  • How to Make Moonshine   13 years 40 weeks ago

    Sugarwash,

A small can of paste is fine.

By the looks of the direction, they only give you one amount of sugar to keep the confusion down. It waste sugar if you do the 14% and will have some left over sweetness. Try the taste test, that should tell you.

  • 7 Reasons Your E-mail Pitches Are Failing   13 years 40 weeks ago

Great article! Some emails are indeed ignored or they just go to spam/trash because it sounds pushy. Pitches should be in the perfect timing. Pitches should sound like a "need" instead of a want. Your product should be the "solution to the customers' problem" rather than another addition to their problem (expense).

I concur, being frugal is the only way to keep more of what you earn. It sounds simplistic but it is the truth.

  • Extreme Couponing? 5 Reasons Why I’ll Pass.   13 years 40 weeks ago

The greediness and complete disregard of the shelf-sweepers is insane. I saw one with mustard, the woman swept every single bottle off the shelf. Her husband tried to interject, asking if maybe they didn't need so many, that maybe she could leave some for someone else? She cackled and said "if they wanted mustard they should have gotten here before I did"

Really makes me want to punch couponers like that in the face, and I am not an angry person :P

  • Make Your DVD Player Region-Free in Seconds   13 years 40 weeks ago

I went to the site to check my portable DVD player ( Philips PET741B/37), followed the instructions but it didn't work. The instructions indicated that i should
go to settings, then preference, then click next, next , next till i find the region and click zero.. there is no region under the preference.. it's just audio, subtitle, disc menu , parental and default..

  • Life Without a Microwave   13 years 40 weeks ago

My thoughts... everything's better without a microwave... fresh coffee from a french press (so you just boil some water on the stove), fresh popcorn popped in a pot, leftovers "nuked" on the stove or the oven or toaster oven, etc.

I would like to add, that when I defrost my meat with cold water, you DON'T have to waste all that water. Just do it in a big bucket/pot in the sink (or use a spotter in the sink). Then walk the water outside to give to your plants or the grass or to use on watering indoor plants... It will thank you. :)

  • Supermarket Shopping for Savers: 6 Ways to Avoid Their Tricky Traps   13 years 40 weeks ago

The supermarket scams are getting out of control ever since that couponing show! They're determined to make somebody pay for all of the freebies that the extreme couponers got over the years, I guess. In the couponing show, they mention that you should compare prices using the PER UNIT cost listed on the shelf tag in most stores. Well, I caught my local grocery trying to find a way around this...and it made me SOOOO MAD! What they did was put an incorrect, less expensive per unit price on the tag for the store brand vanilla ice cream. The numbers weren't making sense in my head, so I took out a calculator, and low & behold! The brand name vanilla ice cream was actually cheaper, but they didn't expect customers to check the accuracy of per unit price. It was SO VERY obvious that they fraudulently put the wrong per unit price in there! I mean, usually it is calculated by a computer, so basically they had to override the calculation. I let that manager know that it was wrong & that I DID NOT appreciate them trying to take advantage of loyal customers.

  • 15 Ways to Have a Frugal Friday   13 years 40 weeks ago

Just a heads up - you assume that Friday is the end of the work week. What about employees at Hospitals, Prisons, or Fire Stations - just to name a few - who have rotating weekends, i.e. Monday/Tuesday, Tuesday/Wednesday, etc........
My husband and I make it a game to incorporate the tips you've mentioned, plus a few more, on any given day of the week.

  • Should You Become a Landlord Instead of Selling Your Home?   13 years 40 weeks ago

This is how we see it as well. We are renting a place, but we have our own place that we are renting out to some other family. One would ask, why are you still renting if you already have your own home? That is because we earn profits with that kind of arrangement. The place we are renting is nearer to our kids' school and nearer to almost every establishment one needs. We save on gas because we can walk to anywhere we need to go. Our own house is in the same city but farther than the kids' school and the city center, so you need to use a car to go some place. We rent out our house for twice the amount we pay for the house we are renting, so we both save and earn from this arrangement.

Still, we are not planning to stay in this rented house forever. We are just waiting for an opportunity to buy a house in this area.

  • The Parable of The Flat-Screen TV   13 years 40 weeks ago

I made the same mistake with the LCD TV that I bought more than a year ago. We just moved into our new house, and I was really excited about having a new TV. I bought it on installment, so it was more expensive than it's usual retail price. A few months after, the exact same TV is being sold at a cheaper price - at a rate that I can actually afford to buy it in cash. :(

  • 9 Benefits of Being a Morning Person   13 years 40 weeks ago

Exactly! I get so much more done at night than I do during the day. Once 7:00 pm or so hits, I become more motivated to get chores done, do my freelance work, go shopping, etc.

I've tried to be a morning person before, and my productivity and energy levels go way down, and I usually get very little accomplished. Not everyone is wired to be a morning person or even be productive during daytime hours.

  • 9 Benefits of Being a Morning Person   13 years 40 weeks ago

It hard for me to be a morning person which I don't think I ever was. I like to be a morning person so that I can get all of my important things out of the way and relax throughout the day. Since Januray of this year I have been working a full time overnight job that is so stressful and it drain my body completely out to where I sleep the whole day and up all night. I even have another part time job where I am working in the day time and it just causing me more stress but I need them both to survive.

  • The Parable of The Flat-Screen TV   13 years 40 weeks ago

Buying a cheap iron at a yard sale, with a frayed cord...turn it on and immediately smelled smoke, it almost burnt my house down, worse $10 i ever spent!

  • 9 Benefits of Being a Morning Person   13 years 40 weeks ago

Great article. Three things I'll add:

Scheduling doctor and dentist appointments at the beginning of the day is more efficient. If a doctors falls behind his schedule, everyone's appointment is pushed back. If you are the first patient of the day, you are often seen within 10 minutes of arrival. In other words, an 8:30 appointment is an 8:30 appointment but a 3:00 appointment may turn into a 3:45 appointment.

I learned when working with orders in a machine shop that it was prudent to check the status of my projects with the machinist when he started his day at 8:00. An unexpected benefit was I arrived an hour before my boss and coworkers -- and I had a block of time with no distractions to go through my e-mail and plan my day. I cannot tell you how much an uninterrupted hour at the start of the day means to getting things done. Plus, if you're the one who thoughtfully starts the coffee, you quickly become an office favorite.

Finally, a piece of advice from a doctor friend who did sleep studies: get up at the same time every day, including weekends. If Sunday is your lazy day, get out of bed and then take a nap in another hour but get your butt out of bed! This advice got me through my night shifts but now that I work "normal hours" I haven't needed an alarm clock in over a decade. Sleeping late on Saturday and Sunday is just a subtle way to keep your body clock from setting a rhythm, hence the Monday morning feeling when you've suddenly altered "the schedule."
