I am sure any veteran thief who has time and believes you have valuables hidden will check the toilet tank...
Whilst renting houses over a ten-year period, I twice found something valuable stashed (and presumably forgotten) including a big of mysterious white power that went straight down the toilet bowl I might add.
I vote for cereal boxes at the back of the cupboard and the like.
When I moved into on-campus apartments at MSU, they had a ton of free coin jars with a plastic lid that had a slot in it for change. I should have grabbed more than one (they were really trying to give them away).
I originally used it for quarters only, the jar had a nice handle which made it easy to grab and take to the laundry. I gradually started to add loose coins that I'd find in my pants pockets while doing laundry.
Eventually, I no longer needed quarters so it has become an all purpose coin jar. I hate carrying lots of change in my wallet, so once in a while I'll move some into the jar. An added bonus is that now my fiance puts his change in the jar instead of on my table :)
Once it gets full I will take it to the bank and start over. A few extra dollars can mean a few extra cents in interest and padding for our emergency fund.
my dad and I used to roll his spare change together when I was a kid. It was so great because it's one of my memories of something that was "our" activity together.
Today it's kind of a pain, but it beats losing almost 10% of it to CoinStar. I've heard that some banks will roll or count it for you, but I can't seem to find one in my area. So not long ago I convinced my boyfriend to sit down and help me roll them. He ended up having fun, and was surprised at how much change I had collected that he's started his own change jar now too!
I am saying that is because it was during the later 70's that Atari (the granddaddy of todays PS3 and XBOX360) and they started marketing home computers - it is not technology that we grew up with.
I have been using the internet for over 10 years and still just know only basic stuff and have had to rely on my now 15 year old son to set up and program stuff on the computer and all the gizmos and gadgets we get.
I agree.. some of these are ridiculous! I am a professional tarot reader (no bashing please, it's a service industry, I enjoy my job and I'm paid well for what I do.. it's not for everyone).
Anyway, I have a solid client base. I am able to write off the supplies for my hands and fingernails. No, I do not have those wicked long false nails.. I have natural, normal length nails. I have to keep my hands looking nice for my job. I have to also buy anti-viral hand sanitizer to use between clients. They handle my cards. Some people come in with colds/flu and have no idea that they put myself and my family at risk by exposing me to germs. If I get sick, I cannot perform my job properly.
It was a great day when my tax preparer informed me of the write offs. It gets expensive. I was then able to gauge how much I was spending on supplies and modify DOWN accordingly. To me, if you get a break like that, you should really keep track and be thankful; rather than spending UP. Personally, I like to save money here and now.. not at the end of tax season (but I am not complaining about that either).
Thanks for sharing that. I know it can't have been easy. Reading other people's stories and seeing that there are people in the same boat as me is a help. I have exactly the same problem with letting go - days go by where I feel I'm moving forward and then it all crashes. I'm incredibly sick of it and want to be out the other side! Maybe we have to learn that we will never fully understand the actions of other people. I guess we don't always understand why we ourselves act/react a certain way. My confusion about my situation is one of the main reasons I think I'm having difficulty moving on. I'm just flummoxed as to how it all happened! I feel as if I could understand it/rationalise it/if I had answers, then I could move on. I don't know that that would necessarily be the case. Anyway I wish you the best of luck. xo

What you can do further with these spare change in your piggy bank is to have another bank account for it. Bank in all the money everytime your piggy bank fills up instead of spending it. When the money grows into a sizeable amount, use it to invest.

As a retail Mgr of 8 yrs, I've been asked numerous times as to why I have chosen a career which has such erratic hours, constant stress, demanding customers, and a salary that is marginal at best. The way I see it is: I did not choose retail, retail chose me. And while I don't love my job every day, the gratification that I get from running a successful store is something you don't get from a 9 to 5 cubicle job.To those considering a career in retail, you should ask yourself whether they meet the following qualities/character traits which every potential mgt candidate must posess:
1.You should be someone who enjoys keeping busy
2.You should enjoy helping people
3.You need to be thick-skinned
4."Type A" personalities usually make better managers
5.You should be willing to commit to be available upon request
6.You should agree to travel if necessary.
7.You should possess strong organization skills
8.You should be a good judge of character
9.You should be comfortable handling money
10.You should command,not demand,respect.
Anyone can be a good manager, Great managers lead.
People always hate to talk about when they are laid off. But as it has become every day's news headline since Yahoo started it with cutting 1500 of its task force last year, now a need of platform has been in demand where people can express their selves in words how they are feeling about their company, whey the got laid off was that justified or not.
And every thing they want to tell anonymously. And www.layoffgossip.com is providing you that platform.
My mom has just discovered the computer and the internet. This would be great to give to her to build some confidence, and also to help me impress my computer savvy husband. : > Thanks!
When I enter my debit card purchases into my checkbook register, I round up to the nearest dollar in my entries. It makes it a big easier to keep it balanced, and sometimes I retain 40 dollars a month or more...saved my butt on gas to get to work and a pizza for lunch for a couple of days more than a few times.
My hubby and I use a 5-gallon water jug to save all our spare change, and it makes a real difference. I've been laid off and the jar just yielded a month's mortgage ($1500). Two years ago, we dumped the jar to contribute to the down payment on a new house; five years before that, we dumped the jar to have the roof replaced on our old home. Saving in the jar is the best thing we ever did because you never feel it; you just break dollar bills and dump the change in the jar at the end of the day. After a while, you won't want to spend the change at all. Good luck and happy saving.
I need this book, badly....... My computer drives me crazy, and my children are tired of me asking them for help
i am going to win!
Looks like a great read, I hope to do so!

I would love a copy of this book--it is too perfect! Thanks for the give-away!

I'd love to get this book for my wife. I work in I/T and struggle explaining some things to her and this might be the perfect thing for her.

Love this concept for a book and could really use it! Pick me!

great thoughts, thanks for sharing your insights. IMO especially after the finance crisis a rebellion way of living is inspiring.
Sounds like a great book.
What a cool opportunity.

Looks like a good read, but I wonder how useful this would be from a design/designer perspective :)
