  • Breathe Easy: 10 Natural Air Fresheners   12 years 51 weeks ago

The article "6 Things in Your Kitchen That Get Rid of Bad Smells Naturally" stated:

"While it only works if you like the odor of java, unbrewed ground coffee can be used to eliminate smells, especially in things that used to belong to smokers, like cars or furniture."

So, just to clarify, unbrewed and brewed coffee grounds (as listed above #3) both work equally as well?

  • Carrying the Kenmore: How to Move a Fridge   12 years 51 weeks ago

For protecting the floors, especially hardwood we use a product called Fridge Feet, we own a moving company and usually leave them behind for the customer to use in the future. Never damaged a floor yer with them, price is pretty reasonable for them.

  • Remove Car Dents Quickly and Cheaply   12 years 51 weeks ago

I find it hilarious that pretty much most of the people saying this doesn't work, are all the 'professional' paintless dent removalists, shamelessly plugging their websites and businessess at the same time. Because they are furious that this is now all over youtube and the internet, because it DOES WORK. And for those who it hasn't worked for, you are either slightly mucking the procedure up a little, or need to do it more than once. Yes there are dents that it won't COMPLETELY fix, but it's pretty much the same story with the PDR's. Even in the video, the "professional" couldn't get all of it repaired, and was left with pretty much the same result you would get with the DIY option. Don't be afraid to try it, just make sure you follow the video's instructions more accurately, not like the English fella who quite obviously intentionally didn't want to get the desired effect as of course, towards the end of the video starts going on about his own business and getting a real pro to fix it..... /cue business web-site URL. LOL!

  • The 5 Best Food Dehydrators   12 years 51 weeks ago

If you're serious about using a dehydrator, you're probably pretty interested in good, quality food. If so, go with the stainless steel excalibur. It's the only one on the market that doesn't have plastic and/or non-stick trays.

Wth BPA, pthalates, parabens, and other crazy, dangerous chemicals in most plastics and non-stick coatings, you don't want your food sitting on hot chemicals drying out for hours and hours as they outgas into your food.

Stainless steel is the way to go.

  • Save Money and Water With These 6 Clever Landscaping Hacks   12 years 51 weeks ago

I do a lot of gardening--both ornamental plants and vegies / fruit. I save money by:
    1. making my own compost
    2. getting seeds and plants from friends and neighbors, and also sharing my seeds / plants with other gardeners
    3. I water in a focused way, instead of broadcasting water with a sprinkler. It's kind of my meditation time, saves water, and is a much more fun way to work out than going to the gym.

  • Suze Orman's Approved Card Gets Mixed Reviews and Controversy   12 years 51 weeks ago

I am a huge fan of Suze and recently got this card. (2013) I did it because the website claimed you could put money on it from you bank account. It isn't until after you sign up that you find out this is no longer an option. The other two options are western union or direct deposit. So I activated the card and went to western union. They had no record of my account. So now I am stuck with DD as my only option and I refuse to do that. So I call to cancel my account and if you call on the phone you have to pay to speak to someone. So I sent a letter asking them to cancel my account and send me written confirmation. When they got my letter they sent me an email that said there was "suspicious activity" on my account and that I would have to call them. UGH! I expected more. This is the worst product ever.

  • 14 Ways to Organize a Messy Closet   12 years 51 weeks ago

Add another shelf in the closet. A lot of closets come with a shelf but there is room above it for another shelf. A goldmine of wasted space. It makes it easier to place items on a second shelf than stack items on an existing shelf.

  • How to Get Back on Track When You're Behind on Your Bills   12 years 51 weeks ago

Really good advice. Debt can be paid off, but it's not an easy task, if you have a lot of bills that are outstanding.

  • The 5 Best Small Appliances for Students   12 years 51 weeks ago

Most of these I wholeheartedly agree with. But how many college students are going to spend $115 on an iron?? That's a whole textbook! Yeah, a steam iron is great & really indispensable, but there are plenty of good irons for $30.

  • How to Get Back on Track When You're Behind on Your Bills   12 years 51 weeks ago

Great advice. I got behind the 8 ball right after college when I was run over while riding my motorcycle. Nasty, painful mess.

The most important thing is make a payment every month, even if it's only one dollar. And notify your creditors that you're doing so and will repay the entire balance in full and when you expect to be done. They would much rather have the full amount, than heavily discount it by turning it over to a collection agency. As long as you keep paying, they'll be willing to work with you.

    Stop paying, and you're doomed.

  • Why Roth IRAs Are Ideal for Young Professionals   12 years 52 weeks ago

Any large brokerage firm. I use scottrade. Set it up online, have made 3 years of contributions and they give me tax forms electronically. Completely hassle free and just make deposits through ACH straight from my bank account. I've never had to meet someone in person, but if I did, I can just go to a scottrade branch.

    2 other advantages:
    1. you can invest in anything that the brokerage house offers (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc...) 401k is limited to very few investments in comparison.
    2. The money you put in is post tax, so when you withdraw after retirement it is TAX FREE. As opposed to 401k which is pre-tax today, and then you're taxed on withdraws in retirements.

  • Ask the Readers: How Often Do You Dine Out?   12 years 52 weeks ago

I usually eat out once or twice a month, and we try to make it something really worth it. Instead of spending money at restaurants we try to do something special at home, which means it is less expensive at that we can even feed more people. Also, sometimes we check on groupon.com to make the outings even more affordable.

  • How to Get Back on Track When You're Behind on Your Bills   12 years 52 weeks ago

    Tisha,

Solid post. It's something (most of us) struggle with at some point. While I maintain a very detailed budget, emergency expenses, gifts (wedding mostly, man they are expensive), and other expenses do pop up from time to time leaving some bills under the rug (CC, phone, etc). My first go-to move is to eliminate my leisure purchases immediately. Any clothing or luxury items that I would sometimes purchase, no longer even cross my mind. This helps me stick to the bare bones essentials. With these covered and my mind off luxury items I do not NEED, I can usually get back on track to my regular bill payments in a month or two. My advice to others is to mentally check out from purchases you don't need. If you can do this, you're one step closer to a sound budget.

  • 3 Reasons Not to Save for Your Child's College Fund   12 years 52 weeks ago

We won't be saving for our children, but not because we don't intend to help them. (And I mean help, not pay for it all, because we want them to work part-time and value the experience.)

We plan to pay off our mortgage now, which will allow us to finally properly save for retirement. Our incomes are not high, and we save only a small amount now. Our mortgage payment is what we should be saving for retirement.

With a small additional savings after funding the IRAs, we hope to save enough to return to real estate (we used to own rental property) when we are able to purchase a property in cash (maybe in 5-6 years). Obviously, it would have to be a cheap property! But we would either rent it or resell (this would require the RIGHT deal, but it can happen). With additional money from this adding to our cash flow, we plan to contribute to our kids' education.

We have 10 years before the first will go to college, so I think this is doable.

We won't have any savings to count against financial aid, but we will have set up our retirement (which we haven't been able to do, since we had our own student loans). But we will have cash flow.

Also, my life was hard as I worked throughout college. But my grades were outstanding. My education mattered--I paid for it!

Still, I don't want it to be so hard for my kids that they are harmed. So I plan to contribute at least a third, DEPENDENT ON THEIR GRADES.

If they party and get bad grades, the deal is OFF!

    Good luck everyone!
