Sounds like a good book. Your description of wabi sabi reminds me of the Quaker Testimonies.

  • What should you do when you are asked to repay an overpayment of severance?   17 years 10 weeks ago

If they overpay you and then try to take it back, they must be legally liable to let you keep at least some of the overpayment as compensation for the inconvenience they have caused.

In particular, if you have already spent the money, they must be liable for misleading you about your financial situation, causing you to make decisions that you would not otherwise have made.

Raise those two issues with them, and they'll reconsider.

  • How to Make Moonshine   17 years 10 weeks ago

It's safe to use aluminum, but it may cause reactions with the mash/wort that negatively affect flavor. But it is not dangerous.

When distilling from refined sugars, essentially no methanol is produced. When distilling from grains/fruits containing pectin, a very tiny amount of methanol might be produced. However, this is amount produced is negligible. Throwing away the "heads" will eliminate almost all methanol produced, but the main reason to discard the "heads and tails" is to get rid of cogeners and fusel oils and other such things that can ruin the flavor.

The horror stories of people going blind or dying are from unscrupulous jerks trying to make a buck adulterating their moonshine with alcohol that was intentionally denatured for industrial uses only. And basically, the only reason alcohol is even denatured is to avoid having to pay liquor taxes on it.

Consuming trace amounts of methanol at the same time you consume ethanol generally results in the methanol passing through your body unchanged, as ethanol gets processed preferentially by the body, and the booze has way more ethanol waiting to get processed than it would any methanol.

Another example of why it makes sense to keep your own records...you are your own first line of defense in these kinds of situations.

I will be starting my own record keeping book after reading this article.

I also think you should keep records for the equal pay plans that utility companies offer. I made extra payments and didn't see my payment go down. I still don't know what the deal was with that.

To me, wabisabi isn't just about simplicity -- it's about valuing the imperfections of real things, as opposed to the perfection of things that can't be real. It's like the difference between a "perfect little boy" who never misbehaves and how our real children are "perfect" to us, in spite of -- or even because of -- the flaws and idiosyncrasies that make them human.

When I was younger, I didn't get it at all. I valued symmetry and perfection. In some kinds of Japanese wabisabi pottery, you turn a nice cup on the wheel and then squash it a bit, to make each one distinctive and unique. That just seemed perverse.

As I've aged, I've come to appreciated it more and I now think you can also use it in appreciating how to find beauty even in very unnatural things. You can't only find it in unspoiled wilderness, but also in oil refineries and urban blight -- in the rainbow of an oil-droplet in a mud puddle.

  • Inside the Shady World of Cheap iTunes Gift Cards   17 years 10 weeks ago

I bought two $100 gift cards for $3, not each, 3 dollar altogether and both seem to work fine. I used both and my account balance grew $200. Bought music, TV shows and movies, now my balance is down to 30 dollar.

No amount of legit discounting can explain this. I'm totally baffled.

  • Write for money online series - Part II - Associated Content   17 years 10 weeks ago

I think you have to take sites like Associated Content for what they are, not what you might like them to be, right?

There are thousands of people writing there. Some good, some bad. I think sites like that are great because they work for all kinds of people who are writing for different reasons.

The point is to find something that works for you. If Associated Content and its ilk provide what you want - a platform to write and a little money for doing it - fantastic. If not, move on to the next thing.

  • Cheap Decorating: Three Simple Hacks for Style on a Dime   17 years 10 weeks ago

Love the wine bottle idea, though in a house with kids and pets, I don't think I'll risk glass bottles in the bathroom. You can do the same thing in the kitchen with your dish soap. In fact, we have a cute wine bottle we've been looking to repurpose...

My favorite super cheap decorating strategy is a good cleaning. Giving a room a good top to bottom cleaning, straightening all the rugs and pillows, dusting, and a squirt of febreze can do a lot to perk up a drab-looking room, when you can't afford fresh paint or new furniture. (I speak from experience.)

  • How to Get Rid of All Your Crap   17 years 10 weeks ago

I love this article! It sounds like you did a great job. I find this a coincidence because two days ago one of my articles ran in the paper, and it essentially describes the same thing that you're talking about here! I guess that purging through stuff is something a lot of people are doing (or need to do, anyway)

Here's the link to my article: http://alternativelivings.blogspot.com/2009/02/blogging-for-sunday-paper...

  • Seller Funded Down Payment Assistance Charities - Scammers or Saints?   17 years 10 weeks ago

Re: what Suz wrote: "It's very hard, especially in a higher market, to have enough in savings to afford your first home. I'd be interested in one of these programs, but as with anything I think research would be in order... Including with the BBB to see what kinds of complaints one of these companies has had."

The reason it's hard to afford a home is because prices are still artificially high and need to come back down to be in line with incomes. These bogus devices to get people into houses they can't afford will do no one any favors and will lead to lasting credit damage, financial chaos, etc. It already has!

And if you think the BBB will help you think again--they are a business membership org, and they do not report all complaints. Their new rating system has been criticized by businesses and consumer org's alike; it can be impossible for a good business to get the highest rating, and it can still be possible for a bad one to get a good rating.

If the IRS called these DPA's a scam that is a clear red flag. It takes a huge amount of complaints and problems to move a federal agency into saying that, and even more for them to ACT on it. I have worked with consumer org's and made use of federal and state agencies, and have followed the problems of the BBB and consumers' over-reliance on it, etc. There can be serious problems before an agency acts, and serious problems before a BBB reports anything. I have also done legal research that is far beyond what most consumers know how to do. Consumers are WAY too quick to dismiss "internet complaints" or "consumer complaints." Often, that is the most truthful if not the ONLY report, you can find.

  • Cheap Decorating: Three Simple Hacks for Style on a Dime   17 years 10 weeks ago

I love the wine bottle/glass idea, but I wouldn't do it in my bathroom--the image of dropping one or the other (and sooner or later I WOULD) makes me wince. Glass everywhere, and me in bare feet and the cats in bare paws. As my mom points out, she remembers glass shampoo bottles and that's why she likes plastic!

If you don't have tile, though, it's a lovely idea.

  • Seller Funded Down Payment Assistance Charities - Scammers or Saints?   17 years 10 weeks ago

The IRS said many of these are scams and I agree. http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=156675,00.html

They are not charities if the "gift" is rolled into the cost of a house, nor are they charities if they're laundering money for sellers and builders. Whether the money is kicked back to the seller/builder or simply assists in making a sale to an unqualified buyer, it reeks of a scam. A true gift is not the same as these programs and congress did not ban true gifts. It's disgusting that the housing industry got behind the effort to bring back these devices which contribute to artificial price inflation and foreclosures. NOT everyone should buy a house, and NOT everyone can afford to. This nonsense about homeownership being "The American Dream" has crossed the line from puffing to deception IMO, because a house isn't an investment, and it's not right for everyone. Time to stop vilifying renters, and time to investigate the housing and lending industries for mortgage fraud, and imprison some corporate CEO's, instead of handing them a mega-billion-dollar bailout.

  • How to Make Moonshine   17 years 10 weeks ago

    My setup is:
    Nearly 25 lbs of sugar
    Water
    Champagne yeast
All in a 5 gal plastic office-water cooler style jug.
Some of the sugar may have settled on the bottom.
We are planning to distill it, we have an all copper setup.
    Should I worry about methanol/acetone?
Just dont want to go blind, Thanks!

  • Chinese Money Habits - How My Culture Influences My Attitudes Toward Money   17 years 10 weeks ago

The Chinese are also the least generous of all Asian cultures and tightest when it comes to money. Also, Chinese business people run rampant tax fraud and insist on hiding cash under the table from Uncle Sam. Compound this with government handouts (ie. Section 8 Housing)... come to several Asian neighborhoods in LA and you'll see families driving Mercedes cars yet living in Section 8 housing.

Call me racist if you so desire but I am Asian and have seen many more Chinese bilk the system than garner envy for having superior money management skills. Its a mix of the good and the bad if you ask me.

  • What should you do when you are asked to repay an overpayment of severance?   17 years 10 weeks ago

Oh cool.  I'm glad Microsoft decided to let it go.  It probably wasn't worth it to them to demand all that money back.

  • Write for money online series - Part II - Associated Content   17 years 10 weeks ago

Exactly what constitutes a "professional" or a "real" writer? I suggest the use of a dictionary as to the definition of "professional". If you write, you are a "real writer". No one person can decide who does and who does not qualify. As to writing on AC, yes, the pay is minimal, but many choose to publish articles on AC for other reasons. Some do so for future promotion of work, and regardless of their reasons, these writers do not deserve to be accused of "rewriting, revising, and basically copying other stuff on the web". The business of writing is just that...business. How you run your business is a separate issue than your ability as a writer.
Personally, I have found the writers on Associated Content vastly superior to the majority of these "professionals" who are being paid to write for newspapers and many magazines.

  • 13 Natural and Easy Ways to Lower Your Blood Sugar   17 years 10 weeks ago

Your sugar in your urine should be 0. Did they check your blood sugar level? The sugar gets in your urine by your body trying to get rid of it in your blood. Your kidneys excrete it to lower your blood glucose levels. I would think that your blood glucose levels would be high if your urine levels are 2000. I would ask to have fasting blood glucose level done, and I would not wait 6 months. Hope you figure it out.

  • Root cause of the financial crisis   17 years 10 weeks ago

The federal reserve system is the root cause of the financial crisis. Listen to Ron Paul....The most proven American patriot we have.

The fed is not federal and there are no reserves. There's just a printing press and a bunch of banker/government yes men. Helicopter Ben is the current leader. Guess what.....the helicopters have arrived with plenty of cash.
Does anyone with half a brain think you can create money by printing it on a printing press.

Do you know why the wizards and witches in the Harry Potter movies use gold and silver as money? It's because even they can't create(conjure) money out of thin air. If they could....then there can be no rules even in the world of magic! Only bankers can create money out of thin air and get muggles to believe the money is good.

God calls unredeemable paper debt money "treasures of wickedness". All our debt based assets are really liabilities.

Everyone should own some silver coins.....because real money is not made of paper.

Vote to end the fed. It has failed in it's mission to stabilize the banking system and stop inflation. It has caused the problems.
    Thank God for Ron Paul.
