My favorite coupons in the Entertainment Book (I actually ripped all 4 from my mom's book!) is the four Shoprite coupons, good for $5 off a $50 purchase, you can use one each quarter. I'm always shopping there, so it was worth it to buy it for my mom for Christmas, I ended up making out on the deal. lol
I'd probably get the most mileage out of the grocery store or movie coupons, but I would love it if there were some coupons in there for more local/independent places and/or places I haven't gotten a chance to try yet.
If you take the time to actually look through all the coupons (instead of just checking the index for a particular establishment) there are often coupons to get things for free - a free cup of coffee somewhere is pretty common. I love those!
Also sometimes there are coupons for money off a minimum purchase at a grocery store, good stuff! :)
Consumerist reported this week that Cash4gold is being investigated by the Florida AG's office. Hopefully they will find a way to shut these crooks down.
The suggestion of getting envelopes and sending them junk does have some merit. It has been used to enough extent to cause credit card companies to put tracking numbers on the postage paid envelopes. You can just block them out with a sharpie though. I think I remember one of Jerry Falwell's religious shows having the same problem of many people wasting return postage to make the company take a financial hit. Falwell's group ceased the envelope promotion due to it.
If more people did a brief blog post about this or posted it on a forum they frequent it could actually change something here.
In the past when we have purchased the Entertainment book it has has lots of "Buy One Get One Free" coupons for McDonald's, Burger King, Dairy Queen, drive-in theatres, go-karting and lazer tag that we have used.
Only complaint would that the places that accept these need to be sure their employees are fully trained in how to handled these at the cash register - on numerous occassions ove the years when we would give the employee the coupon they had no idea how handle inputting into their system and had to resort to calling the manager and the transaction taking from 5-20 minutes to a few even saying they didn't take the coupons at all and having to resort to asking for the manager.
Thank you for clarifying this distinction. I had forgotten the danger part, and the higher cost part. For me, the action step is to simplify in order to put more resources into the changes I want to see, such as tree planting in Burundi. We feel better and live better when we don't have it all. But enough is good.
The Grand Exchange is great, as are the charts showing sales prices, trends, etc. It was created about a year after I wrote this article but thanks for mentioning the update to RS.
It isn't uncommon to run into people who make judgements about other people before meeting them. In fact, the "talking stain" advertisement so popular in 2008 attempts to make light of these poor mis-giuded folks (who are usually named something invariably common like Linda or William, with apologies to Linda's and William's worldwide of course).
Having been around for more than a half a century, I've also seen my share of these folks and watched them pass up on perfectly wonderful opportunities in friends, family and workmates because they reacted to a name or a facial feature or the car someone came in or the weather that day or the shirt on their back or ... well you get the picture. Frankly I wonder how these poor folks make it through a normal day with their insanity intact.
Anyhow, the old adage in re to not judging a book by it's cover seems to have been lost in some folk's mindless devotion to the "New York Minute". To them, I say, "Get a life." To the rest of us poor slobs that have to deal with them, I say, "Good luck and have a great day, eh!"
P.S. No. My sur and given names are quite common. But I never let that get me down or hold me back. ;-)
My husband hates crowds, so instead of going out to a nice restaurant we put the kids to bed and make a nice dinner together. Not only do we save money, but we get to spend time together doing something we both enjoy.
There is a feature of Runescape called The Grand Exchange, and it is where people can buy and trade items (kind of like stocks in the stock market). The prices rise and fall according to supply and demand (also like the stock market). This can help people learn how to invest and etc...
My frugal tip is to pass on the romantic eating out and eat in instead. If you don't want to cook too much, the preprepped stuff at the grocery store is still cheaper than eating out and can be pretty darn tasty
If they are paying the shipping, we should all get them to send us an envelope and they send it back to them with a piece of iron (or just some rocks). The shipping cost may bankrupt them and they will go away! Come on people, clearly these people are creative, we should be too!!!

I've never used an entertainment book, but their 2-for-1 restaurant coupons sound very promising!

I used to love the movie ticket coupons. I love going to the movies and it's so expensive!

Hi Frd...

Good Think.
Thanks

I'd love some restaurant coupons!
I've never had one of these, but after reading some of these comments, I must say that 2 for 1 restaurant meals sound PERFECT!
Thanks for the mention. Nice timely post considering the doom that the news channels are always spreading :).
Cheers,
FIRE Finance

What would be most useful to me would be coupons for local eateries that feature a gluten-free, vegan option.

We almost always make our decision on where to eat based on the coupons we have for that area of the city (Kansas City).
We, meaning the kids and I like to leave I Love You heart-shaped sticky notes on daddy's desk or in his lunch bag. :) We do this any time though.
This guy and apparently what looks like his mother and daughter should be ashamed.
