Eggs! Perfect for any meal and a great cheap source of protein. My favorite breakfast is a poached egg on toast layered with slices of avocado.

Tortillas! Eggs and veggies wrapped in a tortilla, roasted veggies in a tortilla, beans and rice and hot sauce in a tortilla, anything leftover in the fridge wrapped up with some cheese in a tortilla! It can stretch little tid-bits of leftovers into a meal and I am less likely to waste food if I have some yummy flour tortillas in the house.

  • Mayonnaise: The Thrifty and Delicious Secret Ingredient Already in Your Fridge   13 years 7 weeks ago

I'm not a huge fan of mayo but it actually makes sense that it could be used as a secret ingredient for moist baked goods. Since I've gotten on a healthier-food kick I've been substituting plain greek yogurt for mayo in different things, and been using mashed avocado in things like tuna and chicken salad to give it more flavor. Just a thought!

  • 12 Ways to Stay Grounded Even When Super Busy   13 years 7 weeks ago

Getting outside is THE best way to stay grounded and aware that there's a world outside of technology and our jobs. We're all way too wrapped up in our work and online lives that its becoming rare to actually go out and interact with nature and with other people. Good list!

  • The Best and Worst Nuts, by Nutrition and Price   13 years 7 weeks ago

Great article. I too love nuts, but have always tried to eat them in moderation because of the fat content. That’s why I tend to stick to almonds, though I recently read an article on the health properties of walnuts, so have allowed myself some of those as well.

Years ago I heard that with cashew nuts, you’ll never find them in their shell, because between the shell and the nut is an oil I believe they said, that is toxic, which has to be removed before the nut is consumed. Though this seems somewhat hard to believe, it is true that I have never seen them in their shell. Just wondering if anyone here may know about that.

I’ve also heard that roasting them reduces the nutritional value, so I tend to eat only raw ones. Does anyone know if that is fact or fiction, as they really do taste nice when they are roasted?

Probably not this year, but eventually. Maybe late summer next year?

But it is not too early to start thinking about what you'll want to do differently, once you can earn a return on your cash again. Like my example—the total of all the minimum balances I need to keep to avoid fees on my banking have gone up. I need to think about whether that will still make sense, once rates go up. If I do that thinking now, I can have things already rearranged, when it starts to matter again.

  • You Shouldn’t Buy a Home If…   13 years 7 weeks ago

We have been renting for two years, the landlord wants to sell because they can't refinance the mortgage below our rent. They've offered to sell to us at a price that would make the mortgage lower than our current rent.

We like the place enough, 3b 2.5bath, and we have 6 people living here.

Trick is, we want to move in a year or two. So, we've been asking ourselves if we think we could rent it instead of trying to sell it.

What questions would you all suggest we ask ourselves to help us decide if this would be a wise decision. Our, should we walk away and rent. Oh, rent around here is generally $400+ more than what we've been paying. And the market is slim to none for houses that are even $15k more than the landlord's opening offer.

I don't understand, are interest rates going up?

  • 25 Ways to Lower Your Grocery Bill   13 years 7 weeks ago

I was going to write, "buy and eat less" is a good start, but it's just me and I don't have a family to cater for. I think a switch to tea, for instance, is a good way to curb any hunger pangs, and hitting the "Reduced To Clear" section in supermarkets is always a good bet. There's always a huge fight with obstinante people packed infront of them but, really, just barge your way in for the best deals!

I find soup, basic veg, wholemeal pitta bread, and cheap fish (such as sardines), and eggs are healthy and keep you full. It's also a good bet to get a loyalty card and earn those points for rewards.

A great article, thanks! Things like this always really interest me and I'm not sure why.

Thanks, Pamela - interesting comment. The "starter home" is an interesting concept. Why is it that we always feel we have to be moving on to something better?

Homemade chicken & dumplings. It's delicious, and the pepper adds a nice little kick to it.

  • You Shouldn’t Buy a Home If…   13 years 7 weeks ago

Great advice, except that things can change and we don't always know when or how they will. We bought a house we lived in for 29 years. It was a good neighborhood when we bought but went downhill to the point that it was dangerous. Plus the house was small, would have been big enough for my husband and I in our old age, but our kids came home and brought their kids. Then my husband had health problems that made him disabled and the house wasn't working for us at all. It was a 3 bedroom, 1 bath home and at one point we had 11 people living in it. The cost to remodel and expand was higher than we could get a loan for so we ended up selling and buying a new place in another town away from the crime. We do plan on staying here for the rest of our lives, but who knows. Fate sometimes intervenes and we can't be prepared for everything life throws at us.

  • Mayonnaise: The Thrifty and Delicious Secret Ingredient Already in Your Fridge   13 years 8 weeks ago

I prefer salad dressing - a lighter, more piquant flavor that also can be consumed straight out of the jar! It goes well with peanut butter, and I recently learned Kraft is marketing new flavored versions of Miracle Whip for use as a dip as well as a spread.

Similar to Meg's quicky aioli is the mayo based dip I make using vegan mayonnaise (surprisingly like the real deal), gyoza dipping sauce, and a couple of shakes of Sriracha.

  • 10 Unexpected Home Uses for Mayonnaise   13 years 8 weeks ago

When I was a unit secretary in the ER, when a burn victim came in... I was sent to the cafeteria to get a gallon jar of mayo. I do not mean the major trauma burn that ended up in a burn unit, but definitely more than sun burn level.

I also think that paying attention to your appearance (not fretting or obsessing over your clothes, make-up, etc. but taking care of yourself especially relating to nutrition and function) can help you get better results and grow stronger.

I have stocked up at Sports Authority also, particularly when I had coupons and was getting my husband and son ready for a multi-day backpacking trip -- got them some lightweight, fast drying, sun protective apparel and nice socks to help the trip go as well as possible.

That's another point: beware of those who have a vested interest in getting you to go to a more expensive school than you can afford. School guidance counselors may be in this category, if your school trades on its college acceptance record in its promotional materials.
