I'm considering getting rid of my cellphone, actually. They are generally more expensive, although I save money by using a TracFone, and that minimally. I do not need to be in touch with the world constantly. I pity those who feel the need to be plugged in at all times, although I understand its addictive pull. My land line might cost me $120/year, and my current cellphone usage is about the same. I understand that many people pay near that much per month for the cellphones. I guess if you have disposable income, that's your choice, not mine.
While newer cell phones may have E911, the real question is whether the municipality (PSAP= Public Safety Answering Point) has the technology to read the E911 data. Many PSAPs are working on outdated information.

We find cool places that you can walk for free and then go as a family. Around here there is a beach 5 min away that has boardwalks and a wetlands that has boardwalks plus picnic areas.
1. I use my landline on occasion for sending and receiving faxes. Yes...I know, old technology but for things like sending receipts to my cafeteria plan manager it is either fax or put them in snail mail.
2. I also keep the land line for my kids for the reasons already mentioned. I'm not going to buy cell phones for the 6 and 9 year olds any time soon.
3. If you are keeping your landline for emergency purposes make sure you have an old style corded phone stuck in a drawer someplace. All those cordless phones will go dead in a power outage. Doesn't matter if they still have battery charge, the transmitter units that send the signal to your cordless phones must be plugged into the wall to work. If your power goes out all cordless phones will go dead. Pick up an old corded phone at Wal-Mart for $5 and toss it in a drawer for emergencies.
Same for me. I live in a large metropolitan area and have good hearing, but talking on a cell phone is still like talking to Europe in the 1980s -- jumpy, scratchy, annoying. My cell phone is okay for information calls but for a long chat with my out-of-town family, there's no substitute (yet). Same problem with Skype, it ruins the natural flow for conversation because it doesn't allow any overlaps. Besides, my elderly parents don't have a computer.
I'm expecting my first baby in about 6 more weeks and I've not been working for the past 5 month. I really want to join a program so I can have a job working from home. Do you take online classes?
Went to use my Macys gift card last night which my husband bought me for Christmas. I was told I had a zero balance. The clerk had to scratch off the back for the 3 numbers. Obviously I had not used it. I called to check the balance and was told that on Jan 11th 2 purchases were made. Funny how the 2 purchases totaled exactly $100.00 down to the penny.
I'm not sure if there is anymore I can do? I have the reciept. My husband purchased 2 gift cards at Ralphs, the other one from Amazon worked. I guess I will never buy another Macy's gift card. Cash is King.
What happens when she gets back her phone? Do you think that with the "digital detox" the general behavior will change? Will she no longer be addicted to her digital life?
This issue is very concerning for future parents and I have yet to see a permanent and effective solution to the problem.
Well, I too received a "netspend" pre-paid card in the mail. I have had a credit freeze on my credit file for 2+ years, so I haven't applied or had the need to apply for credit since then. On the bottom of the paper with the card attached it stated that they received my name and address because I indicated an interest in receiving offers similar to this one. First off, I never give out my information to anyone unless it pertains to an existing account I already have open. I have already determined that it was not due to that. Another thing that is disturbing is the fact that they advertise that you can have your tax return deposited directly to the card. With the amount of people (especially in the south florida area) who have had their tax returns done without their consent - due to stolen SSN's, that automatically raises a red flag with me (before you go on saying that it is B.S., last year my aunt went to file her taxes only to find out someone from a hospital had stolen her SSN and filed a fraudulent tax return in her name).
Now, I have no problem with the concept of a pre-paid card as I know they have value to some people. Just don't send me one BECAUSE YOU THINK I WANT ONE. Also, I have never had a legit credit card company send me an ACTUAL credit card in the mail that I can go ahead and activate, so this tactic is shady at best.
Oh, and I called their customer service (866-930-9924 gets you direct to a live person) and would't you know it...a representative from india who was about as helpful as having a pet rock. Just another reason to not support a loser company like this.

Hmm. In the South we cook our chicken carcass as you describe in water on a low simmer, remove the meat from the carcass add it back to the water with rice and lots of pepper. We call it bog. Some people add smoked sausage. With or without sausage,the final dish is greater than the sum of its parts!
My hearing is not the greatest (its a clarity thing, not a volume thing). I've tried different cell phones and have still yet to find one as clear as a landline (I conduct a lot of business on the phone, and dont want to be huh'ing? all the time, so try to always take these calls on landline).
As soon as my cell phone clarity matches the landline, I'll ditch it. (any advice on what cell phone does that I'll take). But given how cheap landline service has become, I've never considered it that big an issue.
We finally gave up cable TV. I thought it was going to be really hard at first, and I do sometimes miss my favorite cable channels, but we've been making do with regular broadcast TV for a few months now and have lived to tell the tale. We don't go to movies often, and we prefer to wait for the drive-in season when we can see three movies for the price of one and bring our own snacks in the car. (Added benefit: our dogs get to come along too!) We don't go to concerts anymore. Got all that out of our systems in our younger years. We do enjoy sports, but we only go to a few baseball games a season, staying home to watch them on TV most nights.
Great points! I will add one more, learn from failures and mistakes, preferably other people mistakes :-). I find many times learning what not to do and saying “no” to the wrong decisions lead to great financial opportunities.
I am a HUGE fan of Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I avoid shopping for gifts during those times because of flu, colds, etc. Instead, on the 25th of every month, I purchase something(s) I will need for the holidays: red gift wrap or ribbon, stickers, disp. food containers, pens, tape, clear cello bags, etc. I then put them in my "Christmas" container and have most of the things already purchased by Thanksgiving.
Children at home necessitate a land line. I'm not buying my son a cell phone yet and the land line is his only access to emergency services should any emergency arise and we are not near or are the victims.
Just FYI, grooming may be a frill for shorthairs, but it's no such thing for longhairs.
I used to have shorthair "barn cats" but when I moved I adopted a couple of kittens (of uncertain paternity) from a co-worker. Well, the daddy must have been a Persian because these two have very long coats.
So long, in fact, that the manes have to be trimmed and a quarterly "sanitary clip" (which I call the "butt cut") must be done. If not, they can't groom themselves -- the mane gets in the way -- and pooping becomes problematic. They also get any mats removed, have the claws trimmed, and have a furminator treatment.
It's worth it to me to have this done right and not to have to try to do it myself, but it's got to be done with these cats one way or another. There's no "frill" about it.
Max- excellent article. I couldn't agree more. Why buy 20 -1L bottles of water because a coupon makes it cheaper than the 20L jug. Some may say because I am saving money for my child's college fund- but, that raises another question. These products and plastics that use water and petrol to create are damaging our environment, severely. Would you rather save a dollar or do your part to make sure your children live in a safe environment? I am all for saving when I can but not at a cost to the environment.
Start of every month, have an automatic facility to transfer 20% of salary to some mutual fund. This accumulates and makes it seem like lot of money!
