With a house full of kids and not a lot of money to spend on Valentines gifts, we have often done a movie night at home. We put the kids to bed, get comfy, pop some popcorn, and make a special drink in the blender.
This self-help industry continues to be ironic in itself. People are spending money on something that should help them save them from financial slump. On top of that, what they get from these self-help books/videos/whatever are advices that your grandmomma already told you years ago. And now they pay just to remember that? LOL
Make your own card; nice candlelit meal at home. Also if you want flowers, Sam's club or grocery stores flower dept. usually have them much cheaper than a florist, and you can arrange them yourself in your own vase.
This valentines day my husband and I will be making chocolate dipped strawberries (or maybe even some truffles) together. We will also share a quiet candlelight meal, our favorite style: bread and cheese, salami, chutney or another spread, vegetables and some wine.
If anyone is still unsure about purchasing AppleCare from eBay, you can also get it from Amazon at a discount. While the discount is less than what you could find on eBay, at least you know Amazon is a reputable seller. I just got the MacBook Pro version, which normally retails for $350 for $300. I registered it this past weekend with absolutely no problems.
I've never used the Entertainment Book, but I think some restaurant coupons would really be great. I've cut back on eating out a lot due to the economy, so maybe I'll be able to get out more than once a month!
Write out on little slips of paper all of the things you love about your Valentine- and include a few good for free massage or day free from chores or something they can redeem whenever they like- anywhere from 52 to 365- and once a week or daily for the entire year they get to draw out a paper.
This is the most popular gift I have ever given to anyone.
I'm actually okay with lots of advisors whose advice pretty much comes down to the same old things, because some people who can't heard the advice spoken one way can hear it when it's spoken another. Also, the listener has to be ready: The exact same advice can sound really stupid to someone age 22--and sound pretty darn clever to the same person age 26.
I'm even okay with overselling the advice--promising cars and diamonds and furs--because it's actually true that frugal living is a path to filling your wants as well as your needs. (Just your most important wants, but still--there's luxury down that path, something that too many people don't understand.)
So, I think it's important to distinguish between those people and the bad ones--the people who sell ordinary advice at extraordinary prices, and (especially) the ones who claim to sell advice but actually con people into complex schemes that a really just ways to grab their money.
My hubby's hobby is cooking. He just got laid off, so he will have plenty of time to cook me a wonderful meal. It's nothing new really, he cooks for me everyday, but my valentines meal will probably have some kind of heart shaped food on the plate!
No going out to eat or expensive gifts. We are happy just to have a warm home, and good food, and 4 healthy kids.
Your finances and your weight have a lot in common-- you didn't put the weight on overnight, it won't come off overnight. Likewise there is no miricle get rich quick formula . . .
The real recipe to getting rich is planning, hard work, and to stick-to-it long enough for it to work.
Eat at home on V-Day, avoid the crazy dining out rush. Pick up some gourmet goods you would never buy and fix them at home, like little hors d'ouerves and ice cream in a coconut shell. Ship the kids to mom's.
Timely post. I remember getting a great deal on AppleCare for my iPod video and Macbook Pro when my school had a mega sale. Now I'm looking around for AppleCare for my iPhone and this is worth looking into...thanks Torley!
Mine is having a love letter created for me. That is how my husband first got my attention. He called me an angel in his letter and I've carried it with me for the past 10 years without fail and plan to carry it with me for the rest of my life. Thank you for such a wonderful giveaway!
I'm all too familiar with the fact that some people don't feel alive if they aren't living constantly in survival mode. It's learned behavior and it's hard to undo. I say pick up Johnny Upinya's new book "Buy this Book and make me Riyatttchh" and it'll straighten you out.
Caveat emptor. Do research. It's just people are either too busy or too lazy to even worry about the real worth of their gold. Or financial desperation perhaps? Some people just want quick cash and sadly, those bastards prey on them.
My girlfriend and I are going to go for a walk by the river, then we'll go back home, make brownies and watch some David Attenborough nature documentaries. We'll take pictures throughout the day and make a free animoto video. Fun, romantic, relaxing and cheap.
Valentine's day... sigh.

We will be going to Ottawa for 5 days, and then Montreal for 3 days and 3 nights. We have hotel reservations set up and plan on doing touristy stuff!
This was hilarious (and so true!). I love your writing.

Celebrate on the 15th when everything has been marked down.

We like to make a nice dinner at home instead of going out.

All good advice, just remember investing involves risk of loss-- nothing is surefire . . .
Great post!

Sorry folks . . .
A homemade gift from the heart would be great!
Just say I love you!
