  • Health Insurance Costs Too High? Alternative Not Pretty   17 years 9 weeks ago

Our health insurance system and health care is just terrible. Take a look at this article which appeared in the NY Times today (03/01/09): http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/02/health/02scans.html?hp

It shows how bad even our hospital test equipment is. And it is not only the MRIs and the scanning machines. It is more than that. We pay so much for defective tests and scans done on poor machines. It is pathetic!

Also take a look at the chart by WHO. http://dll.umaine.edu/ble/U.S.%20HCweb.pdf

The US compared to other countries has one of the worst patient satisfaction, the highest infant mortality rate, one of the lowest expectancy rates when compared to other industrialized nations (24), and the most expensive health care system of any country! Not only that, the survey was done 10 years ago. Since then our health care system has gotten much worse to the point it is almost in a chaotic state.

The person who wrote the original article is a fool thinking we have a fair or OK system as she seems to imply. Our health care system is in shambles.

I am also a victim of the health care system. One third of my income goes to pay for health insurance even though I am healthy 50 year old man. And the worse is that even when I need to visit a doctor, I endup having to pay almost for everything from my own pocket due to my $7,000 deductible. It is big scam. I agree!

I did check out their site briefly, but was wondering how easily it would build up. Six thousand dollars is certainly significant. Thanks for chiming in with the info.

If you bulk up on non-perishables when they're on sale, and/or do a couple weeks' shopping via Peapod, you should make it to the $100 minimum easy.

The cost of the delivery fee may well be equal to the amount of extra off-list items I see and put in my cart when I visit the store in person, so I would consider the fee somewhat negligible ;) Yes, we always should stick to our lists, but "oh look, X is on sale and I've always wanted to try X, so let me grab one or two..."

honestly i think cable in my city sucks! so maybe once or twice there's a good movie on tv but I had cable just for ONE tv show! It wasn't worth it. I can easily watch the show on the company's website for free. The same movies keep playing over and over again. I mean wtf? I have all these channels and nothing is new or interesting! I'm a very open person to: history, all movies that are interesting and have a good plot, art, etc... Nothing really impressed me. The cable company here is a monopoly since 3 out of 4 (excluding myself) tenants on my floor have other channels except me why? because when I called the company they said "Your area doesn't qualify for Direct Tv"

Myscha, If you aren't familiar with Upromise, and have a child for whom you are saving for college, you MUST join Upromise.

In 7 years, with very little effort at all, I've saved nearly $6,000 for my son. Just by shopping online though their site, and registering my grocery store cards with them.

Works even better if you have 2-3 other people ( single friends, Aunts/Uncles, etc ) also contributing to your child's account.

  • Credit Scores Across the Country: Which Third are You In?   17 years 9 weeks ago

The mention that people with a high credit score will have a credit score is so true. These individuals have a good credit score for a reason and usually have good credit habits.

  • That "What if you knew you were going to die" question   17 years 9 weeks ago

....But if a doctor tells me I have 24 hours to live, I'm ridiculously limited. It would take at least 12 hours to get to any of these paradise locations, and I don't want to spend half of my last day on a plane. So I'm stuck within a small radius around the doctor's office. Unless I was on holiday in Hawaii when I was diagnosed, I'm pretty limited, hedonistically speaking.

In any case, it's always about more than hedonism, isn't it? Because surely, the most pleasurable thing would be to get high on a load of illicit compounds (presumably)? If you just wanted pleasure, why not just do that for 24 hours? No worries about any physical consequences, you're dead tomorrow anyway!

Or maybe you'd be more altruistic, perhaps if your friends and family knew you only had 24 hours left, they'd want to spend them with you.

But there's the fallacy of the question, as someone mentioned above. A decision you make with 24 hours of life left isn't really translatable to a longer life, because you don't have to live with the consequences!

Interesting post though, I'd never thought of it like that. I'm quite looking forward to the next time someone asks me this now!

I've never heard of Peapod, Upromise or paper coupons for online sites at all. I wonder if they are in my area. I'm going to go check them out.  I'm looking for additional ways to save time now, so this would be great.

  • Credit Scores Across the Country: Which Third are You In?   17 years 10 weeks ago

I really don't care what my credit score is. My goal in life is to get off the credit wheel and become totally self-financing. And the end is within sight.

Peapod was a lifesaver when I broke my ankle and could not get to the store. As others have mentioned, you can choose various options to reduce delivery costs BUT on several occasions I ran into the problem where I had ordered over $100--however they were out of stock on items, so my actual order was under $100 and I got charged a higher delivery fee. Not sure if there is a way to confirm ahead of time--I could have added to my order to make up the difference if I had known. But, like I said, with my broken ankle, it was the only way I had of getting my groceries and was well worth the delivery charges. I would recommend Peapod, but warn people to check out all the options ahead of time.

  • What can you do with $13 extra a week?   17 years 10 weeks ago

Anybody who feels the $13 a week is paltry can send theirs to me. Before taxes it comes to $56 and change a month. I could pay my water/sewer and trash bills with that.

  • Book review: Wabi Sabi Simple   17 years 10 weeks ago

But, really, I think piqued might be too strong a word. After all, while I was excited by your review of the book, I wouldn't exactly call said review provoking or challenging. Let's just say that you roused my interest.
    Thus endeth the lesson.

Your review piqued my interest, too. ;)

  • That "What if you knew you were going to die" question   17 years 10 weeks ago

I think Jean Luc Picard might have said it best: "Someone once told me that time is a predator that stalked us all our lives. But I rather believe that time is a companion who goes with us on the journey, that reminds us to cherish every moment because they'll never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as how we live it. After all, Number One, we are only mortal."

Just imparting a little Star Trek wisdom.
P.S. I have always hated those "what if you knew you would die when" questions, too.

  • Build a Bed for Cheap (and Look Good Doing It)   17 years 10 weeks ago

I like the sturdiness of this bed so I made one like it but I took it one step further by adding some pull-out storage drawers underneath. I came across several ideas on this page: http://www.free-bed-plans.com/docs/storage_bed_plans.htm and just ran with it. Now, I have a place for all my clothes and other crap and couldn't be happier!

Are there any other places like this to buy groceries on?

  • Using PAPER Coupons When You Order Online   17 years 10 weeks ago

I would like try the service but they don't deliver in my state.

  • Quickly Remove Scratches From CDs and DVDs   17 years 10 weeks ago

Well, I suggest you TRY the toothpaste or the Brasso cleaning ways. A CD Buffer would work, but it costs money. Also, do NOT change the position of your Xbox 360, when a CD is inside. For example, if it is laying out on the floor, take the game out before you make it stand up.

  • Baby Carrots: The Frugal Idea That Isn't   17 years 10 weeks ago

Hi I have a new puppy and she loves carrots, but not the little baby ones( yes I read that they aren't really baby ones) , can she eat the green tops of the real carrots? I like the whole ones and she seemed to like the tops but I don't know if it's safe?

  • Using PAPER Coupons When You Order Online   17 years 10 weeks ago

If there's a delivery charge, I don't have a problem with omitting the tip. For starters, the delivery charge is generally more than I would tip. And if they're charging for delivery, they'd better be paying the driver out of that--if their charges don't make up for the costs to them of providing the service, the service isn't helping them.

I always tip if there is no delivery charge, and I tip about what I would in a restaurant.

  • Using PAPER Coupons When You Order Online   17 years 10 weeks ago

I have never had a problem with using coupons with Peapod. Plus, the delivery is discounted up to $2 if you use certain time windows, making the delivery $4.95. This is worth it to me just so I do not have to spend the time in the grocery store. Plus, if your local Stop & Shop (I am in Boston) doubles coupons, Peapod will also. They double up to 99 cents. I would encourage you to try it to see if you like it.

  • Using PAPER Coupons When You Order Online   17 years 10 weeks ago

Peapod doesn't deliver in my area, but I noticed that if you go to their site through UPromise, you get $7 in UPromise rewards on every order. Plus, there's a first-order $15 discount using the code UPROMISE15.

So if you have a UPromise account, you get your delivery fee back in college savings, which is pretty sweet.

  • Health Insurance Costs Too High? Alternative Not Pretty   17 years 10 weeks ago

I am on the same boat. Even with my insurance because of the high cost i still have to pay, I only seek medical help when it is something serious. Health insurance and medical costs are way out of the reach of most people these days. This is a fact.

  • Health Insurance Costs Too High? Alternative Not Pretty   17 years 10 weeks ago

I lived in France for five years and I can attest that the health system in France works pretty well. And in many cases better than the one in the U.S. Most people in France will never trade their health system for the one in the U.S. I heard other people from other European countries expressed similar ideas. The U.S. health care system is flawed and needs to be revamped. It is the worst health care system of any industrialized nation. By far!
