  • The Piggy Bank: A Secret to Simple Saving   17 years 17 weeks ago

Great article! Our credit union gives out small piggy banks when you open a savings account for your child. They also have a coin counting machine in the lobby, and if you belong to the credit union, it counts your money for free. If you don't, it takes 5 percent of the money. I just emptied the pig and after 4 months of change it yielded $65. The $ went in the savings account and now we start again!

Though I use technology every day I honestly don't know much about it. It'd be nice to be able to better keep up with my hubby who is very knowledgable about computers so I can actually know what he's talking about and trying to teach me sometimes!

I actually have several. I guess I'm a sort of amateur "collector" of them. I use one for all my found money, like someone else said above. Any time I find any change or bills on the ground it goes into the piggy bank. Last year I ended up with $167.19! I love bringing in all that change to the bank on January 1 and seeing how much I've found all year. Then I deposit it into a savings account and start all over.

in case it hasn't been noticed, January 9, 2009, not 2008 for the end of the contest...

I haven't tried this but I've heard that if you offer a glass of the wine you brought to the head chef they will usually wave the corking fee.

I love freebies and could use some help in the techno geek world.

This book would be a wonderful addition to my school's library. As inadequate as I feel with computers, software and the Internet- at times I function as the guru for staff and students.

What an aspiration! Sure, I'd love this book. I don't know what I don't know until I find it.

  • What can renters do if their landlords are in foreclosure?   17 years 17 weeks ago

I live in San Francisco and we found the foreclosure notice taped to our building a few months ago.

It seems we're fine for now. We are paying rent to someone new and repairs and things that the old landlord never handled are actually happening! It's not always necessarily a bad thing.

  • My Kitchen Could Be a Yeast Farm   17 years 17 weeks ago

Any beer lovers out there already know that the Lambic style of beer is characterized by it's use of "wild" yeast, or frankly, whatever is floating around in the air wherever you happen to be making said beer. The regional differences between the strains produce different flavors. Most commercial brewers jealously replicate "their" yeast strains under carefully controlled conditions so that they may achieve consistent results.

Here's an example, going back 500 or so years:

  • Great idea for Papa Murphy’s – make the pizzas in order.   17 years 17 weeks ago

I found this thread looking for pizza coupons. I've read the whole thing and have to respond. I'm not an employee or franchisee of Papa Murphy's...

We live in the Seattle metro area. As has been said, stores vary as people vary, i.e. management and employees in some stores are better than others. I can and have made my own pizza before. I find that for some of the specialty pizzas, it's cheaper to have Papa Murphy's make it and take it home to bake. Our favorite is the Chicken, Bacon & Artichoke D-Lite thin crust pizza. I cannot make it from scratch for what I can buy it pre-made for.

As others have said, there are almost always coupons available that will knock the price down $2-4. Of the two stores we go to, one does a better job than the other and we tend to order there.

We have NEVER ordered ahead and not had our pizza in the rack, ready to purchase. YMMV.

We always thank the people behind the counter and tell them how much we appreciate them. That always gets a smile.

It's like it was written for me!

I know just enough about technology to seriously screw things up, but not quite enough to fix them when I do (but I plough in anyway)

  • Five More Tips For Eating In Restaurants And Sticking To A Budget   17 years 17 weeks ago

We've recently started trying to recreate restaurant meals at home. We like to cook, so we're generally fairly stocked in terms of spices and such, probably moreso than many families. But we love recreating thing like Thai curry or tandoori chicken, because it's so much cheaper to make by yourself. Curry ingredients cost <$10 & can feed 5-6!

  • How the Banks Were Fleeced -- A Primer to Mortgage Fraud   17 years 17 weeks ago

Don't fool yourselves; the banks knew exactly what was going on and in most cases (some that I am personally aware of) initiated the fraud. Bottom line is that the banks made oodles of commissions off these loans and pressured the mortgage people to make these unscrupulous loans - they paid them double commission for doing so, and threatened the jobs of those who wanted to stick with the tried and true lending practices. They got bailed out and we got stuck with homes worth crap. They should be made to go back and re-set each and every mortgage principle for anyone who bought between 2002 & 2007 for those of us WHO HAVE KEPT ON PAYING ON TIME EVERY TIME because we don't want our credit ruined.

This is a book that I could definitely use - I'm so glad you featured it! While I am able to do everything necessary in terms of daily tasks, there are certain things I'd like to do in the future (without the help of a more knowledgable male) and this seems like the perfect reference. I hope I win :)

  • It can be done; how to fold the perfect fitted sheet.   17 years 17 weeks ago

I saw those vids and I started trying it. Much to my dismay it wasn't working out. I realized it's because my fitted sheets have elastic all the way around, not just at the corners. Still haven't found a way to fold those. Boo hoo.

And right before trips to the city we bust it open and use that often $30-50 in quarters to pay for bridge tolls, parking, and coffee....makes those type of travel expenses painless. If there's anything left we return it to the kitty bank when we get back for the next trip. My kids have tiny piggybanks that they use for their 'ice cream ' funding.

This book looks really good, I just came across it yesterday!

  • Waste Not, Want Not: Turning Waste Into Savings   17 years 17 weeks ago

I found a nifty patented device called the Clip and Drip. It is a funnel with clips on the top and bottom, both shaped for the neck of a bottle. I use it for food [catsup] and also toiletries [lotion].

In regards to reusing margerine tubs or other retail service containers-- I would be recommend against. Plastics can leach their ingredients into food. The plastics are not designed for acidic items, and reused containers should never be used in the microwave. It's OK to keep a margerine tub to keep a kitchen sponge in, or put a coffee can lid under a plant.

In general I would recommend not to buy single servings: buy the largest size of retail container that is appropriate for your household. Use the bulk food bins at the grocery store to buy food without retail containers!!

  • The Piggy Bank: A Secret to Simple Saving   17 years 17 weeks ago

I got a really neat bronze shiny metallic piggy bank from Urban Outfitters last year. It has recently filled up, and I counted out over $50 in there. I love the piggy bank - what else am I going to do with all my change? I also saw a couple of cute ones at Target recently...

Commerce Bank has Coinstar machines that do the adding for you. You don't have to have an account with them. It prints out a paper receipt that you take to a teller. We happen to bank with them so they just deposit it into our account, but I've seen others opt for paper money in hand.
