My favorite tip here is #1 - the preventive use of it against rodents. Excellent.

  • Seriously, Get Rid of Your Landline   13 years 20 weeks ago

I have a landline as part of a Comcast bundle. Every 6 months or so, I check in about the cost of my bundle and ask about eliminating the landline, and every time, I'm told I'm actually saving money by keeping it because of the deal it gets me. My landline won't work if there's a power outage, etc., but I use it often and like having it around.

  • 8 Legit Ways to Use the Gym for Free   13 years 20 weeks ago

Though I was aware that the Y's have guest passes, I just recently learned about free events that some gyms offer. Those are great ways of checking out the facility and classes before you sign up or ask for a membership as a gift.

  • 8 Legit Ways to Use the Gym for Free   13 years 20 weeks ago

Now that you and Glen mention it, I remember a small gym at an apartment complex where I once lived. There were some weights and treadmill, not much but nice to have close by.

Good tip to consider whether an apartment community has a gym before moving, as the facilities could save some money on a membership.

    Obnoxious!

  • 8 Legit Ways to Use the Gym for Free   13 years 20 weeks ago

My old apartment building had a small gym in the basement with a few treadmills, a few bikes, and some weights. My current building doesn't have a gym but does have a pool. It doesn't hurt to look for it when you are moving to a new apartment.

  • Seriously, Get Rid of Your Landline   13 years 20 weeks ago

I saw some of the other comments about the need for a land line during a storm or such, and it is a valid point. Yet, I feel like that's a once in s blue moon thing and if you have a cell phone, which most likely you do, then I feel almost 100% certain that while you're at home you're also receiving and making calls on it. That land line is just some extra money that you can save.

  • 8 Legit Ways to Use the Gym for Free   13 years 20 weeks ago

I had no idea some of these options even existed. Now I'm seriously considering asking someone to give me membership as a gift. At least that way it's not awkward.

I've recently read on here that some phone companies have a "warming line" (I think it's called) so even if you don't pay for their service, if you have a phone plugged into your wall you can still get 911 services.

I dropped my land line almost two years ago. It was a waste of money. The phone company charges way too much for it. My husband and I each have a cell phone. He pays $46 a month, and I pay less than $25. I could drop that to under $5 a month, but I choose to pay for unlimited texting.

If the power went out I have a solar powered/wind up radio that also has the capability to charge cell phones. If the cell tower went out it's not a big deal. We can survive alone in our home for months, and the hospital is only 15 minutes away.

  • What Helped You Become Financially Aware?   13 years 20 weeks ago

I became financially aware when I was 23. It was about a year after starting my first engineering job. I went to high school and college during the booming 90's when all investments made money and companies were actively competing to hire new engineering grads. So I had started the job, bought two cars and a house, and my wife had just started grad school. Then in 2002 came the first round a layoffs at my company. I looked our finances and calculated how long I could pay our bills if I lost my job. The answer was 3 weeks. THAT was a wake up call and was the push my wife and I needed to get serious about getting out of debt and saving money. I didn't get laid off and over the next 5 years cut spending to the bone to pay off our mountain of debt and build savings.

I started adding mint to salads last summer, and I love it. It's great in smoothies too.

Between the text in the article itself and the many mentions in the extensive comments, I think we've got the methanol thing covered pretty well.

I go to church! If you find a place of worship that you truly love, it's an awesome source of friendship and entertainment. My church is part of an association of churches, and we frequently host events for each other and cook banquet dinners. The food is wonderful, the friendship is fantastic, and the music is inspiring. Best move I ever made! And the price is flexible. ;)

Sarah, that's fabulous almost a year later I hope it's been a wonderful adventure. Just today I thought I could sell the house and the car and just travel around the world. Of course that little doubtful voice shouted "that's nuts, no one does that" then I read your post. How cool, good vibrations on your journey...

I'd be more in favour of giving people common sense advice that help them to become financially savvy. As a product, Prepaid Debit Cards are simply not a good idea!

  • 25 Things to Throw Out Today   13 years 20 weeks ago

Everybody says donate it, sell it, give it away, but try doing it. People say they want it but never show up, you leave on the curb and it sits there, you spend a day on hold on the phone trying to find a donation center. After many fruitless hours and days I still have the things I wanted to get rid of. I have come to the point of if I don't have it I won't have to dispose of it. But that doesn't reduce my current pile. When I die someone else will have the same problem, or not and they simply discard it.

  • Dealing with Nasty Debt Collectors   13 years 20 weeks ago

I have a problem with debt collectors calling me because my son lost his job, I have calls all the time and I even have them on the weekend, I pay my bills! I pay my phone bill, and I have a perfect credit score. I simply tell these people my son is 30 years old I do not have anything to do with his bills, and I tell them this is my phone I pay the phone bill, it is in my name and you calling me is bothering me. I am on the no call list and should not be bothered with these calls, some caller will say we will take your number out of our system, and then others want to become aggressive with me and we have it out on the phone, but after a few repeated calls I email the number to the attorney general and they stop calling

Thank you! My husband always buys too much, and in the summer I have a plant in my herb garden (which, gauging from its invasive tendencies, I'm convinced has visions of world domination) that produces more than I could ever hope to use. Until now. Great post.
