired free as a hand-me-down when a relative displaced it with a flatscreen. I'm going to save this analysis to reread whenever I get particularly antsy to spend without need. More such analyses, please.

  • Home Exchanges: Free Accommodations With Perks   13 years 41 weeks ago

We're doing a home exchange right now, or as Craigslist calls it, house swapping. I started looking for a place in multiple cities on Craigslist around April for a July or August swap. Definitely putting several feelers out there was key, and posting your own place, too. I had about five responses, all but two of which just sort of fizzled out. We eventually got with some great people in Ithaca, NY and the experience couldn't have worked out more perfectly for our first time! Lovely home, great location and the home's owners left us all kinds of local insider info which meant we got a great head start figuring out the best parts of the city and surrounding countryside to explore!

  • United World College: Study Abroad For Way Less Than You Think   13 years 41 weeks ago

I think your son would do well to apply for a UWC place, the primary reason being to put some distance between himself and his controlling parents. He may find the opportunity to develop independently rather than having to follow the carefully crafted course you appear to have laid out for him. You clearly have no concept of the UWC ideals or mission. This is not about doing projects or activities 'carefully selected' by your parents because they think that they make you 'look good on paper' and might open the 'right doors' for you. The child that turns up for selection with this mindset would frankly struggle compared to the outstanding independently-minded, self-motivated, diverse students who get chosen. Young people who have been encouraged to question and challenge existing conventions and who choose their own path (which may include, if and when, to use the odd 'profanity'!).

Also, are you really asking in all seriousness if UWC students are segregated into homogeneous groups because you think this might suit his all-boys catholic school background? Keep him safely away from any unwelcome outside influences? Oh dear - you really don't get it at all....

  • Armor Etch can be a cheap fix for your scratched eyeglasses   13 years 41 weeks ago

I disagree that putting "new lenses in your existing frames...can be a HUGE money-saver" that's exactly what I wanted to do this time around (because my lenses were so smudged from crappy anti-reflective application) and was told they'd practically be the same cost as the particular special they were running. I was shocked that there wasn't more of a discount but they're out to make money and I have to have glasses so they've got you by the horns. After refusing to buy new glasses, I finally tried Armor Etch and it worked like a dream...my glasses are like new...wish I'd researched a home fix sooner.
