I will include this in my morning routine! BTW, King of shaves can be roughly duplicated by doing a 3:1 ratio of Castor oil and Olive oil ( you can add some drops of essential oil like peppermint ). Rarely do I nick myself!

  • 12 Proactive Things You Can Do Right Now   13 years 27 weeks ago

This Christmas break (I am a teacher) has been a chance for me to undo the damage from stress. I chose one day for the gym, one day for the house. Found it was easier to go to the gym! Shows what my 'hard' area is!

While this is not what you most likely had in mind for the 'Start Something Big'... It is HUGE for me. It does fit in the Simplify. I was to choose one area to de-clutter each day. Things need to be put away. If there is not a place for it to call home, decide whether it is a keeper or tosser. Paper is the hardest. Need to roll the file cabinet out... make new file folders and start getting rid of all the loose paper.

Decided I could include a stretch in the middle of it all to ease back the stress of dealing with it all... take a break and meditate outside... or listen to some calming music while doing all this fun processing!

If by chance anyone looks at my website... that is another HUGE project. I have been keeping tab on the biggest searches and will gradually take action on them. Much research needs to be done to bring about my final product. It will not be blog created for money, now. That is a whole other project that has not been finalized.

  • From Sweet Tea to Chai: Delicious Homemade Tea Recipes   13 years 27 weeks ago

Over the past year or so I started collecting loose teas from my local bulk food store. They taste so much better than the packaged Celestial Seasonings stuff, IMO. Thanks for sharing all this info - I never even considered a tea smoothie. Also, had no idea I could make my own Chai (which I looooove with a bit of cream and sugar).

Luckily, I can't limit this to just one moment. My wife and I (in our mid-sixties) decided 2012 was our year to buy and remodel a ranch house and move from our older, 3-story home . We found one needing extensive remodeling, then discovered that it had been pulled from the market - and reentered for sale at $40K less a few hours later. Sold! Then we found a huge, used kitchen cabinet set at the Habitat ReStore, thick marble tops and all, that would fit our newly-added 20' by 20' kitchen. Our framer estimated that this custom-built set cost $100K when new. Our cost? Only $2K! So 2012 was indeed a good year for us to make some major life changes.

  • 12 Natural Remedies for Stomach Pain   13 years 27 weeks ago

i have tried many home remedies and many otc remedies for heartburn/upset stomach and i have learned from experience that baking soda and Alka-Seltzer are NOT the same thing. for one thing, the ingredients are different. Alka-Seltzer includes potassium and citric acid. baking soda is simply sodium bicarbonate. for me, baking soda and water just doesn't cut it. i'm pretty sure i'm not alone in that. if you need some real relief from heartburn/upset stomach, i suggest finding a true remedy that helps. not just some old wives' tale recipe.

  • The Best Secured Credit Cards   13 years 27 weeks ago

ORCHARD does not follow the rules. After 1 1/2 years of paying on time and more than minimum, they said they would graduate to unsecured. They changed the rules and decided not to. And there isn't anything you can do about it except close the account and get your money back, which defeats the purpose of long time credit.

PUBLIC SAVINGS was the best secure card, but they went out of business and absorbed by Capitol Bank. There was low interest rate for paying on time (6%) and no annual fee. I had 2 cards from them at $200 limit each.

After Capitol took over, the increased interest rate to 25% and added a $50 annual fee! I ended up closing both accounts.

Watch out for Capitol one. Late on one payment and they will hound you, your family and friends to the ends of the earth!

  • Watching Tots: How to Get Started in Babysitting   13 years 27 weeks ago

Make business cards. I teach HS and so have my pick of any dozen or so girls to baby sit when I need it. The most enterprising girl I came across had beautiful business cards printed up. She was my student so I knew her but she gave me a stack of her cards and I probably passed them out to 20 different parents on her behalf. Word of mouth is great, but a pretty card in the purse or wallet is golden because who remembers that friend's recommendation a month later.

  • Cooking great meals with your car engine. The heat is on.   13 years 27 weeks ago

And be sure to hold your breath whenever you have to be anywhere near a running vehicle! All that noxious poisonous nastiness you speak of comes not only from your own engine, but all the cars around you, driving past your house, around the city, and, and, and... inhaling that kind of pollution is really bad for sensitive lung tissues!
    *sigh*
At least the food can be sealed up nice & tight for the road trip!

I think my biggest money moment in 2012 was making my final tuition payment for my daughter's undergrad. I'm done! I wrote the last check in July, so I haven't saved a huge sum yet, but I'm on my way!

  • Which is Cheaper: Flying or Driving?   13 years 27 weeks ago

That's pretty funny that you consider 12 hours to be a long drive, my family drives waay more than that once a year to wherever we choose to go on vacation haha. Drove from NH to Florida, to Colorado, to Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Mont Tremblant, Canada, etc xD

  • Ask the Readers: What Was Your Best Money Moment of 2012?   13 years 27 weeks ago

My best money moment is one that is still evolving. I started to explore the idea of freelance writing during the spring of 2012. I took an online class, explored many online resources regarding this new endeavor and learned that there are many options. There is also the need for a true commitment on my part. Yes, I am earning money, but know I could earn so much more with a deeper commitment. It is out there waiting for me. What happens next will be determined by the amount of self discipline I apply to make this money moment grow.

My best money moment of 2012 was finally realizing how much we could save if we simply shopped wisely and cooked at home rather than eating out so often. Not only did we have money left over at the end of the month after paying bills, but we even inadvertantly lost weight by enjoying home-cooked meals every night!

I've had a few great 'money moments' this year, but my best one was buying my new hybrid car - I put 50% down, got a crazy good interest rate due to my credit score (over 800, WOW was I excited to learn that), got a discount using the auto buying program, and was able to negotiate away some unfavorable loan terms. I felt very proud of myself and now I'm saving tons on gas as well!

  • Money Resolutions: 6 Ways to Take Control in 2013   13 years 27 weeks ago

One of the best tips I ever got was that it's better to be doing something (no matter how little) rather than nothing. Also if you want to buy something new, then allow yourself to buy it but you can only set aside 10% of all savings you make on forgoing over things.

E.g, want a jumper that is $100? Cancel your cable and once you've saved $1,000 from that you can get that new jumper. Works really well!
