  • Beware of Pretty Things: 4 Reasons I’m Keeping My Ugly, Old Stuff   17 years 9 weeks ago

There are chairs/sofas that I some day plan to have reupholstered, but not until the rowdy kids are gone. Why would I pay $ to do it and I then have vomit/spit up/scratches, etc., on my new furniture? That would be nuts. I'll wait. I don't want to have to nag, Watch out for the new chair-sofa-bookcase-table.... Having old stuff with kids around gives a certain peace of mind. This does remind me of a story. When a certain sister, whose house looks like it could be featured in House Beautiful, came to visit once she commented on the state of things in my house. She bought something nice/neew for me and said that while it didn't match anything I had, it didn't appear that I cared whether things matched in my house.

Functional and paid for works in my house too.

It depends on what you define as 'truth'. In this day and age, (dis)information is easier to find. Allowing more people to make changes to something that people consider a legitimate source of accurate information, and then considering this information to be 100% legit, is a laughable idea.

  • Is Six Figures Really That Much?   17 years 9 weeks ago

Why is everybody hating on Catherine, or people making six-figures for that matter? That kind of income doesn't just happen to someone. It's hard earned for most people.

Good for you if you're family lives on $35k a year. Just a thought, what do you think is going to happen to the economy and your job when everybody cancels their cable, only buys the cheapest stuff at Walmart or 2nd hand stores, and nobody buys a car anymore.

And do you really think your parents had such an easy time raising you and your 5 siblings on $30k a year? Sure, you never missed anything, but in reality your parents where struggling to pay their bills just like everybody else. Parents usually protect their kids from harsh realities like not being able the bills or not being able to afford anything.

    Great post!

My husband and I have been doing this for years.
I make a fresh fruited water everyday in our water pitchers.
Add sliced lemons, limes, calamansi, oranges, apples, peaches, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries....whatever you have available. I also add a couple of sprigs of mint from our herb garden for flavor.

As Mikey from the Life cereal commercial used to say,
    "Try it...you'll like it"!

Best to you on your water journey.

But, I do like antique furniture that other people have found ugly. Ugliness in my home detracts from my ability to enjoy it and stay peaceful and joyful enough to blog efficiently -- or at all. But, I definitely agree with the spirit an underlying message of your post! : )

Hello, Thank you for reading me and being concerned. As I explained here, I don't want to have to lift someone and then fall back in slow motion as they drop to the canvas:

"But hold up now, I know what you’re thinking, it’s not me just drinking water and not eating. That would be stupid, unhealthy and I would end up suplexing someone who doesn’t deserve to be suplexed. Yes suplex. That’s index figure to the belt-loop, lift and flip a person because, not eating is not good."

  • Seven Tips for the Newly Unemployed   17 years 9 weeks ago

Unemployment is one of the hardest things to live through. I was suddenly dumped after fourteen years on a job. I was 51, so it was quite discouraging. No severance. Yes, you bet I got unemployment. First thing! I've read a lot of higher paid or "professional" people commenting that they don't want to be on unemployment until they really "need" it. Get real, people, you need it right away. Plus, you have paid funds in for this benefit.

This is not the time to be extra loyal to an employer, even if you have sympathy for his or her struggles. At a different time, that same employer may suddenly see the logic in letting you go. Save as you work, so you won't be so gut-wrenchingly dependent on your boss. Take advantage of the opportunities that come to you, even if you are employed.

It took me a few jobs to find the right job, and quite awhile to be back on my feet financially. However, there are some inestimable pluses to the changes I made through that difficult period.

It's my personal belief that no honest work is beneath someone out of work. I've waited tables and been a temp when I've had to. When I was in relationships with people who didn't have the same attitude, who were willing to coast on my income, it never worked out. So if you look to a partner to bail you out, bear in mind that it may negatively affect the relationship, and in some cases, cause it to end. People have to pull their own weight. Don't get so wrapped up in your own misery that you lose sight of the feelings of others.

My heart goes out to the unemployed, because I've been there, and I may be there again.

Let's be thankful for a few things. Bush wanted to privatize social security, and let people's future depend entirely on the vagaries of the stock market. Thank God that never came to pass!

A lot of money has been pumped into our economy. This isn't going to last forever.

  • Beware of Pretty Things: 4 Reasons I’m Keeping My Ugly, Old Stuff   17 years 9 weeks ago

For years, I had a horrible nightstand. It was made of particle board and cheap peeling veneer, and it was really ugly. Why did I keep it for so long? Because a replacement would have cost quite a lot, and the ugly one held up my lamp just fine.

Then I married a man who had his own horrible nightstand. They didn't match, but we had only one (regular) income when we first got married, so we didn't have money for new furniture.

A year after that, my dad moved out of his house. He had a set of nightstands that he wasn't going to take with him, and both of us liked them.

Most of our furniture is hand-me-downs from family, pieces that we bought at thrift stores and refinished, and an amazing solid-wood headboard and footboard that I got on eBay for under $300 shipped.

I have bought a few new pieces. However, when I do, I'm willing to spend what it costs to get a quality piece that will last a long time. And if I need something urgently but it doesn't have to last forever, there is always the horror that is the Ikea shopping experience.

  • Beware of Pretty Things: 4 Reasons I’m Keeping My Ugly, Old Stuff   17 years 9 weeks ago

I like my old, ugly furniture. Some of it is well made (mostly bookshelves, including the kind made with wood boards and cinder blocks). Some is mediocre (stereo cabinet and deacon's bench made by parents, who are not carpenters, and bookshelves made by a friend who is not carpenter). Some of it is just crap that still works (cardboard drawers that hold my undies, particle-board desk that is still pretty--no I do not have any pets or kids!). I also have a well-made useless bench/coffee table (made by carpenter friend, but doesn't fit in house!) that I can't give up.

They have stories. And once I put my pretty and/or interesting things them, they're better.

I have sanded down and re-stained or re-painted some things. I have switched out some door knobs and drawer pulls.

Guests are unimpressed (except for my huge shelves in the living room made by a carpenter). But they do find things to look at (books and knickknacks). And they don't come to look at my stuff anyway; they come to carve pumpkins or watch a movie or play games or whatever. So long as things are clean and neat, I'm happy.

Mainly a water, coffee (homemade) and tea (homemade) person myself, and loving the extra cash, too. Congrats on your adventure in good drinking!

I am assuming that you are EATING food and not just living off of water?

If you're not, then what you are doing is dangerous.

  • The Gettin'-Baptized-in-the-Watah Epiphany   17 years 9 weeks ago

The only thing I drink besides water is coffee.

Each morning I have 2 cups of coffee, and I carry my 1 liter Nalgene bottle at all times. I end up drinking between 3-5 of them a day. I've been doing this for years.

Sure I have the occasional soda, but about 6 days a week I'm drinking nearly nothing but water. I have not turned into a water buffalo or a water chestnut yet, but I'm still waiting...

    Good luck!

I love this post. Too often I think we are swayed by the beauty of new things, or the desire to impress others, but when we take the time to step back from the situation, as you have, then we realize we don't honestly need anything new at all. I wrote a similar post about my own experience with furniture a few months back. The sentiment is very similar.

My Grandmother had this enormous chair (the seat is the width of 2 armchairs, and it is incredibly overstuffed). I have a lot of childhood memories of Grandma sitting in the middle of the chair and than all of us grandkids piling around her on the seat and the wide arms of the chair as she would read to us. When she died the family got together to divide her stuff and I was sad at the fact that I knew that someone with more seniority than me would get this great chair, but it turned out that no one wanted it for the simple reason that the fabric was bright pink with lopsided squares all over it. All of these memories, and everyone kept saying how ugly and tacky it was. When I spoke up that I would like to have it people seemed relieved because "now we don't have to pay to haul it to the dump". I love this chair - it is the most comfortable thing I own, and after almost 70 years of constant use it still has all of its plushness. I finally made a cover for it a few years ago when my husband wouldn't stop complaining about the horrible color (our house has lots of blues, greens, and browns....so the pink does stand out a bit) but the chair is as wonderful as it ever was and I still can't believe my luck that no one else could see beyond its pink color. Even finding a chair this wide would be a challenge, but no new chair in the world would ever be as wonderful as the one I already have.

  • Bar Stool Economics   17 years 9 weeks ago

I think most don't understand what the story was really about. It a much bigger picture then simple politics. We are a free country. People are welcome to live where ever they would like. You tax the rich to much, and they can take their money else where. Sorry that's the realty. A business can run tax free in a lot of countries. Those countries know how important it is to attract business and to keep them there. I think as Americans we forget that its just not all about us. How do we force a business we want to Tax 39% to stay here and not move operations.
Close our borders to the land of the free?

I used no name brand furniture polish AND stainless steel polish and the video game worked again! I think it was the furniture polish that did the trick but not sure. I didn't leave it on for a few days and come back to buff it, I tried it right away and buffed immediately. My 7 yr. old is so happy that his game fully loaded that he leaped for joy & kissed me and told me over and over again, "I love you mom, I love you mom, I love you!!!" Thanks for this site that gave me the ideas~
